I think Nu-Metal had some great musical ideas, and the super over the top and theatrical edginess of the genre is still potent today, but so much of the actual songwriting of nu-metal was just terrible, and strangled by pop sensibilities of the time. No memorable riffs, terrible production, awkwardly integrated hip-hop, questionable vocalists, bad lefty lyrics, etc. There's still potential to be mined from its base elements.
