Art school is a joke, I'm supposed to be surprised to hear it?

What about schools like SVA (School of Visual Arts) just for strictly learning animation?

It has great resources to use and there's actual talent within the field.

Don't get me wrong, there are some all-star schools out there, but you have to be very careful.

The problem is choosing art as a career path does not get any less perilous, too. You have to be competent when you enter school and masterful when you leave or else you're screwed. This is why I advocate self education or "cheap"er education alternatives like through News Masters Academy, Gnomon, ctrlpaint.com etc.

I'm currently trying to get my Associates of the Arts and it's awful.

Not only do art classes not teach anything and take up valuable time I could be studying, but they also force critical theory on the students. I have to apply feminist theories on prehistory artworks. This is hell and it makes me want to drop out.

You should drop out, dude. What do you think that degree is going to do for you? Get out of there and get into an atelier, pronto, or transfer to a school that's worth a damn and hopefully you can keep your credits if your degree is really that important. Tell your parents about all this shit, too.

If you intend to stay at that school any longer realize right now that it's not going to get any better, and that they are going to ruin your goddamn life.

You're right, and I'm hoping I can drop out without getting kicked out of the house.

I'm pretty new to the board, so here's one of my drawings I did somewhat recently.

That's pretty solid rendering, man.

Show your parents the images in the first two posts of this thread. They're the truth as only one from "the outside looking in" can see it, condensed into something as approachable as possible even for parents with short attention spans. Show them that facebook post from Steven Silver too. There are tons of good artists out there that will tell you the same thing.

Make sure you have a plan when you tell them this, too.

Go to maps.google.com right now and type in "atelier" and see if anything comes up. Your parents are going to want to see that you'd thought this through and have an alternative in mind and they might not be so satisfied with online courses.

Looks like there's no good ones nearby. I was thinking of doing commissions and maybe paying a cheap rent so I'm not just a burden. I know there are a number of people interested in paying me to draw them stuff. Just hope my mom doesn't find out what I'm being paid to draw.

I really want to get out of this adult daycare.

It sort of depends on what you want to do but if you want to get good at drawing and painting, go to a classical atelier.

The Art Renewal Centre has a map of decent ateliers. You should especially look into The Florence Academy of Art, Angel Academy, Grand Central Atelier and The Repin Academy. These are the key ateliers that offer the highest quality education for people wanting to learn how to draw and paint. These will most likely mean you'd have to move to another country but that's not too bad. I attend one of the ones I listed and most of the students are from another country.

Also, young people tend to have an easier time convincing their parents of going to art school if it's an atelier. Parents tend to see the quality of work produced at ateliers and they sort of realise that it's not some flimsy, wishy-washy, hippy style education that most art schools offer.
