I gotta say I was impressed by the backgrounds and the animation in general. the music was also very inmersive. kind of I want to see more of the same director. and surprise, he directed Ghost in the Shell.

I'm doing okay I guess, since you asked I forgot to answer. Well I was remembering some embarrassing texts I sent last year.

Exactly, there isn't all that much to take out of it on a first view. Just immerse yourself, I hope you found a good quality source. I basically didn't understand anything except catch some of the symbolism, like SPOILER the last image of the and stuff, you know that they were on something like… etc. The military theme, the sexual themes, evolution, the Biblical stuff, but not much more. I just like the stills and atmosphere.
Then I read some interpretations. Read about what messages could have been contained and some other things that escaped me like the fish and the fishermen chasing it. I read on the director and some ideas why he made it.
I didn't know he was the same guy who did the Ghost in the Shell movie. I've seen it too. It's very good, especially the visual again, but the story is much more standard, less cryptic.

ye, shortly after I saw the movie I read a bit about the director during the time of producing the OVA and also some theories about what could mean each aspect. the movie by itself is easy to follow, the detail is that we don't know what meaning is behind each item in the movie making everything on screen kind of a mindfuckfest.

By the way, all the machinery and mechanical design reminded me a lot and I mean a whole lot of 70s-80s communist era sci-fi techno fiction, because I remember finding a collection of old home country magazines from that time at my grandparents' house that were basically about that era's fascination with space, technology, exploration both with articles about fictional stuff and real life research. The art and imagery often used was very similar. Plus the covers of sci-fi books from that time often were in that style.
It's hard to explain what I'm referring to. A slight bit can be felt from this part of Nu Pogodi, but in a diluted, almost Tom and Jerry form.

It's just an era that has mostly passed, sadly, with a few exceptions here and there. The Japanese weren't the only ones at that time. If you need weird and artsy animations, the Russians produced a whole lot of obscure stuff, the French too, but you kinda expect it from those guys, it's like they are unable to make something ordinary.
It's just that it's actually really hard to digest sometimes. It can be so out there.

As far as French comics go I loved Pif et Hercule as a kid, and that one comic inside of it that was about a blonde fellow in an Ice Age, but with Dinosaurs. Very similar to that really good animation Fire and Ice:

I've also heard about some really good french comic that really old but it's some sci-fi thing about someone that was a cyborg like one of the earliest cyborgs in fiction or something.
I have to admit, the Japanese just make their artsy stuff look cooler. Slower and with cool factor characters, rather than the sporadic and culture based Rus/French ones.
