Why do so many artists who work digitally first paint in monochrome and then add colour over that?

How do they do it? Is this some layer sorcery that I am not aware of, or do they just add a normal one and paint over the previous one.

This has bugged me for the longest time.

Video related.

>How do they do it?

You paint in grayscale taking special consideration for values and contrast. You then go in and make "selections" in photoshop using the lasso tool and alter the color with the "hue/saturation" and "color balance" sliders or something like that.

>Why

I think often so they don't have to commit to a color and can make easy revisions later in case they made a mistake or their client wants a change. It's just one process out of many different ones.

So that's how it is then.

At least now I know. Thanks.

Not OP but, the guy just starts doing the outlines out of nowhere, is he just being a cheeky cunt or is it better than using proportions once you git gud?

Proportions and construction are intrinsic to good drawing; if he's not actually drawing the constructions themselves he's certainly thinking about them and envisioning them in his head. It is strange to see him use relatively clean lines from the get-go, though, almost like Kim-Jung Gi who is renowned for his ability to draw complex scenes in perspective without drawing a perspective grid or construction forms and guidelines at all.

I see. I though it was strange and I kept wondering if it was normal.
