Has Catalog 3 ever leaked? The album was released 33 years ago, I find it hard to believe that in all that time nobody has ever released so much as a single song from the album.

Did it even exist at all? Is it just a massive troll from Michael and Marcus? I don't see why they'd openly talk about the existence of an album they never intended to re-release.

>Has Catalog 3 ever leaked? The album was released 33 years ago, I find it hard to believe that in all that time nobody has ever released so much as a single song from the album.

No, it was a really limited release only available to friends and family and such. They've mentioned being surprised nobody's leaked some of their older material yet if I remember right. It might be selfish of me considering that they're seemingly unsatisfied with their earliest work, but I wish all their old stuff would just leak already.

Some of their greatest material is found among the tracks of the Old Tunes compilations and the Random 35 Tracks Tape, if you ask me.

>Did it even exist at all? Is it just a massive troll from Michael and Marcus? I don't see why they'd openly talk about the existence of an album they never intended to re-release.

I think they probably existed, but I don't necessarily believe the artwork for their really old stuff is original. They didn't use the name Boards of Canada until 1994, yet Catalog 3 dates back to 1989. I'm guessing the images were just made up later on (there were CD repressings for some of the rare early releases in 1997, but they could also have been made just to have something to put up on the Internet).

Considering that A06 from the Random 35 Tracks Tape might be "5D" off Closes Vol. 1, we may have already heard some of the unreleased material on the leaked compilation tapes.

Catalog 3 was BoC's first album, they released it back in 1987 when they were still teenagers. While clips and songs from their other early albums have leaked, absolutely nothing from Catalog 3 exists.

>>102892

Honestly, of the few clips that exist of their pre-1995 work, most of them don't sound good. The only thing that really sounds nice is Wouldn't You Like to be Free? from Play By Numbers.

They played an entire track from Hooper Bay live once, I'll post that in a second.

Here's the song I was talking about. It's the only full song from that era.

It was never confirmed to be Noatak, but it's the same length, has a similar vibe as Circle and has a robotic voice vaguely saying "Noatak", it's almost certainly from Hooper Bay.

It seems like most people are most interested in their guitar-based tracks from that period, but I don't really like any of it from what I've heard. "Duffy" has always been the one that interested me. It has that ineffable, mysterious feeling of bittersweet nostalgia and naive melodic sensibilities that make the group so appealing to me. Although a lot darker in tone and more purely atmospheric, "Circle" shows that they were able to make unsettling music even before their careers took off.

Overall, though, I think Closes Vol. 1 is probably what I'd enjoy the most judging from the little we know. There are also a few apocryphal tracks that give us a taste of what it sounded like provided they're actually real (and not just much more well-done fakes than most of the others floating around). Video related.

>>102900

I wonder how much influence christ. could have had on the sound of Hooper Bay. The cold tones of this ATP recording and "Circle" both seem to bear a resemblance to his style. Twoism also does, and that's the last release from them he had any known part in.

I like it, but my problem with the album stems from how cleanly produced it is. It doesn't have that hazy sound old analogue audio does.

That's one of my problems too. In an interview I think one of the brothers mentioned that they ended up having some of their old equipment dying on them and buying even older, more worn-out equipment. You'd never know that from the sound. I get that they were trying to get it to sound like a more professional horror movie score from the early '80s, but it seems like their autistic attention to detail actually held them back on that release.

As much as I was let down, I will say that I consider "Nothing is Real" one of the all-time great tracks from them. It wouldn't surprise me if that was the holdover track from their old days they mentioned in an interview (although "New Seeds" bears a bit of a resemblance to A14 from the Random 35 Tracks Tape).

They even did an acoustic version of Music Has the Right to Children but said it sounded lame. I'd still love to listen to it. I understand where they're coming from in that they don't think their unreleased material is up to their standards. That's pretty respectable considering how many people release music that is completely forgettable or downright bad. I just hope some day they end up releasing recordings of their unreleased or unfinished work (even if their surviving family members have to do it when they're dead). They could call them "studio archive volumes" or something along those lines to separate them from their work that was actually meant for the public to hear.

There was speculation from some Twoism user that the brothers dislike how heavily sequenced their early work was, but who knows if that's what their objection to the old stuff is? Maybe a lot of it just sucked, with the best stuff already being leaked. A lot of musicians are embarrassed about the music they made when they were just starting out.

They definitely took a while to grow on me, but I always end up coming back to them. There's an eeriness to their stuff that's both otherworldly and familiar. I seldom hear anything that comes close to them in terms of the emotional depth and psychological complexity of their music. Sometimes I even find it hard to listen to.

It kills me to know there are probably 20+ hours of BoC material we'll never hear because the brothers are autistically secretive and never want to release anything outside their group of friends.

We have four entire albums obtained solely through leaks, and they tons more. What kind of fucked up insanity is that?

Some of my favorite BoC songs are on Old Tunes like Buckie High and Nine-Rubber Wisdom.

I'm frustrated that there's a decent chance BoC's early work will only be released after they're dead, probably by their kids. That'll be what, 30+ years from now? I've read stuff from friends of the duo on WATMW and it sounds like they have it but would never want to release it.

One guy was stuck for money and offered one of his tapes for $1000. but it was one of the already leaked Old Tunes tapes. When he was grilled for it his response was something like "it's not like I'm selling something that isn't already public", which I feel implies quite a lot. Mainly that the two brothers would be upset should any of those early works get ripped and uploaded online.
