Why haven't you beaten the superior Mechanic RPG? You don't mind if I post this here do you? There's hardly a mecha game board. Or a mecha game genre really.

Hey thanks. I managed to play a little bit of fm2. Seems like it might be the best in the series. Really wish there was an uncensored pack for the whole franchise. I hear 3 is censored in eng. And maybe the rest of the series has some changes. I don't care for muh ultraviolence, I just hate playing something knowing somethings missing from the only version available to me. Better learn Japanese….better.

I'm playing Front Mission 3, I don't usually like turn based, and this game has a several problems, but I'm really enjoying it so far, 12+ hours in.
Pros:
- Fast paced for a turn based, especially compared to FFTactics
- Interesting story
- Mech customization is decent, not the best but there's variation.
- capture and scrap/sell enemy mechs, use their parts on your mechs, some combos are decent.
- swap around pilots between mechas
- can get characters out of your mechas
- special attacks can damage mecha pilot directly, like piercing attacks,
- some attacks can force eject pilots which is fun as you try to smash the pilot before he can hop back in
- pilot and mech part special abilities, which might be over powered, and randomly played
- internet/email storytelling is a cool idea and nicely done
- I like the aesthetics, still looks good with double resolution
- Missions are varied, with allowing you to fight through areas and choose routes, retreating from enemies, figthing in bases with gun emplacements and spot lights.
Cons:
- combat is a bit too simple in some aspects and a bit "too random", like it doesn't seem to take into account where the attacker is attacking from, what side the attacked has towards the attacker and if there are mech's inbetween, it'll take environment height into account. If you give everyone a backpack with repair slots and maybe missile if they are missile launching then it's easy enough, you can get away with mistakes.
- Worst, most untrained characters storywise are always best in combat and most trained elite killers miss a lot but you can work around, and maybe I'm doing it wrong. One of the high ranking military op guys, I've given him as much accuracy as I can right now, he uses a sniper rifle, and he'll miss something in front of him and his sniper rifle isn't powerful enough for it to be worth the misses. Another guy who has no training, his job before the game story starts is a pleb who's a mech mover, has insane luck with activating special abilities, like he gets extra turns and extra power and zoom shots, I've finished off mechs in one turn with this guy.
- story is intriguing, a bit of a mystery but the characters, humour which is attempted, and story isn't the best.
- the 2 bosses I've fought so far were easily beaten, one was hyped in a 5min story, had a back story about how he's a soldier in military jail because he refuses to fight after accidentally killing is wife who got caught in a firefight… killed him in 2 hits, missile+shotgun
- I'm currently on a mission defending retarded, suicidal, civilians, I think the trick is to tard wrangle them by forming a fence with the mechs.
- You characters talk about not wanting to fight police, or in civvie areas, but never an option to retreat, or to defeat them but leaving them alive, you have to murder them, it's luck to not destroy a mech, but you still need to murder its pilot to take a mech for scrapping/selling.
I've got 4 and 5 for ps2, I hope they fix the problems and don't add to them. I might go back to 1 and 2 as well. I want more like this, I know they're making left alive, but I don't think it'll be the same.

It's like playing through an 80s mecha anime in a glorious 2D action game
You can even punch the shit out of robots, take mecha on Mellowlink style in some cases, team up with a friend, do missile spam, and all sorts of other cool shit

>Whats the leveling and exp like?
It's complicated, you level in a few different ways:
1. You get new hardware, arms, legs, backpack module for power or missiles/grenades/repairs. Either buy or scrap enemy.
2. You get to buy higher levels of upgrade modules for your pilot, and for each individual mech part, you pay to level up bits and pieces and it can get expensive, which means capturing the enemy and selling their mech is good way to go and try not to pay for parts, scrap them from enemy, as you can't scrap their upgrades, they can only be bought.
3. You also get special abilities, seemingly at random during fights, that allow your pilot to do certain things like zoom when firing, or deal attack directly to enemy pilot, or even attack twice per turn. When you get them is random and when your pilot uses them is also random, this is the worse game mechanic so battles your characters seem to be using their special abilities every turn, sometimes they'll use 2 per turn, other battles and one of them might use one once.
4. Each pilot levels up with weapon usage, I'm not really sure how it levels tbh, you can use the "internet" to level up quicker https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/250588-front-mission-3/48295350

The tragedy of Front Mission Evolved is its franchise fanbase.
It's a great game, with amazing gameplay, good music, good graphics for its age, some shitty story you shouldn't care about, and fun customization, but simply because it's not TRPG it got so much shit Square decided to just not do Front Mission for 10 yeas.
And when they finally did, it doesn't even have Front Mission in the title.

If the fanbase mattered there would be no front mission. It seems leaving the wanzer isnt a new concept for the series and neither is action. No need for the whole franchise to be turn based. I for one hope LA is nothing like FmE but thats probably a popular opinion.
Gun Hazard or the Front Mission Online would be ideal for future releases but it's hard to say what square enix will do.
It IS its most visible military themed title so Im sure Square would like to do right by it as oppose to making something new when it's probably unnecessary to do so.
But I agree, FM appears to be on life support unless Square Enix can fully realize the series' inherent potential…

Yet they've pissed off the fan base and now Front Mission is on life support.

The last proper Front Mission was released in 2005 and that was JP only. The last one that was released outside of JP was FM4 and that was in 2004. FM: Evolved came out 5 years after the last proper FM and we had no news on another one, that was after we got screwed out of the west release of FM5. So of course fans are going to be pissed.

I think that SqEn had /m/ audience in mind while they were making their game, instead of thinking about the actual franchise fans.
>gameplay
It was okay. Melee had kind of limited moveset, I guess it's because you always had only one animation (move) for your melee (special skills that make you attack multiple times or with a different weapon don't count) in the turn-based games.
Also the game was quite unbalanced. Sniper rifles and "nimble" Wanzers weren't viable, personally I ended up with a heavy Wanzer with the best shield available, shoulder mounted gatlings and a repair backpack. Everything else felt awfully underpowered after this.
Also the non-Wanzer TPS parts of the game sucked ass and the only barely fun thing in those was shooting enemy Wanzers.
In my opinion, the game needed some sort of a PvE arena/endless mode for maximum gameplay fun, because campaign missions are too linear and scripted, and the multiplayer ended up being dead.
>music
Mediocre orchestrals made by a film scorer. Not terrible, yet not good nor memorable.
>graphics
The Wanzers looked good, and so did the girls
>customization
Customization in Evolved is pretty good. Almost as good as Gundam Breaker and AC games. It's even a bit better in some aspects.
>plot, characters, story, pacing
I loved how cheesy and stupid everything was, especially compared to any other FM entry except for, probably, FM3? It had quite a lot of silly moments. It's like I played "Average Real Robot Anime - The Game", and I enjoyed every part of that shitshow.
Too bad Square Enix would not be able to make something as good as Evolved with their notMGS4+5+Survive.
Now that I think about it, Left Alive is the polar opposite of Evolved: a "serious" TPS game with a grain of mecha, ugly characters and "good" graphics it's bad as shit if you pay enough attention. It just has those flashy flare lens effects that try to imply that the game is some hot serious shit VS comfy and stupid mech game with some shitty TPS elements, attractive female characters and rather plain, non-flashy visuals.

Funny as I ended up with medium wanzer with twin burst rifles, macross missile launchers and ammo back pack.
Maybe it was unbalanced, but it did let you play with different builds and be effective.
