A thread is re-loaded every time, it's cached "once" and then overwritten with changes. Posts not appearing, server stuttering and so on is all an effect of large image files.
Not to mention that I can not make you experience how bad it is. I myself assumed it wasn't too much, but being capped at 1 Mbps made me realize how bad it actually is.
You're also greatly overestimating both the effort it takes and the required pace. In fact, with the proper software writing a post takes longer than compressing an entire folder of hundreds of images. (cmd -all jpg 70%)
In any case, a good way to start is compressing the image you're about to upload. Especially when you're uploading OC, which are the main offenders in my experience (especially because those can be greatly cut down with negligible quality loss).

You can't see the quality difference between a lossy .jpeg and lossless .png, if the .jpeg is encoded properly.
The server seems to pre-fetch the images before generating the thumbnails every single time. No idea why, as this is grossly inefficient. Image thumbnails of larger images will also take longer to interpolate. Merely opening and loading images is still an issue though and in some cases, with larger files, freeze the browser as it is waiting on the server to finish its response. (Client issue, but see below.)
Furthermore, it's good practice in general. If the majority of users on 8ch would properly encode or re-encode their files, we wouldn't have had server issues (improper architecture and poor system administration not withstanding).
Externalizing the issue does not resolve it. We can also blame artists for not properly encoding their files as well, but that won't make them magically fix it.
In any case, I'm not holding a gun to your head and saying you need to compress your files. Merely asking to consider it and giving an explanation on how to do it.

Refresh and reload are not the same thing. On a refresh the client "reconnects to the server to re-establish connection with the address and reload all the resources. A reload reloads the page, or some resources, and "checks" for new ones to add. In both cases the browser should load resources from temporary files on the machine, but that is after loading the page the first time.
It's there for the people that interested; these things are complicated and often can't be explained quaintly. It's upsetting you feel I'm writing "walls of text", merely trying to be sincere and informative.
I compress everything by hand and only use ffmpeg once in a blue moon. A quick google revealed the following though:
