i hope i will not be scolded for offtopic

i have anthropologic question

how did castes emerge in india? i know about their religion, that if one behaves well he or she would be reincarnated in better caste, allegedly

is it because offspring of a chariot maker is more prone to become chariot makers too? so basically no social mobility?

 No.68479

I don't know a lot about the castes but don't they achieve social mobility by reincarnating?

It's a good question, but I don't know much about Indian history, sorry. Still, have this polite and symbolic bump.

An Indian friend told me it's related to skin colour, although people today deny it. Lighter skinned people tend to be more intelligent than darker skinned people. Here are some links I came across

This is so deep rooted and linked to our perceptions of caste, class and skin tone. Upper caste =Fair skin =touchable. Lower caste=dark skin=untouchable. Yes I have pronounced it. Probably most of us will not admit that our hatred for dark skin also comes from our caste bias.

Brahmins, no matter where they're from in India, tend to have allele A … Europeans, in whom allele A is nearly ubiquitous

Accordingly, Brahmins of Uttar Pradesh have the fairest skin

I heard that ancient Indo-Europeans called the Aryans had invaded India thousands of years ago so maybe that might've shaped their culture.

 No.68487

I spoke with an Indian once and asked him, he told me no such things about skin color. Instead it emerged in the 8th century when the kings decried that people were bound to their professions (before that social mobility, rather generational social mobility, was possible). And that's how castes were initiated.

Plus you gotta remember India used to be lots of different kingdoms.

Does skin color have the stereotypical correlations in India that skin color has in other regions?

>>68487

Does anyone know what binding people to professions is intended to accomplish? What are the motives that cause leaders to adopt this policy?

Apparently, the darker skinned Indians are poorer. Poverty and crime are interconnected. Pic related are the Dalit, or untouchables.

"Dalits are among the most disadvantaged members of Indian society; 70 percent live in the most rural and impoverished regions, and nearly 90 percent work in agriculture or remedial, unskilled labor."

Ah… I forgot for a moment how very poor India is when India is poor. Extreme poverty has always scrubbed my inclination to pay attention to those correlations. At some point, though I know not where to draw the line, poverty muddies the issue beyond judgement.

Caste literally means color. When the aryans invaded 3 thousand years ago they created it (and established their religion and culture as well). So yes it was ancient apartheid. Over time they kind of mixed though.

>Lighter skinned people tend to be more intelligent than darker skinned people

in the north yes, but in the south where everyone is dark, the people there are much smarter than the rest of India, in fact south india is better in general
