When i was in high school i loved the 90s

Then i grew up and i realized they were shit, only they were less shit than now, and that literally the same can be said of every decade from the 60s onwards

The only 90s aesthetic that I remember is over produced music videos with ugly early CG effects and garish over saturated digital color grading. Commercialized thrash metal, like Metallicas Black Album, was very indicative of the first half of the 90's. The kind of high concept NWOBHM metal that Maiden played was considered uncool and out of step along with hair metal by 1992.

"Alternative" can encompass a bunch of shit, and of those "Alternative" bands that played with metal bands, like AiC and Soundgarden, were considered "metal" prior to the grunge marketing craze in 1991. Generic college rock alternative post-grunge bands were seldom playing with real metal bands.
