Does anyone on /islam/ own a misbaha? It's a type of bracelet or necklace used for keeping count during prayers. And I was thinking about making one. I'm wondering what is the significance of the three "tails"? Almost every misbaha I've seen has them, and I am wondering if it's ornamental or if the three tails serve some useful purpose. Anyway if you own a misbaha, I'd love it if you could post a picture in this thread that I can use as a reference for making my own.

It's used to keep count how many times you did tasbih. You do one round of "SubhanAllah", one of "Alhamdulillah" and another of "Allahu Akbar".

I knew a new convert who used a sibha, she brought one to a lecture and a brother grilled her calling it sufi bidah. He broke it apart or threw it away, can't remember. She stopped practicing after that.

I have 3 or 4 of them. I don't use them anymore, but they're terrific for new converts.

Same. People gave me a bunch but I don’t use them. It’s much easier for me to use my hand for counting adkhar. In my mancave I might be able to find some for a pic.

That reflects poorly on both people, may Allah heal them.

I'll take a pic of mine as well later today. I believe them to be excellent tools for those recently converted. I honestly don't believe Allah would be angry at people for counting on beads or stones.

I wouldn't call somebody who acts like that a "brother." Sounds like an abusive person who uses their religion as an excuse for bad behavior, like a lot of the Christians I grew up around.

Nope. I'm sure prayer beads are a Christian innovation, or they borrowed them from buddhists monks they encountered.
Actually they do seem relaxing and useful, but I'm afraid to buy such a thing.

It varies from scholar to scholar, but counting beads isn't bid'ah. Some say it is better to count on the fingers, but very few say that it's outright forbidden to use pebbles or "date stones". If you wish to use them and it would benefit you to do so, there is nothing wrong with it. Just don't carry them around in your hand as a sign of religion. I keep mine in my pocket.
