‘Small’ high-altitude balloon of unknown origin flying over Western US, poses ‘no threat’ to national security: officials(NYPost.com)

The US government is tracking a high-altitude balloon of unknown origin — and officials insist that it is not a security threat.

The balloon, flying at an altitude between 43,000 and 45,000 feet, was determined to be “not maneuverable” and poses no threat to national security, the North American Aerospace Defense Command told The Post on Friday.

The nation’s airspace watchdog described it as “small” and said its fighter jets intercepted the balloon over Utah.

“NORAD will continue to track and monitor the balloon,” the military agency said in a statement. “The FAA also determined the balloon posed no hazard to flight safety.”

The purpose of the balloon is unclear.

Its presence over the US mainland comes just over a year after US Air Force F-22 fighter jets shot down a Chinese spy balloon off the South Carolina coast after it had traversed the continental US over the course of several days.

The craft made multiple passes over key US military installations before it was shot down.

President Biden described the Chinese balloon’s payload as “two boxcars full of spy equipment” and faced intense criticism from Republicans, who argued that it should’ve been brought down sooner.

Biden, 81, was also criticized for essentially absolving Chinese President Xi Jinping of responsibility for the incident.

The president claimed during a June 2023 fundraiser that Xi “didn’t know” the balloon was heading for the US.

“That wasn’t supposed to be going where it was. It was blown off course,” Biden said.

The Pentagon determined that the balloon did not transmit data back to China as it floated over the US, and said steps were taken to “mitigate the potential collection efforts.”

The incident led to Secretary of State Antony Blinken scrapping a planned visit to Beijing the week after the Feb. 4 shootdown. He eventually made the trip months later to smooth over relations.

Several other unidentified objects were shot down over the US and Canada in the weeks following the downing of the Chinese balloon.

Debris from those objects were never recovered, and Biden said they were not believed to be linked to China.

Unfortunately, the stomach bug — of which there are multiple varieties — is reportedly the leading cause of acute gastroenteritis — or gastrointestinal issues — in the US, resulting in 19 to 21 million cases every year, according to the CDC.

Cases generally spike around February and March when people are most likely to be holed up indoors and, therefore, are in close proximity to one another.

Sufferers commonly contract the virus by ingesting contaminated foods and liquids, touching tainted surfaces and interacting with people infected with the virus.

According to the CDC, people who get it from other people generally do so by caring for them, sharing food or eating utensils with them, or eating food handled by them.

Once infected, the patient can experience a host of alarming symptoms ranging from violent diarrhea to stomach pain and vomiting, which can cause significant fluid loss and eventual dehydration.

These complications begin within 12 to 48 hours after exposure and can persist for three days.

A norovirus is particularly insidious because of how easily it spreads from person to person.

It only takes a few particles to make someone sick while the infectees often remain contagious for weeks after their symptoms improve.

Children are especially likely to facilitate the spread of the contagion, which has ravaged several schools and day-care centers in the Northeast.

Earlier this month, Irving Primary School in Middlesex County, NJ, shuttered due to an outbreak of the stomach bug.

It has since reopened after undergoing a deep cleaning, ABC News reported.

Fortunately, people can mitigate the spread of the norovirus by rinsing fruits and vegetables and thoroughly cooking shellfish and, of course, washing one’s hands, per the CDC.

Unfortunately, unlike the coronavirus and some other bugs, the norovirus has a resistance to hand sanitizer.

“Purel and the alcohol-based stuff doesn’t get through the envelope of the virus, and it’s still contagious on your hands,” declared Sacchetti.

“Soap and water is the only thing that’ll really protect you from this.”

Meanwhile, those infected with the virus are advised to stay home and avoid preparing food for others while sick and for two days afterward.

They should also drink plenty of liquids to replace fluid lost from vomiting and diarrhea.

That will help stave dehydration — the ailment’s most potentially serious symptom.

At least 52 people have been transported to hospital after a hazmat incident in southeast Pennsylvania

At least 52 people were rushed to local hospitals Friday afternoon after a hazmat incident sickened dozens of people at a medical packaging company in southeast Pennsylvania.

Lt. Pete Nickischer, from the Upper Macungie Township Police Department in Lehigh County, said authorities received reports of a chemical smell in the building and some employees experiencing nausea, vomiting, and headaches.

According to Nickischer, Fire, EMS and police crews were called to the scene at Sharp Corporation, a pharmaceutical packing company, on Keebler Way around noon.

Lehigh Valley Health Network received about 30 patients at two of its hospitals, according to spokesperson Brian Downs. He told The Post that some patients presented with minor symptoms such as headaches and were still being monitored and undergoing tests.

“They weren’t all with symptoms,” he said.

“Some were complaining they had headaches or hoarse voice.”

St. Luke’s University Health Network spokesperson Sam Kennedy said 22 people were taken to its Allentown hospital. All are stable and will be discharged, he told local media.

The building where the incident occurred has since been cleared by authorities who are now allowing people to re-enter.

Nickischer told WFMZ the cause had not yet been determined.

Migrants desperate to get into the US from Mexico often pay human smuggler “coyotes” thousands of dollars to help sneak across the border in high-risk operations with no guarantees of safety or success.

But for travelers from a growing number of countries, gaining legal entry into Canada is simple, which has made The Great White North — with a much larger US border and less officers patrolling it — a more attractive option for illegally entering the US.

“It’s really easy for Mexican citizens to come into Canada as visitors, and then they have the opportunity to cross illegally into the United States,” Canadian immigration consultant Fernando Torres told The Post.

“It’s very easy. People from Mexico and Chile can come to Canada without a visa requirement,” said Torres, who emphasized his clients — refugees from countries including Mexico, Venezuela and Cuba — remain in Canada, and he doesn’t condone border jumpers.

The lenient visa requirements offered to Mexican and Chilean nationals through Canada’s electronic travel authorization (eTA) program were granted to 13 more countries last year including Morocco, Uruguay, Panama and Thailand.

Under the program, travelers from these countries who have held a Canadian visa anytime in the last 10 years are eligible to visit Canada and stay for up to six months with no visa required.

Getting permission to enter Canada by air through the eTA program “takes about five minutes to process and [costs] seven dollars,” Torres said.

However, the Canadian government comes down hard on anyone who overstays their welcome or breaks the strict terms of their visa, unlike in the US, according to Torres.

“In the United States, even though you are out of status, you can still get a license and get an education for you and your kids,” he claimed.

“If you decide to overstay in Canada, you are immediately removed from the system,” Torres said, which effectively renders the lollygagger a persona non grata in the country.

“You can’t drive, you can’t pay rent, you can’t get an education, you can’t get healthcare. Nobody can hire you in a serious company, so what is the point of that?”

As for why more migrants don’t just fly to the US and claim asylum, Torres says “it’s not that easy”.

In order to be granted refugee status in the US, a migrant must meet what is known as the nexus requirement — having a demonstrable fear of persecution in their home country specifically based on their race, religion, nationality, social group or political opinion.

“Not everyone has that justification,” he says, adding that getting a tourst visa for the US is also not so easy for many in South and Central American countries.

“The only opportunity a lot of people have to get to the United States is by walking because if they don’t have a visa, the airline company won’t allow them on the plane,” Torres said.

“Which is why so many people decide to go to Mexico and cross the border or now go to Canada and cross.”

Torres also said Canada’s unfamiliar frigid climate plays a role in migrants making their way south to the US.

“Even though Canada has more immigration opportunities to legalize their situation, Latin people don’t want to stay in Canada because of the weather,” he said.

Illegal crossings at the US’ southern border reached 2.3 million in 2023, capping off the year with a record 276,000 migrant encounters in December alone, according to Customs and Border Protection data.

A comparatively small 12,200 migrants illegally entered the US from the north last year, but that figure represents a 240% spike from 2022.

The Federal Trade Commission said Friday it filed a complaint accusing H&R Block of deceptively marketing its online tax-filing software as free when that is not true for many consumers.

The FTC also alleged the company deleted consumers’ tax data and required them to contact customer service when downgrading to more affordable products.

The FTC said H&R Block’s TV ads and promotions indicated consumers could file their tax returns for free while including language — sometimes in fine print — that the free offer only applied to simple returns.

The ads did not explain what a simple return was, and the company has changed the definition of the term “multiple times in recent years,” the commission said, saying H&R Block was aware of consumers’ frustration and confusion with the ads.

“H&R Block designed its online products to present an obstacle course of tedious challenges to consumers, pressuring them into overpaying for its products,” said Samuel Levine, director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection.

The FTC is not seeking any civil penalties.

“They lied to me,” she told The Post Friday.

Fred Jimenez, a 10-year-veteran of the Northside Independent School District in San Antonio, was corralling special needs students in a gymnasium on February 7 when the incident took place.

His wife of 25 years, Margo Jimenez, said school officials told her he had fallen while trying to shepherd a student in the proper direction.

But an internal report obtained by The Post gives a different version of events.

Margo Jimenez said her husband Fred died after being pushed by a student.

Jimenez, 73, suffered a severe head injury and massive brain bleeding, his tearful wife said.

“They knew what happened from the beginning but they were trying to cover their butts,” she said. “They told me my husband fell. He was pushed. He was pushed by a student who was over 6 feet tall. A big kid.”

In their initial public statements, school and district officials made no mention of a push, only stating that Jimenez sustained an injury while trying to “redirect” the student during an “interaction.”

San Antonio police are probing the case, which has now been categorized as a homicide by the Bexar County Medical Examiner.

“Mr. Fred was a beloved colleague and friend to many of us,” the Northside Teachers Union said in a statement. “Moreover, what happened to him — the very situation that cost him his life — is a worry that nags at educators in Northside ISD and across this state daily.”

Jimenez was a popular figure at the school for a decade.

Doctors removed portions of Jimenez’s skull in an attempt to relieve pressure on his brain, but the damage was too extensive and he passed away last week.

His shattered spouse — who lost her only son in a car accident last year — mourned the sudden passing of her “soulmate.”

“He was such a good man,” she said. “Even when he was sick, he would insist on going to school. He would tell me that no one else knew what buses they all had to get on, and he had to be there for them to make sure they got home. He loved those kids.”

Jimenez, she said, was her only source of solace after the loss of her son. “We would cry together, and I would feel better,” she said. “Now, it’s just an empty house. I don’t know what I’m going to do.”

Northside school officials declined to comment on her statements.

Trump took to Truth Social Friday to call on the state’s lawmakers to preserve access to IVF days after The Alabama Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos can be considered children under state law.

“Like the OVERWHELMING MAJORITY of Americans, including the VAST MAJORITY of Republicans, Conservatives, Christians, and Pro-Life Americans, I strongly support the availability of IVF for couples who are trying to have a precious baby,” Trump railed online.

The all-Republican Alabama Supreme court found that an 1872 state law allowing parents to sue over the death of a minor child “applies to all unborn children, regardless of their location.”

Critics blasted the potential impact on fertility treatments and the freezing of embryos — which had previously been considered property by the courts.

Since the ruling, two of Alabama’s IVF providers have suspended portions of its care to patients.

Alabama Fertility Services said in a statement Thursday that it has “made the impossibly difficult decision to hold new IVF treatments due to the legal risk to our clinic and our embryologists.”

On Wednesday, the University of Alabama at Birmingham health system said it was pausing IVF treatments so it could evaluate whether its patients or doctors could face criminal charges or punitive damages.

The House Judiciary Committee is calling CBS on the carpet over the firing of veteran reporter Catherine Herridge, who was probing the Hunter Biden laptop scandal, and the subsequent seizure of her personal records, The Post has learned.

In a scathing letter sent to CBS News President Ingrid Ciprian-Matthews on Friday — obtained exclusively by The Post — Rep. Jim Jordan, who chairs the committee, demanded the network reveal who at CBS or parent-company Paramount Global “made the decision to terminate” Herridge.

“The unprecedented actions of CBS News threaten to chill good journalism and ultimately weaken our nation’s commitment to a free press,” the letter stated.

Herridge — who is the middle of a First Amendment case being closely watched by journalists nationwide — was among just 20 CBS News staffers let go as part of a larger purge of 800 employees at parent company Paramount Global.

A source with knowledge told The Post on Thursday that the network boxed up all Herridge’s personal belongings except for her notes and files and informed her that it would decide what — if anything — would be returned to her.

Jordan (R-Ohio) also requested a list of individuals who went through Herridge’s files, as well as any documents and communications relating to her documents.

The committee also seeks information on any individual from Paramount Global, CBS or CBS News accessed the confidential materials, “reviewed any of her confidential materials, copied or retained any of her confidential materials, or conducted any forensic examination of her confidential materials.”

The committee gave Ciprian-Matthews a March 1 deadline “no later than 5 pm” to send in the information.

Herridge did not return requests for comment.

A CBS News spokesperson again refuted the characterization that the network confiscated Herridge’s private records.

“CBS News strongly denies any items were seized,” the rep said.

On Thursday, the CBS spokesperson insisted the network “respected [Herridge’s] request to not go through the files, and out of our concern for confidential sources, the office she occupied has remained secure since her departure.”

“We are prepared to pack up the rest of her files immediately on her behalf – with her representative present as she requested,” the network added.

The House probe comes amid uproar from employees who were first shocked the network would oust the journalist and equally stunned it retained her confidential files after she was let go.

“It’s so extraordinary,” a source familiar with the situation said, noting that the files — which are presumptively now the property of CBS News — most likely contain confidential material from Herridge’s stints at both Fox and CBS.

Herridge had encountered roadblocks from higher-ups over her Hunter Biden coverage and had also clashed with Ciprian Matthews, a sharp-elbowed executive who was investigated — and cleared — in 2021 over favoritism and discriminatory hiring and management practices, as The Post previously reported.

“They never seize documents [when you’re let go],” a second source close to the network said. “They want to see what damaging documents she has.”

Sources feared CBS’s actions could have an impact on Herridge’s First Amendment case because her documents may contain privileged conversations she had with her lawyers or the identities of sources.

Herridge is under fire for not complying with US District Judge Christopher Cooper’s order to reveal how she learned about a federal probe into a Chinese American scientist who operated a graduate program in Virginia.

The journalist may soon be held in contempt of court for not divulging her source for an investigative piece she penned in 2017 when she worked for Fox News.

As a result, Herridge could be ordered to personally pay fines that could total as much as $5,000 a day.

Insiders said that there are concerns that CBS could be subpoenaed to reveal her source’s identity, which would threaten free-press principles.

SAG-AFTRA, the union that represents CBS staffers, condemned the network for seizing Herridge’s notes and research from her office late Thursday.

“This action is deeply concerning to the union because it sets a dangerous precedent for all media professionals and threatens the very foundation of the First Amendment,” the union said in a statement to The Post.

The union added it has been in touch with CBS News and is hopeful the matter “will be resolved shortly.”

The Tesla worker reportedly told the black business owner — beloved by other Silicon Valley heavyweights — that the company wanted the pies delivered the following week for an event to commemorate Black History Month.

“She said, ‘Oh, I’m so sorry that vendor hadn’t paid you yet, I think they’re kind of new’,” Rasetarinera said.

“‘And I have a question for you, can we double the order?'”

Rasetarinera agreed, though her staff had to work around the clock to complete the job.

The bakery owner said that to accommodate Tesla, she had to cancel other orders as well as buy more ingredients.

After taking on the heavier workload, Rasetarinera then said she received a text message from the Tesla rep, which read: “It unfortunately sounds like we will be changing plans and will not be needing this order. Thank you so much for your support I appreciate it.”

Rasetarinera said that her business suffered a loss in excess of $16,000 as a result of the last-minute cancellation.

When she inquired with Tesla about the cancellation, she was told the decision came from upper management.

Staffers at Facebook and Instagram parent Meta said that they flagged hundreds of so-called “parent-managed minor accounts” that were using the subscription feature on those platforms to sell exclusive content that included photos of young girls in bikinis and leotards to mostly men, according to the Wall Street Journal.

To make matters worse, Meta’s algorithm-run recommendation systems were reportedly promoting child-modeling accounts to adults who posted pedophilic comments.

When Meta staffers tried to get the company to ban these accounts or at least force them to register with content moderators so that they could be monitored, their bosses declined — instead choosing to rely on a less-reliable automated system that allowed pedophiles to evade guardrails, sources told Journal.

The report comes as Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who personally apologized to parents who confronted him about their children being exploited through his platforms last month, is seeking to avoid personal liability in two dozen lawsuits accusing his company of getting kids hooked on his social media sites.

Last year, Meta introduced a paid-subscription service to entice influencers to produce more content on their flagship social media platforms.

Subscribers to these accounts who agreed to pay $19.99 a month were offered perks such as “in-person events” as well as “early access or releases,” according to The Journal report.

The Journal found several instances in which banned accounts engaged in child exploitation were resurfacing — generating as many as hundreds of thousands of followers.

One Facebook page with more than 200,000 followers featured pinup-style photos of children.

The Meta staffers realized that the parents were well aware of highly explicit comments from adults toward their children — even going so far as to engage in sexual banter about their kids with subscribers.

The company’s policy required that adults be the only ones eligible to sell content or solicit donations, though it did create a carve-out for kids to have their names on an account so long as it was co-managed by an adult.

This led to the creation of child-model accounts which attracted the interest of strange men — prompting one Canadian activist, Sarah Adams, to warn of Instagram pages that included photos of prepubescent girls in bikinis that were being purchased by pedophiles.

“We launched creator monetization tools with a robust set of safety measures and multiple checks on both creators and their content,” Meta spokesperson Andy Stone told The Journal.

He said Meta’s efforts to bar pedophiles from viewing child-model accounts “part of our ongoing safety work.”

The Post has sought comment from Meta.

A Jerusalem rabbi accused of enslaving 30 women in a cult-like home dubbed the “house of horrors” has pleaded guilty to lesser charges in return for a lax sentence of community service and cash compensation to his victims, according to reports.

Aharon Ramati had been charged with enslavement, minor assault and obstruction of justice among other charges, but reached a plea agreement for “holding people in conditions akin to slavery,” according to YNetNews.

The deal came with a cushy sentence of just nine months of community service and $34,000 in damages owed to his victims — and was reached after 11 of the women declined to testify against Ramati because they were too traumatized to face him.

The case grabbed headlines in Israel after Ramati’s 2020 arrest, with police labeling the rabbi a “cult leader” who used violence, intimidation and tales of eternal damnation to indoctrinate and control his victims.

“They had to ask him for permission for everything and consult him over every simple action,” police told the Times of Israel after his arrest.

Ramati began gathering women around him in 2008 by presenting himself as an enlightened religious leader who knew the “true path” to salvation, YNet reported.

He invited the women to live in his home, which he’d renamed the “Be’er Miriam Seminary,” where they lived on moldering mattresses spread throughout three bedrooms, had no hot water and faced constant leaks and decrepit conditions.

Ramati moved to a neighboring home as the ranks of his followers grew. At some points, more than 30 women were living within the cramped confines of the house, with some reports saying as many as 50 women along with children lived there, according to prosecutors.

The rabbi charged the women about $220 per month for a bed in the house, or about $170 per month to share a mattress with another resident, according to YNet.

While at the house, the women attended daily lessons where Ramati plied them with his teachings — which included renouncing all personal desires to focus their energies toward spirituality.

Ramati filled the void of personal responsibility for them, prosecutors argued, making all decisions for them and in turn taking large portions of their pay from jobs they worked outside of classes.

To control the women, prosecutors said Ramati frightened them by telling them they would face horrific harm at the hands of other-worldly forces if they disobeyed him, isolated them from their families and turned the women against one another to police each other.

One common punishment in the house was forcing the women to burn their fingers in fire to “simulate hell,” the Times of Israel reported, or making them eat hot peppers.

Rumors about Ramati’s conduct have surrounded him for years.

He was first arrested in 2015 but was released after several members of his group testified on his behalf.

WASHINGTON — Then-Vice President Joe Biden allegedly told Russian billionaire Yelena Baturina and her husband, ex-Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov, to “be good to my boy” during a 2014 speaker phone conversation, according to a former Hunter Biden business associate who was interviewed Friday in the House impeachment inquiry.

Jason Galanis, a federal inmate who defrauded an American Indian tribe, said from his Alabama prison that on May 4, 2014, the sitting vice president called into a party in southern Brooklyn featuring his son, business partner Devon Archer and the Russian power couple.

“I was present when Hunter Biden called his father on a cell phone and put the call on speaker. Present for the call were Yelena Baturina, an investor in Rosemont projects, her husband Yuri Luzhkov, the former mayor of Moscow, and Devon Archer,” Galanis told congressional staff in testimony obtained by The Post.

“During the May 4th party, we were told to go to an area of the restaurant to gather because Hunter was going to call his father. Hunter called his father, said hello and ‘hold on, Pops,’ then put the call on speakerphone and said, ‘I am here with our friends I told you were coming to town, and we wanted to say hello.’

“The vice president said ‘hello’ and some pleasantries of ‘Hope you had safe travels,’ and then seemed like he wanted to bring the call to an end by saying, ‘OK then, you be good to my boy.’

“Hunter responded by saying, ‘Everything is good, and we are moving ahead.’ The vice president said something about ‘being helpful,’ and Hunter ended the call by saying that he was going to call his father later.”

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Galanis’ prison interview in Montgomery, Alabama — in which he also laid out new claims about Joe Biden’s alleged role in Chinese and Ukrainian business relationships.

The Post was able to find some corroboration of the convicted fraudster’s account.

The Post has not been able to confirm with other witnesses the precise quotes attributed to Joe Biden at the Brooklyn party or confirm that he called.

Baturina, who was spared yet again Friday in a more than 500-name Russia sanctions list from the Biden administration, allegedly attended two dinners with then-Vice President Biden at Washington’s Cafe Milano restaurant.

Baturina was present for a 2014 dinner alongside Hunter’s Kazakhstani partners and the vice president, Archer told Congress in July testimony.

The precise date of that alleged gathering is unclear.

An eyewitness told The Post that Baturina and her husband, who has since died, also attended an April 16, 2015, dinner at Cafe Milano, which also included a Kazakhstani group and Burisma board advisor Vadym Pozharskyi of the Ukrainian energy company, who wrote a thank-you email to Hunter the next day for the opportunity to meet his father.

For reasons that remain unclear, Baturina transferred $3.5 million in February 2014 to a firm controlled by Hunter and his associate Devon Archer.

Archer told Congress in July that he wasn’t sure of the reason for the transfer, but bank records show that more than $2.75 million of it was transferred to another corporate entity, which Archer said that he and Hunter Biden jointly owned.

Archer testified that Baturina separately invested nearly $120 million with his company Rosemont Realty, with which Hunter Biden also was briefly associated.

Galanis told House investigators that “I recall being stunned by this call — to actually hear the vice president of the United States speaking on the phone. It was clear to me this was a pre-arranged call with his father meant to impress the Russian investors that Hunter had access to his father and all the power and prestige of his position.”

“Before this call, Hunter sat next to Yelena Baturina at a table at this party, and I heard them speaking on business matters generally,” he recalled.

“A few days after this May 4th party, an email my lawyer provided to this committee shows that Devon had confirmed Ms. Baturina was committed to a ‘hard order’ of $10-20 million in a Burnham investment banking client,” he said, referring to a company led by Archer and Hunter Biden.

Galanis said, “The vice president said ‘hello’ and some pleasantries of ‘Hope you had safe travels,’ and then seemed like he wanted to bring the call to an end by saying, ‘OK then, you be good to my boy.'” Getty Images

Hunter, now 54, was vice chairman of the Burnham Financial Group, according to trial testimony and abandoned laptop emails.

Court documents indicate the firm controlled Burnham Securities, which was the placement agent for the $60 million bond sale ripoff that defrauded a South Dakota tribe and landed Galanis, 53, with a 14-year prison sentence.

Hunter Biden was not charged in the case, but Archer was indicted in 2016 by the Obama-Biden Justice Department, convicted in 2018 and sentenced to one year in prison.

“Hunter and Devon will change your access forever,” Galanis wrote in October 2014 to associate Michelle Morton, who pleaded guilty to federal charges in the case in 2018, according to evidence produced in court proceedings.

New allegations about China, Ukraine

Galanis additionally presented new allegations to investigators about the Biden family’s relationships in China and Ukraine.

Burnham, the financial group led by Archer and Hunter Biden, “reached an agreement with a Ukrainian oligarch — [Burisma owner] Mykola Zlochevsky — for a $120 million investment into a new Burnham

entity,” Galanis said.

“The financial arrangement documented by the US and Ukrainian lawyers laid out a 25% profit participation for the Burnham partners. The Burnham partners were not required to put up 25% of the capital. Instead, Burnham was putting up relationship capital of the Biden name in foreign markets like Kazakhstan and Mexico and elsewhere where oil concessions were sought from the government.”

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Galanis’ prison interview in which he also laid out new claims about Joe Biden’s alleged role in Chinese and Ukrainian business relationships. REUTERS

Galanis also indicated that Joe Biden as vice president may have been more involved than known in his son’s role with an investment fund called BHR Partners, the first of two major Chinese-state-linked ventures involving the family.

Business executive Henry Zhao “was interested in this partnership because of the game-changing value add of the Biden family, including Joe Biden, who was to be a member of the Burnham-Harvest team

post-vice presidency, providing political access in the United States and around the world,” Galanis said.

“I recall being with Hunter Biden and Devon Archer at the Peninsula Bar in New York, where Hunter took a call from his father. He told his father things were going well with Henry and Harvest and that he might need a little help getting it across the finish line.”

“Hunter did not put the call on speaker as we were at this bar, but I am certain that Hunter was discussing our business efforts on the Burnham-Harvest partnership and that the Vice President was aware of these efforts.”

Archer previously told Congress in July that then-VP Biden had coffee during a 2013 trip to Beijing with Jonathan Li, the incoming CEO of BHR Partners.

Joe Biden subsequently greeted Li over speakerphone, Archer said, and wrote college recommendation letters for his children.

Another Biden family business partner, Rob Walker testified on Jan. 26 that an initial tranche of $3 million in funds from another Chinese business, CEFC China Energy, flowed to him in March 2017 — with about a third going to the Bidens — shortly after Joe Biden met CEFC Chairman Ye Jianming at DC’s Four Seasons hotel.

Walker said the money was a “thank you” for past services in a relationship that began in 2015 while Joe Biden was still vice president.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visiting several Singapore attractions on Monday night

SINGAPORE - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is spending his second night in Singapore on a mini tour that includes some of the Republic's best-known sights such as Gardens by the Bay and the Marina Bay Sands (MBS) integrated resorts.

At around 9.10pm on Monday (June 11), his motorcade was seen leaving the St Regis Hotel in the Tanglin area where his delegation is being housed at, before driving past the Raffles City area towards Marina Bay.

Mr Kim, who arrived in Singapore on Sunday ahead of his historic summit with United States President Donald Trump in Sentosa on Tuesday, stopped by Gardens by the Bay first and is expected to also visit the MBS SkyPark or the nearby Merlion Park.

At around 8pm, the observation deck of the 57th-storey sky park at the MBS, which offers panoramic views of Marina Bay and the central business district, was closed off to the public, ahead of its usual 10pm timing.

MBS staff were seen polishing fingerprints off the glass panels of the observation deck. The Straits Times also saw a heavy security presence comprising MBS personnel and police officers.

Mr Kim, who is North Korea's Chairman of the State Affairs Commission, may also visit other sights such as the Esplanade performing arts centre.

The mini-city tour will cap a rather quiet public schedule for Mr Kim on Monday, compared to his officials and Mr Trump.

Apart from a meeting with Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the Istana on Sunday evening, Mr Kim has not been seen stepping out of the St Regis hotel in Orchard Road where he and his delegation are being housed at.

In contrast, Mr Kim's officials were seen earlier on Monday meeting with Singapore and American officials - making courtesy calls or engaging in last-minute talks over the one-day summit.

Mr Trump met PM Lee and also members of the American community in Singapore.
