A metal spike thing that he got for my mother that can apparently "injure severely when pushed under an attacker's ribs with force," which is totally going to happen when a 120 pound woman is attacked by a 200 pou d feral silverback and which will be very useful when attached to a keychain buried at the bottom of her purse (seriously, it took her like fifteen seconds of digging to pull it out to show me).

The stuff he got to "protect our house" is even worse. A gimmicky doorbell that lets you see who's at the door from your smartphone, which will offer a perfect view of an attacker throwing a rock through the completely unreinforced floor-to-ceiling window right next to the front door. An alarm system that will automatically phone the police so they'll be ready to clean up the gore when they show up twenty minutes later (if you're lucky). A flimsy chain lock for the front door (the one next to the floor-to-ceiling window). A new deadbolt that "can't be picked" (so Tyrese can't use the lockpicks he's using as toothpicks to unlock the door next to the floor-to-ceiling window). A friendly little labrador that I guess might yap a bit before rolling over to get his tummy rubbed. And finally, a motion-activated floodlight that will totally scare away criminals.

I don't even know what to do anymore. Every time I talk about preparedness, the rest of my family goes on about their recession proof stocks, rental homes, and airguns being their golden tickets to surviving when the SHTF. I've heard people compare other peoples' attitudes towards prepping to people laughing at Noah for building the ark because they don't see a storm coming, but for me it seems like I'm building an ark and the rest of my family sees the storm coming, but they're convinced it'll be a minor squall and they're focused on stocking up on boots so they can jump in the puddles after the storm is over. They just seem completely thoughtless when it comes to self-protection. And it's not like they've completely got their heads in the sand. They realize things are going to go tits up. But they're convinced it'll just be a little recession and they'll be warm and dry with their rental property in the middle of the Democratic People's Republic of New Aztlan, their pieces of paper saying they own part of a "recession proof" company, and a glorified BB gun.

How do I get them to take things seriously /k/? How do I break through the normalcy bias? I am worried that things will get very bad very soon, and I don't want my family to be brutalized by what happens. I've got myself taken care of, and I will definitely do everything I can to take care of them regardless of how prepared they are, but with them blind to the true severity of the situation I'm not sure what I can do, and I'm afraid that by the time they realize how bad things are it will be too late.

There's something I've noticed regarding the general person's attitude towards preparedness. Some people (particularly the more left-leaning college hipster types) feel a strange kind of hostility towards people who prepare. My parents are the opposite. They think the apocalypse will happen in their lifetime. They have water filters, guns, ammo, and food for months. They even practice with their guns. But, my mother had a hard time opening one of the cans. No physical ability to survive.
