I think the backstory was that there was a war and those guys took over Earth and Mars. Little Lady is basically the face of the movement for Martian independence and dad sold her daughter to the earth guys to save his own skin. Not a terrible story. I like the MCs being war orphans turned child soldiers.

And it wasn't just QUALITY shots because wonky inbetweens are expected, and help with making the overall animation smoother, but they barely animated the Barbatos and even the Graze it fought. And don't get me started on how the hell does the Graze's camera produce light. It's a camera, not a flashlight.
Also the story is predictable and overdone as fuck. Blonde McLonghair looks to be a fusion of Relena and Marina with some different use as a plot too, as little plot as there is after 1 episode, despite them spending most of the episode spoonfeeding viewers info that didn't need to be explained right away, or at all.

Another point in the episode like this is when one guy said they, the soldiers, were treated as expendable by the higher ups. Of course they should have known that implicitly, and even the viewer should have been able to tell that from how the higher ups acted, but they just had to spoonfeed it.
Also the whole scene abour that reactor in space and explaining what that was and that babby's first philosophy lesson of "humans won't let go of power no matter how destructive it is" was forced as fuck. The only reason that scene happened was to give our Char and Garma expies screen time in the first episode.
Plus you had all the generic melodrama surrounding Autismo Maximo and Miss Princess Bighair and how stupid that scene was. If this is how it's gonna be for 50 episodes then it may end up worse than SEED Destiny.

Oh yeah, what bothered me about that specially was that they didn't even need to say it because at that point it had already been implicitly established by how one of them got beat up because he stopped planting the mines for a few seconds and how they were eating in a separate area from the rest of the guys in the mess hall. This entire first episode was basically the first part of that game where you're stuck piloting the LEV, with it ending right on uncovering Jehuty. Lots of plot dump, world building, and character introductions. Whether or not they were actually good is another story, but that's what the focus was. And the next episode seems to focus on the actual brawl that's about to ensue.

300 years in the past, which is fucking stupid.
This mobile suit, which apparently outclasses every other mobile suit of the current era, is 300 years old, and was only being used as a generator for a base up to this point.
That's like if we fast forwarded to 2150 and someone was using a steam train as a generator for some stupid reason. Or go to 2245 and someone has a Panzer tank that's just lying around and it somehow is better than every weapon up to that point.
The Turn A got away with this kind of shit because the Turn A itself was the reason technology regressed hard and thus made it the most advanced MS well beyond the time it was made.
Either the Barbatos is going to be some stupid ass deus ex machina or they're just going to do nothing with it, which is equally stupid.

I think they were trying to go for the good old "super prototype" business. It feels like in Wing where the Tallgeese is super powerful and it is also the first mobile suit that became the basis for all the ones to follow. The difference that makes this one more retarded of course is that in Wing the time period between Tallgeese and the rest is not that long while here this is, for all we know, a random mobile suit of the past that is over hundred years old.

Nah, I believe they did. They are rehashing themes from older Gundam series and characters as well. It does feel a bit SEED-ish in that regard. "look guys, a Zaku and a Dom, and our Gundam looks a lot like the RX-78!"

Well I meant the entire concept wasn't meant to be a Gundam series. Sunrise probably had a draft they had for a non-Gundam mecha series and then they turned it into a Gundam series, probably because Bandai or Sotsu told them to, since Gundam = model kit sales.
In the process of turning it into a Gundam series they added more rehashing themes but they probably weren't ever there in the original draft for the series, which is why they seem so tacked on.

They all stay the same one-dimensional characters throughout the entire show. The only character with some personality was the char clone, but even he's super generic since nothing he does really stand out as a char.

Akihiro's brother doesn't really help the plot go anywhere. Biscuit's death was completely obvious to anyone but the biggest idiot. The death is a shitty plot device for characters to say "would biscuit have wanted this" in order to move on. The forshadowed mikazuki/orga fight ended up never happening.
Let's also not forget the fact this was hyped up to be the "darkest, most violent and hardcore series ever". We got child and woman soldiers that don't fucking die because that would be too sad and the harem-waifus cannot ever die because waifubux.
I can't wait to rant about season 2. I already hate it since they replaced the fucking ryusei-go with a shitbox gm.

Eh, Kudelia was one of the few to actually GET character development.
Now, it was going from "I w-wanna help the children…" to "I AM going to help the children!" so it wasn't much, but she did steel her resolve to actually BE the force of change everyone was wishing she'd be.
Mika's characterization isn't so much one-dimensional as it is simple:
He is someone who had to retard and suppress his emotive capabilities to not only survive, but excel at a life as a Child Solider/Manlet Murder Machine.
Like Rambo himself, deep down he fears he'll never be able to be anything BUT a solider, however, because he's already sacrificed some of his basic humanity in order to hone his killing instincts, he doesn't even know how to deal with this emotions.
This is why he so readily looks to others for moral guidance; If he truly is nothing more than an instrument of murder, he at least wants to be one that is of use to someone responsible enough to direct him accordingly.
You can discern this from the people besides Orga that he holds in high regard:
Sakura Pretzel - Biscuit's Grandma and farm owner, Granny Sakura was probably one of the first people Mika met that showed him a way of life that wasn't either starving in the streets or being used as cannon fodder.
This is a woman who knows our nominal protagonist well enough that she can instantly snap him out of his berserking blood-lust with a simple tap to the head.
Kudelia Aina Bernstein and Atra Mixta - While Atra had been friends with Mika since the day they met and thus rather dear to him, it wasn't until Kudelia came along to kick start the series that he started to appreciate both girls' self-determination.
Self-determination is basically an alien concept to Mika, whose life up until then had always been dictated by the actions of others, so the idea that he could actually make his own decisions is profound.
The same can be said for "Kudelia Sugoi," Kudelia's ability to diplomatize and negotiate is astounding to Mika because he doesn't know how to deal with opposition outside of maiming and/or killing.
Mika being an emotional retard also contrast well with Choco-char; While Mika just doesn't know what to do with emotions other than murderous rage, McGillis is a literal sociopath who throws lifelong friends straight into the meat grinder with a smile on his face all in order to achieve his ambitions.

I mean, the Brewers' Man Rodis were built for space pirating after all, so it's not like they'd need to go for long walks on any surface.
While you probably wouldn't like the Tekkadan Landman Rodi (http://gundam.wikia.com/wiki/Landman_Rodi) for still having some of the same toe thing going on, the first seasons' Spinner Rodi (http://gundam.wikia.com/wiki/UGY-R38_Spinner_Rodi) used by the Dort Workers and the second seasons' Dawn Horizon pirate Garm Rodi (http://gundam.wikia.com/wiki/Garm_Rodi) are both flat foots.

Well the Barbatos TECHNICALLY did use bits recovered from enemy mobile suits for all but the first and fourth forms, but for the second and sixth it was just shoulder armor (Graze and Graze Ritter respectively), while third and fifth space type strapped on pieces of Gali/Ein's Schwalbe Graze (Wire Claw and Hip Boosters respectively).

Nah, secret brother number one actually works pretty well if you ask me.
First, Akihiro's opening up about having a missing brother kinda caps what little character development he got; Going from easily expendable Human Debris to having value in himself as an actual Human BEING.
Second, it helps establish just how crappy things can get in this setting; You can go from having a happy family as members of a merchant fleet to having your parents slaughtered before you and your little brother are split up and sold like livestock.
Third, it is the first time Orga is confronted with a choice that will decide whether Tekkadan will be any different than the merc groups that have come before, who gladly sacrifice others for their own gain.

Uhhh, maybe it's because I'm mostly watching the Toonami dub for the first season, but I haven't ever gotten the feeling they are destined to come to blows…
Sure, Orga is terrified of what Mika might do if he ever decided to buck his leash, but I think the worst that would actually happen is a falling out between the two over ideological differences, probably Mika going Pacifist via Kudelia while Orga walks the path of Tony Montana.

Well I've heard that at least some of that was due to the Director, who didn't want to end the season on a sad note and generally opposed the writer's darker story.
Season Two outright says in its intro that, while Kudelia has made Mars a slightly better place and Tekkadan is doing quite well, the fact that child soldiers kicked the ass of Earths' Elite Peace-keeping Force has made mobile suits and the Alaya-Vijnana equipped Human Debris to pilot them a huge hot commodity.
