I fucked up at work and left my sketch book out that I was working on while I went to lunch. I came back to see my managers bottle of tea sitting on top of my work. It left a nasty water mark on the page and ruined it. How do you deal with general disrespect for your work? I shouldn't let it bother me, but it has me really dejected.

Your manager is either uncivil on purpose to teach you a lesson, or because she (I'm guessing it's a she) is a clueless dumbfuck who is unfit to manage anything. It's a 50/50. Heads she's an idiot, tails she's an idiot.

Your first priority as an artist shouldn't be approbation or popularity, but improvement. Other people's opinions are useful mainly when they can help you improve. The world is teeming with retards, and it's just as easy for one of them to say "this is garbage" as it is for someone who actually knows something, so the onus is on them to convince me I should give a shit what they think. If they are an expert but don't care to convince me that their opinion matters, then they're functionally identical to the rest of the clueless dumbfucks.

I don't really give a damn. As long as I keep improving I'll make better art pieces in the future; that's also why I rarely get mad when I lose hours of work after a computer failure (most of the practice was still done). If it was my livelihood or if I wanted to share the art afterwards I'd be a bit pissed though. That said, she's still a cunt and doesn't seem to give a shit about art.

Even if she wanted to give OP a lesson she could have done so nondestructively, by hiding the sketch book or something.

Actually it was a guy, hes just a stupid gorilla who doesn't think more than 5 seconds into something. He's only as successful as he is because I'm sure he made some kind of pact with the devil or something. He was aware that I was practicing and I had been constantly showing my progress to him. He apologized and everything but that didn't make me feel better about treating my stuff like a cupholder. He feels bad about it but only because it's polite to.

I can take people saying that my art is garbage or giving me negative criticism, but to actually treat it like that was pretty different to me. Especially when I'm getting excited about getting better, just kinda took the wind out of my sails for a bit. It was just practice so I was able to redo it fairly quick and extra practice never hurts, but that was a sucker punch. This was some great advice though, thanks guys.

There's no use getting too emotionally attached to your work; I would accept his apology as genuine (whether it is or not) and try and move on, bud. There are a lot of people in this world who are barely above animals when it comes to their own self-awareness, if a ring of nasty tea on one of your drawing pages is the worst that happens you're very lucky. I'm not saying it shouldn't annoy you and that you shouldn't expect better from others by the way, I just mean it's kind of one of those things where what's done is done.

Yeah, this nigga >>4777 has the right idea, and good trips. I was about to link that video.

You said this was a new experience so it's probably a big part of why it affects you so (the surprise adds up to the lack of tact of the move). Accept his apology and sleep it off; answering in kind or nurturing a beef would only serve to deteriorate work relations which is pretty fucking awful if you see the guy every other day.

That's a good video. I've definitely felt better as the time has passed and the initial shock of it settled. Like the guy said it was just my paper and not my actual skill that got ruined, its not like I can't remake it, and probably better the next time.

Very true, that comic gave me a hearty chuckle

Protect your work and don't leave it out in the open where any fuck can take it or ruin it.

It looks like what I'd say has already been said in the thread, but yeah.

You're probably not used to having to just trash/move on from whatever you've done, for the sake of practice, and you took a genuine mistake as something with more intent behind it than it had.

And you shouldn't even be drawing at work.

But if you are, at least close your fucking sketchbook, first. I take it you work in an office, so of course people will make mistakes like that, since there's paper everywhere.

And like fuck some normie is going to be able to tell the difference between a sheet of Strathmore and copy paper from Staples.

It is only a sketch book so it's not too serious. I would work around the water mark, incorporate that into a drawing or three if you feel inspired to do things. You have far other things to be concerned about.
