How do you prevent others from copying your business ideas in the free market? I'm not implying that the gubmint should step in and start fucking shit up for everyone, but I'm working on some imageboards right now, and I want to know how you could implement cool features in a way that only YOU have that niche and no one else (eg: a more popular imageboard) tries to copy it.

You don't. You have to rely on trade secrets or first mover advantage. Sorry, I guess that means you are no longer going to be on the capitalist boat. Chau.

you have first mover advantage, people don't choose based on features alone, and in any case you overestimate the ability and the will of others to copy your work.

Unless you've got a trade secret you can easily protect, you don't. You acknowledge that your techniques will be imitated and possibly improved upon, and you don't rely on a new idea for anything besides the initial windfall. Past that point, you either make sure your product is of high quality and at a desirable price, or you focus making multiple new ideas to repeatedly capture the windfall. You might assume that people would focus on the former and not focus as much on developing new stuff, which some people argue stifles R&D and innovation. This isn't the case, because having a strong R&D department has other benefits besides creating new products–it's indicative of your company's future value. This raises your company's value significantly, either on the open stock market if it's a corporation, or when the original owner sells if it's a private company.

1) Trade Secrets
2) Cartels/Group pressures applied to new actors
3) The same as #2 except with the public instead of trade organizations

Life is an endless battle against entropy. You can't secure shit, that's how the universe works and that's how you accelerate progress.

My advice:
1. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
2. Always innovate and never become complacent.
3. Keep a stiff upper lip.

You employ a private security company to commit corporate sabotage on the rival who is copying your ideas, obviously.
