I mean it's not 100% impossible, but it's way harder to do something without a good or bad incentive. Some ppl can be devoted to worship all their lives and not expect anything in return from Allah, but most can't. So it's a general rule that humans will compete for their desires and self interest. But Allah directs that competition for something that is good i.e jannah. Islam is a realistic religion, it does not expect everyone to be monks. So it promises everyone, something similar but far superior to the good things we love in this dunya. As to give us a goal that we can try to imagine and work towards.
