Does /mu/ play an instrument? Discuss where you're at skill wise, what you're working on writing or learning currently, ask other anons for help, etc. Post audio clips of your playing (for critique of your playing, not full mixes for promotion). And finally post your gear but don't shit up the thread with brandwhoring and annoying shit.

I have a drumset, a bass guitar, and a guitar I found in the trash at different places. I have the cheapest midi keyboard, and am pretty much learning scales in C. I just use the transpose function like a capo. I'm ok, but I like my bass lines the best. I wish i could play jazz, or with people.

I play the drums and organ in a psych noise rock band. I'm not that great at drums but I like to think I get the job done. I've played piano for something like 13 years and do classical so I can fuck around on an organ. If you actually care to listen I can link SoundCloud for the album we released a few months ago.

I took up guitar last summer and try to play for an hour most days. I pretty much just practice simple chord progressions while watching videos. When I hit the year mark I plan on trying to learn basic lead work.

Synthesizers are what I'm really interested in, though, and I'd like to learn how to play keyboards eventually (rather than just playing around with a MIDI controller to come up with ideas). It's kind of a hassle to draw notes in with the mouse, but my setup isn't too good for learning while multitasking like I do with guitar. I'd probably sequence everything anyway, but it's definitely something I should learn in the long run.

I have a fender jaguar bass and a knock off strat guitar that I play through a fender bass amp. Started messing around at 15 but didn't follow through (although I noodled around a lot and had a lot of little melodies and compositions in my head). Trying to actually sit down and learn at 23. Starting with the major and minor scales, as well as the e harmonic minor scale on guitar. Learning time signature counting on bass and basic notes. The goal is to be able to compose an EP or album of original material that mixes prog and jazz fusion time signatures and tempo changes with my own melodies.

I've played guitar for 16 years. I started when I was young and barely practiced in middle school, and haven't been practicing enough in the last year. I'm lead guitar in a prog rock/metal band (we never got around to fixing a genre) but we haven't gigged since September and I'm pretty rusty. I've been studying music at a state school (sounds shitty, but half of our professors also teach at Berklee and our Sound Recording program is actually well regarded as one of the best) so my theory knowlege has improved dramatically, and I learned how to read music. Lately I've been working on Bach's Chaconne in D minor for classical guitar as a personal project. I also play bass, basic keyboard and the ocarina, though I'm not as good at those.

I've already got a decent collection of vintage digital rack synths:

>Yamaha TX802

>Yamaha FB-01

>Casio FZ-10M

>Roland JV-1080

I also have a Matrix-1000 for analog polyphonic stuff, but it's out of tune unless I adjust the notes it's playing slightly. I'm not crazy about the workflow of sound creation with it (or even its sounds themselves necessarily), either. On top of that, I've got a Twisted Electrons AY3, but I only plan on using that in niche cases.

I plan on getting the Behringer Model D to cover monophonic analog duty when I get some extra money. Maybe when their OB-Xa knockoff comes out I'll replace my Matrix-1000, too.

Overall, I think the FB-01 is my favorite out of what I own, and I only paid $60 for it. It instantly gives you that gritty late '80s-early '90s video game FM sound.

As far as actually playing anything, I'm trying to move on from sequencing everything to playing things myself (I even recently bought a budget MPC controller for drums), but I'm going to need a lot more practice for anything but chords.

No thanks for the bump man, the jaguar is a MIM blacktop 90, it plays very well. I like it because it has a hardtail, a short scale length, and P90s. It was a gift from my mother for my 18th birthday so I'm a little biased, but it's one of my favorites, behind the Gibson and my MIJ Tele. I really recommend trying a blacktop if you see one, they aren't terribly expensive used (out of production now)

I do in the sense that I've never really used my MIDI controller as anything but a composition tool. I can play some chords, but that's about it so far.

I recently decided that I'm going to try to begin playing every day, though, so hopefully I can start improving. I think I might just continue focusing on chord progressions right now until I have no problems playing them smoothly.

>Since you're midi post a link to something you played if you can

I got started just by creating rhythms into the step sequencer and then by going into the piano roll and learning what combinations of notes go together to create major and minor chords based on the empty spaces in between. A three-note chord with two empty spaces in between the top and middle and three spaces between the middle and bottom comes out as a major chord, for example. I'd suggest just getting a MIDI controller if you don't have one and learning that way.

Orange amps are considered pretty good from what I understand, at least certain models.

No I started by playing guitar. It’s just easier to write when you have various different things to write with. Sure I can do plenty of things on guitar, but I don’t have much interest with writing solo guitar instrumental shit. I like writing piano, and getting ideas from synths. Also I have discipline problems so sitting through and writing out shit with just my acoustic is annoying. It’s much faster to transcribe something to midi and write another part afterwards, I’ll do that with no intention of refining it or memorizing it on guitar. Then I’ll write other parts and transcribe to midi. But if you’re not a strong instrumentalist and mainly write with the computer definitely focus your time into an instrument of your choosing, I would say piano but it’s your preference. You’ll be much better for it.

That's especially true for analogs. Back when digital synths started taking everything over, you could get them for ridiculously low prices. Now even a Juno-60 is over $1,000.

Learning how to make MIDI music is probably the best choice if you care more about writing music than actually playing it.

I'm most interested in using guitar for simple instrumental pieces and arpeggios and background textures. I was trying to learn stuff like power chords recently but put that on the back burner for now since those really don't have a place in the music I currently make. It's not like it's rock or anything.

There are also programs out there that allow you to use your guitar as a MIDI controller, but I haven't tried one at this point.

Learning keyboards is less of a priority for me in that I can just sequence everything and get largely the same sound in the end, but it's still something I'm trying to learn. There are little dynamic subtleties in music that I'd rather get from playing music than fiddling around with it on a piano roll.

I mostly play acoustic so I couldn’t use it to get midi data from it probably, though I’ve seen the hardware that’s for it. Well I personally don’t play many power chords, but if you’re looking to add texture and arpeggios, you should just learn to fingerpick for now. Flat-picking is a whole nother thing and it takes lots of times to develop. I just prefer to pick cause I hate the empty feeling of using my fingers. Not quite as satisfying as the pick cutting throughs strings. And you should definitely learn basic triads for now, and definitely over power chords if you’re not making rock or metal or indie bedroom shit. And I’d say don’t be afraid to delve into “harder” shapes. I mean it takes a while but they stop being so hard. What kind of music are you intending to make with guitar?

And I love playing guitar, usually do for hours a day if I’m not writing, but it’s a pain in the ass to write or play what I’ve written and remember it on guitar, or sit down and totally get it down. I just like making music for the sake of music, won’t be performing unless I want to write songs, and I like a wide variety of music not just guitar music. So writing with MIDI is definitely very very helpful and it helps to have my instrument for reference if I want to write some parts or am on an idea. It will also inform your style as you get better. But I’m sure you have your writing style that will translate to guitar already.

As far as chords go, I know a fairly decent amount of the basic (G, E, E minor, C, C7, A, D, and maybe a variation of an F and a few others).

I might learn fingerpicking eventually, but I started off using a pick and have found a style of pick that I like using.

>What kind of music are you intending to make with guitar?

Lo-fi, heavily processed instrumental stuff. I was working on synthwave-style tracks a while ago (among others) but have decided to focus on making stuff that's slower and more atmospheric than a lot of that is.

Here are a few rough samples of the type of guitar work I'd use for something like that:

https://vocaroo.com/i/s1Lifo4x5iiw

https://vocaroo.com/i/s1Wzr0b42cyt

https://vocaroo.com/i/s1giTldYRMTB

Well, maybe not that last one. I was thinking of Timecop1983 when I made that and would only use it if I made it more distinct.

You probably get the picture, though.

I only seriously took up guitar last summer and have found it to be pretty rewarding but am largely in the same boat. I practice daily but don't plan on joining a band or anything. I might also take up other instruments eventually when I get to a certain level of proficiency.

This is a shitty track I made when starting to use the DAW so didn’t have much of a clue what I was doing and is mixed like shit. Recorded guitar with mic from laptop. Leave a comment and we can talk out of this thread if you want.

You sound like you have definite goals and a respect for the undertaking, so I’m sure you’ll get to a good level sooner or later. Though a satisfiable proficiency is a high bar depending on the person. You should definitely learn more chords outside of first position though. Idk what kind of ambience you’re looking for or what exactly “lo-fi” would encompass with guitar as a texture, or how much theory you know. But you should definitely start on basic extended chords and suspended chords sooner than later, I know you didn’t ask but just putting it out there. And everybody moves differently. I did listen to your reversed bit and major to minor arpeggio thing, and they could fit in a million contexts so the Lofi umbrella is very vague to me. The third bit is a sound I like and reminds me of a lot of things, and I play similar things as well. Reminds me of post hardcore type shit and VGM shit like this https://youtu.be/Vu3RGFkfVgI

Considering the circumstances I don't think it sounds bad, but I'm not that qualified to comment as far as mix-related stuff goes. I like the tinkly electric piano-sounding thing in the background and the reversed guitar part. The track has a nice sunny feeling to it that makes me think of Lemon Jelly.

>You sound like you have definite goals and a respect for the undertaking, so I’m sure you’ll get to a good level sooner or later. Though a satisfiable proficiency is a high bar depending on the person. You should definitely learn more chords outside of first position though.

I can easily come up with chord progressions I like on a keyboard, but I have a harder time with guitar and knowing what I should learn. I do a lot of chord progressions with notes held between chords, so I think suspended chords are something that should be a high priority for learning on guitar.

>Idk what kind of ambience you’re looking for or what exactly “lo-fi” would encompass with guitar as a texture, or how much theory you know.

I'd like to do music along these lines:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OK-5uN2nHX0

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prMXL3MclAs

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbyp6gE8aMg

These tracks are a lot like the ones I like to come up with in terms of mood and chord progressions (though better than mine, of course), and the first one is especially similar in that I plan on taking the warbly cassette tape route.

As far as how guitar fits into that, The Campfire Headphase is an album that has an aesthetic like what I'd like to go for. I prefer more of an '80s-style guitar sound and more arpeggios, though.

>Reminds me of post hardcore type shit and VGM shit like this https://youtu.be/Vu3RGFkfVgI

Wow. I don't think I've ever heard that piece before, but that bittersweet mood is exactly the kind of thing I'm after. There's a sense of melancholy to it that hits you right in the feels, but it's not cartoonishly dark or anything.

You should just learn maj and min 9s, add9s and sus2s in general, I can post a voocaroo of what these chords sound like later as well. Em-Am-Bm is i-iv-v

There's nothing wrong with simple rhythms like that, but you kind of have to spice them up a bit with fills and additional rhythms here and there (like the claps you'd hear in styles like Italo disco). You'd think people so into music based around drum machines and samplers would at least gain some proficiency at them.

>>102512

As far as keyboards go, you can start by just learning simple triads by positioning three fingers like a trident and skipping the keys in between. Pic related.

From there you can move on to variations or start including more fingers. After you've been putting chords together for a while, you'll start to find progressions you'll like.

I'm not a very good keyboardist and know little music theory other than what I've picked up from listening to music and imitating what I like, but basic keyboard knowledge has helped me a ton as far as composition goes.

A keyboardist and pianist are two separate things, but for the sake of convenience I'll treat them like they're the same. Basically, like violinists, it's a problem of supply. There are a LOT of pianists, so you've got to be really good and keep yourself participating otherwise they will go to the very long line of other pianists gunning for that spot. But musically, they are not expendable at all. They are very unique in that the entire orchestra (minus percussion) can be played at once in an arangement. You simply can't do that with other instruments.

Keyboardists are more expendable than pianists, the difference being that a pianist has more technically (technique) and musically challenging parts and plays on a traditional piano, while keyboardists play less musically challenging pieces with more sound engineering/technical (technology) jobs. Pianists often have a central or semi-central role in a piece, whereas the keyboardist is almost always just for support. I've been both, but being a pianist is WAY more fun. Keyboardists just sit in the back playing simplistic chords, with all the time and effort going into finding the right pads and leads and soundscapes to go with a composition. Also keyboard is 100% contemporary, pianists have a much much wider range. Besides, this is all for ensembles. Solo pianists are a thing. Solo keyboardists (usually) are not. TL;DR Keyboard is the backing sound, piano is more versatile, and both can be replaced because of the large supply of both.

The hardest piece I've attempted, which I have tabled for the time being, is Chopin's Op. 25 no. 11 (winter wind). Its hard as FUCK. I recommend valentina lisitsa's version on youtube, her technique is actually god-tier. Currently I'm finishing up learning Liszt's Liebestraum No. 3. Tiffany Poon has a great recording. Honestly, I'm a great pianist from an outsider perspective, but I'm fucking dogshit in reality. I have no right to be as bad as I am after 10 years. I sounds like a pretty impressive 5 year student, which is really impressive to someone who doesn't play, but I ought to be as least two or three times my current skill level, but I'm a bad student who practices very irregularly and spent much of his early lessons winging it from lesson to lesson without preparation. I'm a freshman in college now, and I intend on getting much more serious. The dumbest thing about piano for me has been how immature I've been with lessons.

The dumbest thing to do when trying to learn piano is to go for a very long time without an instructor. Your ear will carry you a ways at first, but after 6 months to a year of regular practice, unless you're autodidactic as fuck, you will actually hurt yourself. I self taught alongside a shitty teacher for a few years and spent the next 4-6 years undoing bad habits.

Thanks for the questions, sorry for the late and lengthy response. Any music suggestions? I might be able to record and upload it.
