Wa-alaikumussalam.
One of the first thing you should do is visit your local masjid. It's better to ask them.
Try learning about the five pillars of Islam and six pillars of iman. Islam is a religion of submission and it's better for you to have a strong foundation (faith) before looking at rituals.

Wa-alaikumussalam.
Thank you for guidance. I do have faith, I have now understood and seen the wonders performed by Allah in my life, and now is the time for submission. I will do as you say.

All this is secondary, first we teach him tawheed, then salat, then zakat. Fiqh comes later. Don't rush him.

Mu'adh (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sent me as a governor to Yemen and (at the time of departure) he instructed me thus: "You will go to people of the Scripture (i.e., the Jews and the Christians). First of all invite them to testify that La ilaha ill Allah (There is no true god except Allah) and that Muhammad (ﷺ) is His slave and Messenger; and if they accept this, then tell them that Allah has enjoined upon them five Salat (prayers) during the day and night; and if they accept it, then tell them that Allah has made the payment of Zakat obligatory upon them. It should be collected from their rich and distributed among their poor; and if they agree to it, don't take (as a share of Zakat) the best of their properties. Beware of the supplications of the oppressed, for there is no barrier between it and Allah."

It's basically the same thing Jesus said when asked the same question: Worship the one and only God and love your neighbor.
From hadith:
Abu Hamzah Anas bin Malik, radiyallahu 'anhu, who was the servant of the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam, reported that the Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam, said:
"None of you truly believes (in Allah and in His religion) until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself"

It's a sort of "do unto others" thing. Love your neighbor as yourself. If you live in plenty and prepare a great feast, but turn away the hungry; then you are seriously screwin' up.

In Islam, intent is everything. You can perform the most holy and righteous deed, but if your intent is selfish, then your good deed is meaningless. You may fool everyone around you, but you'll never fool God.

Maybe, but it's not good, the important thing is to treat them fairly. For example if someone's father is a kaffir that hates Islam, like the father of Abraham pbuh, then there is hatred allowed, but he still served his father well until the proof showed itself that he was an enemy of Allah swt.

>But if our father commands us to worship other Gods against Allah, what are we to do?
Follow the example of Ibrahim (pbuh), when his father threatened him:
AND, LO, [thus] spoke Abraham unto his father Azar: "Takest thou idols for gods? Verily, I see that thou and thy people have obviously gone astray!" - 6:74
He answered: "Dost thou dislike my gods, O Abraham? Indeed, if thou desist not, I shall most certainly cause thee to be stoned to death! Now begone from me for good!" - 19:46
[Abraham] replied: "Peace be upon thee! I shall ask my Sustainer to forgive thee: for, behold, He has always been kind unto me. - 19:47
But I shall withdraw from you all and from whatever you invoke instead of God, and shall invoke my Sustainer [alone]: it may well be that my prayer [for thee] will not remain unanswered by my Sustainer." - 19:48
Later he disavowed himself from his people and asked forgiveness for his father
Indeed, you have had a good example in Abraham and those who followed him, when they said unto their [idolatrous] people: "Verily, we are quit of you and of all that you worship instead of God: we deny the truth of whatever you believe; and between us and you there has arisen enmity and hatred, to last until such a time as you come to believe in the One God!" The only exception was Abraham's saying to his father "I shall indeed pray for [God's] forgiveness for thee, although I have it not in my power to obtain anything from God in thy behalf." [And Abraham and his followers prayed:] "O our Sustainer! In Thee have we placed our trust, and unto Thee do we turn: for unto Thee is all journeys' end. - 60:4
Then it became clear his father is an enemy of Allah swt
9:114 And Abraham's prayer that his father be forgiven was but due to a promise which he had given the latter [in his lifetime]; but when it was made clear unto him that he had been God's enemy, [Abraham] disavowed him - [although;] behold, Abraham was most tender-hearted. most clement.
So move out and disavow him, your hatred is justified since he is a pagan.

Quick rundown on why democracy is shirk:
Democracy is based on the majority will of the people and the absolute authority to mankind.
But the quran says majority isn't guided:
And if you obey most of those upon the earth, they will mislead you from the way of Allah. They follow not except assumption, and they are not but falsifying. 6:116
And that authority to legislate is only for Allah (swt):
“The Hukm (Legislating, Commands, Judgment) is for none but Allah. He has commanded that you worship none but Him, that is the (true) straight religion, but most men know not.” [12: 40]
"Those who believe fight in the cause of Allah , and those who disbelieve fight in the cause of Taghut. So fight against the allies of Satan. Indeed, the plot of Satan has ever been weak." [4: 76]
What is a taghut?
“Have you seen those (hypocrites) who claim that they believe in that which has been sent down to you, and that which was sent down before you, and they wish to go for judgment (in their disputes) to the Taghut while they have been ordered to reject them. But Shaytan (Satan) wishes to lead them far astray.” [4: 60]
Taghut (ar. طاغوت, ṭāġūt, pl. ṭawāġīt) is an Islamic terminology denoting a focus of worship other than Allah. In traditional theology, the term often connotes idols, Satan and jinn. The term is also applied to earthly tyrannical power, as implied in surah An-Nisa (4) verse 60
So anyone who does not rule with the law of shariah is a taghut. Fighting in the army of the taghut makes one a kaffir described in the quran.
“They (Jews and Christians) took their rabbis and their monks to be their lords besides Allah”
[9: 31]
Once while Allah’s Messenger (pbuh) was reciting this verse, Adi bin Hatim (RA) said, ‘O Allāh’s Messenger! They do not worship them’. Allah’s Messenger (pbuh) said: ‘Yes they did. They (rabbis and monks) prohibited the allowed for them (Christians and Jews) and allowed the prohibited, and they obeyed them. This is how they worshiped them’. [Narrated by Ahmad, at-Tirmidhi and Ibn Jarir]
And this shows that the candidates of democracy are claimants of lordship and godhood since they claim to have the right to create laws and remove other laws, and those who vote for them, or work with their system, take them as lords other than Allah(swt), and their status in Islam, is kufr apostasy and exit from the ummah as polytheists.
