I only have two:

>"Every song needs to have lyrics as good as the instrumental. If one of them is worse than the other, the song is automatically a dud."

and

>"If every song sounds the same over a long period of time, it negates any good it had in the first place. You get sick of it like eating nothing but apples for the next few months."

In that case what is your 5 cents on music without lyrics at all?

Satisfying hooks is the main thing. Nice timbres and atmosphere for ambient pieces and music along those lines.

>If one of them is worse than the other,

There's always the instrumental version, albeit it's not always available.

>If every song sounds the same over a long period of time

What do you mean "every song"? Are you talking about multiple songs, like an album? Anyways, personally speaking, I don't mind repetition. If you've ever heard a song without repetition, you would realize it sounds jarring. I listen to trance and house, and they are very repetitive. But those two genres have a lot variation that build on top of the repeated parts. Pop songs are shitty repetition, they have about a half minute of music then repeat it with some breaks in between. It's like a painting with many hues of blue vs a painting with one quadrant copy pasted on the rest.

The singer isn't talking about themselves

>Good lyrics and good instrumental, expresses a concept well and sticks to that concept throughout the song

The likes of Rammstein are very listenable but cucked as fuck in the lyrics, and not even wholly great in the instrumental, but even though Olavi Mikkonen of Amon Amarth said he heard Rammstein in a lot of his songs written for Versus The World, they're still miles better simply for having a coherent idea behind them.

>Does something unique, or at least better than similar bands

This one, obviously, is limited by what I've listened to, but it's very relevant to how much I like a song. I can't engage with music if the song isn't doing something interesting and new. Bands like Gloryhammer don't do anything unique, strictly speaking, but what they do, they do so much better than everyone else that they stand out anyway.

One standard is that it has to have layers of complexity and be continuously evolving. That's not to say repetitive and/or simple songs will be garbage, just that songs should progress in a way that helps develop an album rather than stand alone as 'that good song off the album'. It's hard to explain.

It needs to evolve in both rhythm and lyrics - And no fucking lowering the tempo as the climax

Simple, something I can listen to and relax while researching. A song or album that has a sense of aestheticism to it.

How so?

imo songs about personal experiences and the such tend to add some authenticism and emotion songs otherwise tend to lack
