Do drum machines allow for heavy syncopation like you would find in a Ronald Shannon Jackson or Atheist song? It looks kind of hard, if not impossible to do it because drum machines were made for repetitive loops but I think it would sound very interesting.

You know there's software, right? If you can write it with midi, you can program a drum track. The only thing you probably couldn't program would be improvisation or something that doesn't fit a tempo.

Actually you can with midi, if you don't loop it and just go putting on the grid ignoring the end of bars and such, or using a program that can do multiple tempos, and you adjust to your needs. There's always a tempo to anything random, it's just changing.

The vast majority of drum machines have a swing function, some of them you can add swing to individual elements.
