What are your thoughts on electro-magnetic drives? are they even possible? would they have potentially any adventage over already existing systems or is it science for its own sake?

If you want a simple lasgun that works in vacuum then just make a dazzler. Flash powder, efficient enough lens array, blowback operation with relatively high RPM.
