There's some good scriptural support for universalism. You'll spend some time in purgatory, you may not have the same standing as people that accepted God in their lifetime, but you're not thrown in hell for all eternity.

I also know that the Orthodox Churches don't accept the idea of hell, either. Or rather, to them, it isn't so much a punishment as it is the natural result of rejecting God. You're not made to suffer, you simply lose your connection to God.

In general, the scriptural support for hell is weak. The original, untranslated Bible is far more differentiated. There were five terms that all got translated as hell, but some simply meant afterlife, for example.

There is hades/sheol which is where unsaved sinners go to.

Before Christ, sheol was separated into "Abraham's bosom" aka a temporary paradise and sheol proper. After Christ's finished work on the cross, all saved people go directly to heaven.

During the second coming of Christ, hell, unbelievers, Satan, antichrist, false prophet and demons will be thrown into the lake of fire to be consumed.

tl;dr there's:

1. 3rd heaven or heaven proper, God's abode and all holy angels and saved people. Different dimension/realm.

2. 2nd heaven aka the universe, space, 3D world that we see.

3. 1st heaven, the firmament, our atmosphere, the sky. Satan was cast down to this place and he is the "god of the earth" ever since he deceived our parents in Eden.

4. Hebrew Sheol or Greek Hades, aka hell. This is where sinners go to when they die.

You can only make a case for conditionalism/annihiliationism which says that people eventually die in hell after having fully paid their sin. They cease to exist after punishment. Or the platonic traditional view of hell that it is eternal. Annihaliationism and Traditionalism both have scriptural support, but Universalism does not at all.

What I find most convincing is that the Bible often talks about salvation for "all" people, as in Romans 5:18, and that "eternal" might be a mistranslation and could actually mean "age-enduring". So yes, there is scriptural support. It may not be strong for all I know, but it's there.
