How do you think the gameplay of an ancap strategy game would ideally work?

For the story, I have two things in mind:

>1. You inherit a business empire, and have to get a monopoly on the whole market while trying to out-compete rival business groups and survive the growing power of the state as well as various anti-capitalist factions

>2. You are a multi-millionaire who is sick of liberal totalitarianism and leftism interfering with your life and the lives of your fellow countrymen, so you decide to take your fortune to some unoccupied territory and build a capitalist utopia with other like-minded businessmen while competing with their businesses, and fighting off aggressive states who are unhappy with the amount of freedom that you and your fellow ancaps (or not) enjoy

In ordinary RTSs, you just throw resources at the barracks to shit out soldiers, which go and secure more resources to enable you to shit out even more soldiers, and it's basically a contest between players of who can do this the fastest. No game (not even city-sims) ever takes the market into account, where you have:

>a realistic economy

>citizens having their own lives

>citizens having their own wants and needs

>citizens earning their own money

>citizens spending their own money

>citizens building the villages, towns and cities that you're supposedly trying to protect, and being responsible for all the progress in their part of the game world

>the player being a citizen like everyone else, who can take part in the market and influence it with what power he has (or if playing as the government, having society react appropriately to government laws/actions and looking work solutions and work-arounds to the problems that government creates)

There's an inherent problem with an AnCap strategy game, which lies in the fact that our whole philosophy rejects the idea that one person can properly manage an entire civilization. The very format of the game is anathema to our worldview. You'd have to do one of two things:

1) bring it down to a smaller scale, or

2) reduce the level of control you have over most aspects of the game.

I think the second approach would be more interesting. Rather than telling the barracks how many soldiers to make and where to send them, you'd have to strike deals with various security companies and negotiate policies with them that will produce the kinds of behaviors you want to see. Instead of telling the town center to make 7 villagers and make them harvest food, you bid higher for food, raising the quantity supplied over time. Maybe you could invest in various firms' research and development, and offer prizes and contests for whoever could solve a particular technological problem. New providers of goods and services could pop into and out of existence as the market changes, and who you buy from affects the rest of the economy.

Rather than trying to micro-manage every little thing, most of your influence would come from watching the economic effects of your decisions ripple through the economy. I think that'd be a much more interesting AnCap game than Total War: Ancapistan - Rise of the Company Towns.

What if the point of the game would be to start with a small company, and then achieve a monopoly of the market, at which point you do control everything? You will have to compete with other companies and stuff.

This sounds really cool. The villagers shouldn't just be spawned magically, they should be hired from the labour market to buy the food for you, then you can hire a manager to micro-manage the villagers for you so you can do more important stuff. The thing I would like to see in more strategy games is realistic market processes.

You could do something like X-Com and have turn based squad tactics. The story would be about running a security company and defending the property of various clients. From there you could tack on a business management aspect where you need to pick and choose your customers based on various things and compete with other security companies.

>What if the point of the game would be to start with a small company, and then achieve a monopoly of the market, at which point you do control everything? You will have to compete with other companies and stuff.

In order to achieve a monopoly, by the proper definition of the word (someone with an exclusive legal privilege to sell a good or service in a region), you'd have to have a state. That wouldn't be an AnCap game at that point. If by "monopoly" you mean the more modern sense that you happen to be the sole provider of a good or service in the region, you'd have to set it up such that the optimal size of your firm results in the market-clearing output for all of your goods and services. I don't think a single firm can realistically do this for more than a few types of goods, or across a particularly large area.

I would think the closest you could get to this would be if your firm was in something like financial services or insurance, since that'll connect you with just about everything else.

I don't know. It's a bit of a head-scratcher trying to find a way to bring the player-game relationship in line with AnCap economics, because you can't really control the economy; only interact with it. It might be interesting to include the option of statist measures, but to include the economic consequences of those measures. Try and establish a monopoly of force, and your firm will get increasingly sluggish and wasteful. The more you try to control the economy, the slower it grows. Might be useful as an illustrative tool.

There has to be NPC that does the same thing as you do to represent competition. Imagine having multiple allies where they can also micro manage in the other side of the company at the same level as you do, it would be fun.

Isn't that the fun part? Getting a market monopoly could be the challenge, though not necessarily the goal of the game. The goal could be to earn a record amount of wealth and beat the high-score, or to lead your contract community and compete against other contract communities, some of which are socialist, fascist, primitivist, feminist, etc… (assuming there is no state). I think the fun would be in the process, not the result.

This would fucking great. The state could be a player too and will gradually make business more difficult, and also the final boss for you to either defeat by playing your cards right in the market (good/utopian ending) or to assimilate with and use to get rich (bad/dystopian ending).

There's could also be a game where you are the owner of a private mercenary firm or leader of an armed militia, protecting a stateless community from expansive states and criminal gangs (not that there's a real difference) and you organize attacks to drive out the invading parasites in exchange for gold or other useful goods, or just to protect your home.
