Sounds fun, I'd been wanting to participate in a zine. I've got a few questions that may or may not be relevant due to my inexperience in the subject: do you have submissions already? Are you going to use github to share the final product? What's your posting schedule if you have one (weekly, monthly?…) and how many pages do you expect an issue to be?

none, i just put my free time, which i have plenty.

>>7122

>do you have submissions already?

Except for photography, MAYBE a short story (the guy haven't spoke to me in a while), and my own short comic, i don't have anything else atm. I admit, it might take a while, especially because zine is manga/comic oriented. Still, its a very fresh idea, not even a week have passed, for now I'm optimistic. And i should mention, that the idea sparked in my mind when browsing lainchan and sushichan; that should explain the themes im aiming at.

>Are you going to use github to share the final product?

Probably not.. i also got a contact from a guy who could host us a small server for zine website, we might just release finished zine there. If he wouldn't be able to host, i think we i can still find something out, like neocities.org maybe?

>What's your posting schedule if you have one (weekly, monthly?…)

Hah, i think its wayyyy to early to say and too early to actually make it a scheduled release, like every month or two. Once a week is out of the question tho, because drawing + putting together a zine, i can't do it in a week.

For now the release dates are just "soon"

It's just too much dependent on submissions, which is something i have no control over, i just try to find the right ppl in the right places.

>and how many pages do you expect an issue to be?

That's also gonna depend on how many and how long the submitted comics gonna be.

Quick update, except for comics, we're doing actually ok, got some photography and glitch art submissions, possible comic strip and a written short story.

If you're interested to submit something, visit https://mtk538.neocities.org/zine.html . I update it frequently, so you always know what we still need, and what we're full on.

Hey, look, I know you already got the first issue out, but if you're after a comic to feature, you're free to use mine, as long as you credit me.

>bitly

There's something about invasive third-party analytics that rubs me the wrong way, in a manner that private tracking doesn't.

I know and I'm sorry, its just the only way to track amount of downloads.

I'm going to push back on that one. There are dozens of tools for tracking analytics, of which many are completely locally hosted, mostly working on things like access logs. OWA, Piwik, AWStats, lots of smaller tools and frameworks. And if a download count is all you're looking for, rolling your own solution is an option, just searching for the URL and getting a count. Maybe something to funnel it to Zabbix if you want graphs on a page, and may wish to expand into monitoring other aspects of the server.

Bitly is just a very convenient way to set it up, which is how the company gets away with being very abrasive on the privacy front. The same could be said of the main channel of communication on the About page.

Not having an aptitude for tech isn't anything to be embarrassed about, but that is a very far cry from impossibility.

Having actually looked at where that link goes, you're not really even tracking the amount of downloads. You're just hosting a Mega link, and you'll get false positives for everyone who backed off after clicking it and seeing that it's a 150MB pdf. There's also nothing to stop people from passing that Mega link around if they wanted to share the zine, which would be more convenient for the user and would bypass your tracking entirely.

I disabled it entirely after your post.

Anyway, an update

Submissions so far, without counting my own stuff. (I)- Important. (2018.11.16):

(I)comics - few "mentioned" that are in making, but 0 100% confirmed or submitted. Looking for more

comic strips - 0

(I) Illustrations etc. - 2 authors submitted, 2 more announced. Still looking for more

(I) Photos - 1 author submitted. Looking for more

(I) Poems/haiku - 2 authors, several poems. Got enough, submissions closed.

(I) Short stories/written stuff - 1 author, 2 submissions. Still looking for at least 1 more author.

ASCII - 0

others - not sure

So the zine #2 is approx 6/14 done. But as you can see, we have 0 comics so far.

I'm absolute shit at drawing, but what kind of short stories are you looking for? Not promising anything just yet though.

there are 2 short stories in issue #1 if you want to get an idea, but if yours fit the themes on our website, ( https://blackfogzine.org/guideline.html#subm ) it should be fine. I have 1 more spot for a story. so if you're sure you'll do it, send me an email or pm on discord and ill reserve a slot for ya.

Did you go with a self-hosted solution, or are forgoing analytics entirely for the time being?

I don't know about your hosting setup, but if it's a VPS and can read the access log, it'd be pretty trivial to parse said log to spit out the number of requests. You don't even need to set up a redirect or use some asynchronous javascript bloat now that you're hosting the file yourself.

well, tbh i'm a noob when it comes to that, and its self-hosted, but on a friend's server. there are different things there, not just my website. But I'll ask him if there is a possibility, thanks for the tip

Pretty sure nginx keeps access logs by default. Not sure if there's any rotation involved, though, that is, if old logs get rewritten, put into separate files or if you just have one monolithic beast. You likely won't be seeing enough traffic to cause a storage issue, so that's something.

If he's not really the kind of guy to do any favors and all you want are total download numbers in the absolute bare-bones bottom-of-the-barrel minimal-effort automated solution, maybe a daily cronjob that automatically updates a web-accessible text file produced by grepping the access logs, looking for a count of lines with BlackFogZine01.pdf in them. Would be a few minutes of effort tops, if even that.

If not, or if there's the slightest chance you might want even slightly more in the not-too-distant future, just ask him up front what you'd like and what he'd be willing to do.

Also, probably not a good idea to have page errors report anything about the backend. Seeing both the platform and version number makes it very convenient for both people and bots to abuse known exploits, should he forget to update. I don't think nginx 1.10.3 has any arbitrary code execution bugs, but you never know when things get left unmaintained for a while.
