I'm trying to learn by using Vilppu's drawing manual, but so far it's been failure after failure. No matter how many times I apply his method or how hard I try to "feel the pose", my drawings look nothing like his. And the worst part is, I can't even understand what I'm doing wrong. Should I give up and try another method (like Loomis or Dodson)?

Do that for 3 hours a day for 2 months and you should be able to follow along with anything. I think Dodson, Edwards or the Bargue Drawing Course are good preliminary works to build off of because you have to be able to draw from observation to draw pretty much everything, but you also have to know how to move your arm and your media in a manner that's congruent with your perception.
