Don't bother with the anime, but the visual novel is pretty cool.

It started out as an eroge game where Al Azif is a purple haired loli in a white dress, and the Demonbane thingie is connected to elder gods and other shit like that, and I think the plot of the eroge is to stop some of those elder gods or somesuch, never played it myself. It got a non-porn anime and manga adaptation, I think, and in one of those comes the thing where the Demonbane is shown to be able to destroy and recreate the universe on its own as much as it wants.

Basically an extremely juiced up Getter Emperor with some Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann thrown into the mix.

It is also an annoying meme that whenever anyone talks about those stupid power level of mechs, some idiot goes "durr hurr muh Demonbane can beat them all". It is annoying, but those "could x beat y" discussions are stupid anyway.

Deomonbane is a visual novel that mixes mecha and lovecraft into a badass combination.

Humanity has started to delve deep into the forbidden secrets, making magic a subject that is studied by science and taught in certain exclusive academies. Our protagonist left one of these under suspicious circumstances and is then hired by a rich heir of a big corporation to find a tome with enough magic power to activate the Deus Machina the company has constructed, Demonbane.

This VN has it all, many giant robots, evil magicians with guns, swords and whatever else kind of weapon you can imagine, eldritch powers, outer gods, rape, muscles, manly friendship, mad scientists, humanoid books, reality breaking powers, tits, cyborg batman with tits, androids and normal people that are still pretty badass.

It has it's flaws, both on the technical and story side, but it's still one hell of a ride and you should at least play the Al Azif route if you are into VNs.

Protips:

Get a guide, the ways to the endings are sometimes pretty convoluted.

Read the bad ending of the Al Azif route, it's the most lovecraft thing in the entire game and shouldn't be missed. It's basically a total reality breakdown

The cutscenes are in a weird video format that can only be played by installing a codec pack like CCCP, if you don't do this, the video won't play.

The voiceacting is inconsistent as in, it's not there most of the time, this is normal although I'm not sure if it's an issue with the english version or just the game in general.

If you want the full story, play AL Azifs route last, since it's the true ending. If you play without a guide, you will probably stumble into it by just picking random choices, since it's the easiest route to get into.
