black dye:
" Jabir bin Abdullah reported that Abu Quhaafah was led (to the audience of the Holy Prophet) on the day of the conquest of Makkah and his head and beard were white like hyssop, whereupon Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said: “Change it with something but avoid black (Sahih Muslim Book:24 Chapter: 18 Hadith 5243 &5244)
Narated By Abu Dharr : The Prophet (pbuh) said: The best things with which grey hair are changed are henna and katam. (Abu Dawud Book:28 Hadith 4193

>except black
That hadith is sometimes interpreted to mean you can’t dye your beard your natural color to hide gray hair. It misleads people.
But you can if you are in war, to scare the enemy.

1) If a warrior (mujahid) used black hair dye in order to put awe and fear into the hearts and minds of the enemy, then all the scholars agree that it is permissible. (al-Fatawa al-Hindiyya, 5/329)

The issue is much broader than one hadith. Many ahadith on this issue must be taken into account. The context of that hadith itt was directly specified tailored to an individual, not a general decree. Scholars process all this information holistically.

And if someone’s intention is to dye the hair to strike fear into the enemy in battle then the Quranic injunction to strike fear in the enemy must enter the equation.

>If a man is advanced in age with white hair and a beard, it would hardly be appropriate for him to dye his hair black. On the day of the conquest of Makkah, Abu Bakr brought his aged father, Abu Quhafah, carrying him until he had him seated in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). On seeing Abu Quhafah’s snow-white hair, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘Change this, but avoid black.’ (Fath Al-Bari)
>In contrast, if a man is not of such advanced age or feebleness as that of Abu Quhafah, there is no harm in his using black dye. In this regard, Az-Zuhri said, ‘We dyed our hair black when the face looked young, but discarded it when the face became wrinkled and the teeth decayed.’ (Reported by Ibn Abu `Asim in the book on ‘Dyeing the Hair‘)
>Some of the early Muslims, including some Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) such as Sa`d ibn Abi Waqqas, `Uqbah ibn `Amr, Al-Hassan, Al-Hussayn, Jareer, and others permitted the use of black dye. Some scholars do not consider the use of black dye as permissible except during time of war, with possibility of making the enemy thrown off balance by seeing all Muslim soldiers in their blossoming youth.
>Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated, ‘The best thing with which to dye gray hair is Henna and Katm.’ (Mentioned in Fath Al-Bari) Henna makes the hair red, while Katm, a plant from Yemen, colors it black, tinged with red. Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says, ‘Abu Bakr dyed his hair with Henna and Katm, and `Umar dyed it with Henna only.'”

I prefer to just leave it grey. I mean, I have no enemies to put awe and fear into and I think the grey is more distinguished.

Mine isn't really very long so I imagine it'd be hard. My hair is getting pretty long so I'm gonna plait it inshallah as the Prophet occasionally did. Pic related.
