Hello there anons, newfag here. Didn't know we had a board like this here on quadro^2chan, but now that I do, I think I may frequent it since I do have a thing for drawing and painting.
On to the point of my thread: Before I even found this board I found this video art course on Steam: http://store.steampowered.com/app/494900/
However as I am a poorfag I never bought it, other things come first. I don't even know if it's good. So tell me, is it good and more importantly, do you have a free download link somewhere?
Cheers anons

If it's that 'Phoenix Riven' course (can't view it right now) I would say: No. look at the dude's personal work. It's not good. Also it takes him a long time to explain things. He stammers and stutters way too much. He explains some good facts (you can learn elsewhere) but he's not good enough to teach yet. His videos are/were available free on his website 'alienthink.com' or something like that but that may have changed

You can literally watch this stuff from his website right now.

The guy isn't bad at teaching some generalized concepts, but he's definitely not "master" material by ANY stretch of the imagination.

Also, it's not completely free on his website. Lessons 20 and up need to be bought through Steam or some other site

I'd say Hampton, Vilppu and Loomis are pretty much the canonical trifecta as far as books are concerned. Proko might be kind of annoying but his course and materials on youtube and his website are probably the best video instruction you can ask for
>>5497
The videos iirc are like a half hour each, if you can make it to, video 4 without falling asleep you're already doing better than me.

Rey Bustos anatomy course on new master's academy weighs in at 16 hours. Was a student of Hogarth, does dissections of cadavers, as well as a good artist and teaches effectively. Couple this with anatomy for sculptor's and you will get a strong fondation from a guy who knows his shit.
Compared to riven who hems and haws and grunts for the 160+ hours of his course with a baby crying in the backroung during a video . I only got through his skeletal and for what I learned I could have simply done studies and figured out the proportions of each bone myself, so never felt the desire to sit through the grueling muscle course.
As said was said proko is good material even if he's an annoying copy monkey.

Yeah Rey Bustos is the shit. His voice kind of sounds like a cartoon character, I can't help but smile when he's explaining stuff. He's very "formulaic" but it's very accurate and authoritative too. I think Proko's 3D models really puts him over the top though. I wish he had more condensed videos where he just goes over the facts, supplemented with the models, and loses the "shtick". I don't mind his jokes at all really but seeing them a dozen times over is brutal.

How about you guys actually learn anatomy rather than have some looser dumb it down for you?

I do watch dissection videos on YouTube to complement my studies. There's a surprising amount of them.

Blurry renderings and people in armor, way to show what anatomy you know.
Bat lady is all we can go by and lacks a lot of definition in areas that takes the piece to a higher level and that would prove your point.

Nah he knows his shit. No need for further typical 4chan /ic/ style shit-flinging in my humble imho. That said I really don't know what the fr*ckin' fuck he means by actually learn anatomy in that context.

I'll give you an example. If we took a survey of people that viewed these types of tutorial videos and courses, then asked what and where the Anterior Superior Iliac Spine was, how many do you think would be able to answer it? It's one of the most important anatomical landmarks on the human figure, yet somehow, all these people so "seriously" studying anatomy have never heard of it before. Or how about asking what the Coracoid Process is? it's something very important in understanding parts of the figure, yet most people don't even know it exists.
Most people teaching these things learned anatomy from Paul Richer's and Eliot Goldfinger's books, not the way they're teaching it.

When making bold statements you gotta back them up. Stuff we say can affect the people we're giving advice to for years to come. Saying just 'study anatomy' and learning from others stupid is lazy and irresponsible.
>>5555
You're the one who chose what to post, I'm only judging what's given to me. Did you mention you did ecorche? No. Is there any other processes you learned? List them. Don't shit on advice if you don't feel like giving out better info.

You got me, I'll admit I forgot where the coracoid process was-but if one really doesn't know what the ASIS, a major landmark, is they really haven't been paying enough attention. You can learn this stuff to some degree in many different places, whether you're able to internalize it or not is on the individual I guess. I don't think anyone is questioning Richer or Goldfinder's credentials but I don't see how studying them would yield you greater understanding than Peck, for example. As long as the text is authoritative and the drawings or photographs are accurate that's what matters most.
I surmise that if most people don't know that stuff it's because they don't study enough period, not that they haven't been exposed to the proper information. Repetition is extremely important, just as Jeff Watts has said and I'm sure your own instructors have emphasized. Most people, myself included, just aren't putting in the work they should be.

Something I've often wondered, should I learn the names in Latin or in English?
Also, what is important about names beyond discussing anatomy with other artists? I'll bet a lot of people do know what the coracoid process is because it's easily noticeable on one's own body if you explore it often as one should, but of course don't know it by name. Couldn't someone know about anatomy without knowing the names? Sorry if I'm being completely retarded here.

I don't think most of them have english names, fam.
In my personal experience it is fairly difficult to recall an anatomical feature in detail without knowing its name. I don't think it's entirely uncommon for some illustration-focused artists to be able to portray superficial anatomy. Personally I couldn't tell you the name of many visible anatomical landmarks but for what little it's worth I know they're there.
If you want to fully understand something, knowing its name if it has one is a good first step.
