EXCLUSIVE: The servers for former President Donald Trump's TRUTH Social are up and running and will have the platform fully operational by the expected end-of-quarter launch date, FOX Business has learned.

Sources familiar told FOX Business that beta testing for the Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG) TRUTH Social is also underway, and that the average user in the United States can expect to download the app and create accounts by the end of March.

TRUTH Social, while not yet public, is available for pre-order in the Apple App Store.

Sources told Fox News that TMTG is not relying on any traditional big tech companies for infrastructure needs, sources said, but rather on its cloud services partnership with Rumble.

A source familiar told FOX Business that Rumble is positioning itself as an alternative to both YouTube and Amazon Web Services (AWS).

TMTG CEO Devin Nunes was the first elected official to use Rumble’s video platform in 2020.

The timeline for a fully operational launch is in line with what former President Trump told Fox News in an exclusive interview in December, when he teased the social media platform would be "in great shape" by the end of the first quarter, in March 2022.

Those involved in the final stages of development told FOX Business last month that TMTG partnered with Hive – a San Francisco-based Series D start-up that provides automated solutions through cloud-based artificial intelligence for understanding images, videos and text content. Hive’s technology provides automated content moderation across video, image, text and audio.

"We want to be very family-friendly, we want this to be a very safe place, and we are focused on making sure any illegal content is not on the site," Nunes said in an exclusive interview with FOX Business last month.

Meanwhile, in a statement last week, Trump teased the new platform, saying that "TruthSocial will fight back against Big Tech so we can protect our rights to free expression."

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Wednesday warned police partners of protests similar to those in Canada that it said could even disrupt the Super Bowl or the State of the Union address.

DHS “has received reports of truck drivers potentially planning to block roads in major metropolitan cities in the United States in protest of, among other things, vaccine mandates. The convoy will potentially begin in California early as mid-February, potentially impacting the Super Bowl scheduled for 13 February and the State of the Union address scheduled for 1 March,” DHS wrote in a memo shared with police partners.

For the last two weeks, protests in Ottawa have shut down traffic and aggravated citizens of Canada’s capital city as truckers honk in anger over requirements that truck drivers must be fully vaccinated to be permitted entry into Canada, a requirement the U.S. government has also implemented.

The protests have come to be seen as a reflection of fatigue with pandemic restrictions that exists around the world and is a threat to existing governments. Pandemic fatigue has been seen as a factor in Biden’s low approval ratings and the dismal outlook for Democrats in this year’s midterms.

It’s unclear how serious plans are for a similar protest in the U.S., though groups have announced plans on social media as the Canadian protests draw more attention.

“The People’s Convoy” group on Facebook is already plotting a “March for Freedom Convoy to DC 2022.”

Facebook posts from organizers state that truckers will arrive in Coachella Valley in Indio, Calif., on March 4 for a rally “to defeat the unconstitutional mandates.”

The convoy will then “roll out of California,” with details to come on forthcoming rallies.

The protests in Canada have been linked to far-right extremism, an issue for Biden and law enforcement following the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

In Ottawa, some protesters have been seen carrying signs and flags with swastikas on them, and one reportedly danced on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the city.

Trudeau has called the protesters a “fringe majority” and associated them with the rise of misinformation online and conspiracy theories.

In the U.S., the original group organizing demonstrations in Washington was removed from Facebook after it hit more than 100,000 members because it violated the platform’s policies about QAnon.

The Grid reported on Tuesday that a GoFundMe page for the Canadian truckers, which raised more than $8 million before it was shuttered, could have been influenced by right-wing donors in the U.S. White House press secretary Jen Psaki this week didn’t have a comment about this reporting.

Biden announced in October a mandate that requires essential foreign travelers who cross into the U.S. by land borders to be fully vaccinated. The mandate includes truck drivers and went into effect in January soon after Canada’s mandate went into effect.

The White House has expressed worries about how protests might affect the free flow of goods and people across the U.S.-Canada border. Truckers this week blocked the Ambassador Bridge in Ontario, which 25 percent of trade between U.S. and Canada flows through.

The White House is watching the situation at the bridge “very closely” and the president is focused on it, Psaki said on Wednesday. She noted that the blockage “poses a risk to the supply chain” and could disrupt automakers because parts can’t travel.

While the protesters have been characterized as a fringe group in Canada, the vaccine mandate for truckers has received attention from Democrats and trade groups in the U.S.

“[Tester] supports the right to peacefully protest, but shutting down the border does nothing to support Montana’s truckers, producers, or our economy, which is why these folks should stop blocking traffic and let travel resume,” a Tester spokesperson told The Hill on Wednesday.

The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association, a trade group made up of more than 150,000 North American truckers, wrote to Biden on Monday requesting that professional truck drivers be exempted from the vaccination requirements for non-U.S. essential workers seeking to enter the U.S. via land ports of entry.

A spokeswoman said the trader group supports its members' choice to legally and peacefully protest but would not officially participate as a trade association.

“We would like for leaders in D.C. to listen to, and take action on, the concerns of truck drivers that have been expressed to them for years such as the truck parking shortage, detention time, retention of drivers and government overreach. If the U.S. does see the same situation happening here as in Canada, it is a result of Congress and current and past administrations failing truckers for too long,” said Norita Taylor, spokeswoman for the association.

The American Trucking Associations, a trade group for the U.S. trucking industry, did not respond to a request for comment on whether it supports a possible U.S. protest.

Samir Kapadia, the head of the trade practice at the Vogel Group, argued that if truckers in the U.S. mirror the protests seen in Canada, Biden will be criticized for any impact it has on the supply chain.

“The unique element of this scenario is how a social protest around vaccine mandates crippled the supply chain—it wasn’t systemic. We’ve been facing supply chain constraints for almost two years, but this is the first time a social issue prompted such a significant collapse. Should this persist or U.S. truckers mimic the Canadian protests, the president will face greater scrutiny on a national level,” Kapadia said.

Russia has for a couple months insisted that it has no plans to invade Ukraine, even as positioned extra forces in the south near the border, but the Kremlin is now issuing fresh warnings on its 'red lines' after reports emerged that Ukraine has requested THAAD missile defense systems from the US military.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov responded to the reports Wednesday, saying the missile request if true would mark a serious "provocation" and that it would be a significant setback for the Ukraine crisis, according to RIA news agency.

However, Ryabkov admitted that at this point the US THAAD deployment remains "hypothetical" and appears to the be speculation among the media. Reports suggested they would be deployed around the large northeast Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, which Ryabkov dismissed as "blackmail and a provocation," according to TASS news agency.

"Everything that is happening in this field from the standpoint of supplying Ukraine with military equipment, ammunition and weapons, including lethal weapons, is an attempt to exert extra pressure, including military-technical pressure, on Russia. Obviously, there is a great deal of blackmail involved, too," Ryabkov said.

Referring to Ukraine's military and its Western backers in NATO, he said "this group of [Russia’s] opponents has virtually nothing left in its arsenal by and large."

"Instead of de-escalation, including an unconditional demand Kiev comply with the Minsk agreements to the full extent there have followed all sorts of media fakes. Some of these are obviously addressed to the incompetent public at large, which is eager to buy any such news, in particular, negative sensations. But we do not yield to provocations. What he have seen is a provocation of the first water," Ryabkov added.

Meanwhile, President Putin reportedly complained to his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron when the two met in Moscow for some five hours that NATO is continuing to "pump Ukraine with weapons."

"NATO member countries continue to pump up Ukraine with modern types of weapons, allocate significant financial resources for the modernization of the Ukrainian army. They send military specialists and instructors," Putin said at a press conference immediately following the summit with Macron, which was aimed a finding a path toward de-escalation.

WASHINGTON — An effort to strictly control stock ownership by members of Congress is gathering momentum on Capitol Hill for the first time in a decade, fueled by politically vulnerable lawmakers who recognize the potency of signaling to voters that they will act on the perceived corruption in Washington.

The issue of banning the ownership and trading of individual stocks by lawmakers is complex. It raises questions of just what other kinds of personal investments or economic liabilities could be perceived as conflicts of interest, and how far the prohibitions should extend. Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California and Steny H. Hoyer of Maryland, the House majority leader, initially expressed opposition, and even now, it is not clear how far Ms. Pelosi will go to ensure passage of strong legislation.

But with pressure mounting from rank-and-file members in both parties and both chambers of Congress, the top two Democrats on Wednesday signaled an openness to action.

Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the majority leader, took to the Senate floor to embrace a stock ownership ban and encourage Democrats to reach out to Republicans to reach agreement quickly.

Ms. Pelosi was less effusive, telling reporters at her weekly news conference that she would accept such a ban, but with a complicating twist. She said she wanted any stock limitations, including a toughening of existing disclosure rules on stock ownership and trading that now apply to members of Congress and the executive branch, to also apply to the judicial branch of government, especially the Supreme Court.

The judiciary branch does have ethics rules that oblige some disclosure, in some cases more quickly and more often than the congressional branch. But an investigation last month by The Wall Street Journal found hundreds of instances in which federal judges presided over cases involving companies in which they or their family members owned stock.

“It has to be governmentwide,” she said, adding, “the judiciary has no reporting. The Supreme Court has no disclosure. It has no reporting of stock transactions, and it makes important decisions every day.”

Multiple proposals for a trading ban already exist in the House and Senate, including a new bill unveiled this week by Senators Elizabeth Warren, Democrat of Massachusetts, and Steve Daines, Republican of Montana. One proposal by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Democrat of New York, and Representative Katie Porter, Democrat of California, reintroduced on Wednesday, would ban individual stock trading and extend financial disclosure rules to both the judiciary and the Federal Reserve Board.

The speaker’s caveats angered some of the strongest proponents of fast action to ban congressional stock ownership, who saw them as a veiled attempt to ground the effort. For all the merits of applying disclosure rules to the judiciary, they argued, such legislation would spark debate on the constitutional separation of powers and the rights of Congress to dictate to the judicial branch.

“That is literally a different conversation, and one that is so hard to wrap your arms around that you’ve tanked the movement,” said Representative Abigail Spanberger, Democrat of Virginia and a co-author of bipartisan stock-ban legislation that has been gaining momentum.

She added, “I haven’t heard from a single constituent, ‘I’m really worried about the Supreme Court ruling in such a way for their personal gain.’ That’s not a thing.”

The drive to ban congressional stock trading was touched off in 2020 by a spate of revelations that senators from both parties had traded health care stocks after closed-door briefings on the then-nascent coronavirus pandemic.

It has gathered momentum in recent weeks as Democrats from conservative-leaning districts, eager to demonstrate independence from Ms. Pelosi and other party leaders, have taken up the issue to appeal to a growing populist sentiment among their constituents. Proponents readily admit that voters perceive Congress as corrupt.

“The idea that we’re coming in and buying, selling, buying, calling in puts, it’s a bipartisan problem,” said Representative Chip Roy, Republican of Texas, who co-wrote the stock-ban legislation with Ms. Spanberger in 2020.

Navarro has backed former President Donald Trump's baseless claims that voter fraud cost him the 2020 election.

Navarro has also said that he and Steven Bannon concocted a plan to overturn Trump's election loss.

The House select committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riot subpoenaed former President Donald Trump's trade advisor Peter Navarro on Wednesday.

In a letter to Navarro, committee chairman Bennie Thompson wrote that the former White House official has documents and information relevant to the panel's probe.

Thompson wrote Navarro "reportedly worked with Steve Bannon," referencing Trump's one-time chief strategist, "and others to develop and implement a plan to delay Congress's certification of, and ultimately change the outcome of, the November 2020 presidential election."

Navarro has backed Trump's baseless claims that the widespread voter fraud cost the former president the 2020 presidential election. Additionally, in his new book "In Trump Time," Navarro said he and Bannon cooked up a plan called the "Green Bay Sweep" to overturn Trump's election loss.

Thompson noted that in Navarro's book, he "reportedly described this plan as the 'Green Bay Sweep,' and stated that it was designed as the 'last, best chance to snatch a stolen election from the Democrats' jaws of deceit.'"

The January 6 committee requested that Navarro hand over documents and sit for a deposition to answer questions related to the investigation.

Soon after the letter went public, Navarro responded by pointing to Trump's claim of executive privilege.

"As the domestic terrorists running the January 6 partisan witch hunt are well aware, President Trump has invoked Executive Privilege; and it is not my privilege to waive," Navarro told CNN in a statement. "They should negotiate any waiver of the privilege with the president and his attorneys directly, not through me."

Navarro went on to cite his book's mention of "Green Bay Sweep," adding that "the last three people on God's good earth who wanted chaos and violence on Capitol Hill were President Trump, Steve Bannon, and I."

In October, Bannon defied a subpoena from the January 6 committee, similarly claiming protection through Trump's executive privilege. But the House later voted to hold him in criminal contempt of Congress, and in November, a federal grand jury indicted Bannon on two counts of contempt of Congress.

Several other figures in Trump's circle have failed to comply with the committee's subpoenas, including former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows. The House voted to hold Meadows in contempt of Congress in December.

Some notes before we start: the term web3 today is sometimes used synonymously to mean cryptocurrency, blockchain tech, virtual reality/augmented reality & the metaverse. I find that people already have a more intuitive understanding of how VR/AR may change the future. Therefore, I’ll only be writing about how crypto & blockchain tech in the context of web3 will transform the future, since it’s a bit more challenging to understand and abstract in its concepts.

Often this subject is explained with technical specifications or more commonly with political terms, ideas about liberty, decentralization, censorship, and power. These are all important; but what ultimately determines if web3 powered by crypto is the future lies in the economic and productive value it brings, the increases in quality of life it can achieve. These are the aspects I hope to make clear.

Where we’ve come from and where we are

All of the iterations of the web are digital revolutions, i.e. not only do more of our analog (physical) lives move to the digital realm, but new digitally native (digital-first) experiences are invented as well.

Web1 (1990s): a revolution in information availability.

Information and content from the real world is put online. Information is no longer a local phenomena nor a physical one, but is available for anyone with an internet connection to access. Early web protocols also allow for file transfers, emails, and web pages.

Examples: personal web pages, Encyclopedia Britannica & Encarta online, FTP, MapQuest

Web2 (2000-): a revolution in creation, experience, and connection.

The static becomes dynamic, and a convergence of hardware and software technologies enable us to experience rich interfaces and interactions on the web. Our lives start to become increasingly digital - compare what percent of your daily attention is focused online in 1999, then 2009, and then 2019. The ecosystem and interface of web2 is now rich enough where people can spend the majority of their lives online - from their careers, relationships, hobbies, investments, etc. - we now spend much of our lives in digital space. We also consume most of our content digitally, create much of our output digitally, and connect most frequently with others through messaging apps and social networks.

Examples: YouTube, Google Docs, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp, Robinhood, smart home & smart health devices

Web3 (2015-): a revolution in coordination, ownership, and value transfer.

I’ll break down each of these web3 revolutions in the ‘Web3 Paradigm Shifts’ section further below. It’s important to note first, however, that much of what will happen in web3 has its roots in web2. What’s often lost in all the web3 talk is that the web2 era is not over and will continue to produce enormous value and new companies. Let’s see how web3 powered by crypto is the next logical step to some of the revolutions of web2.

Web3 Extensions of Web2.

New and more powerful networks.

In web1 times, your networks might’ve included your local community, your job, your family, and friends you grow up with. Maybe you were part of a mailing list or a forum if you were savvy online. In web2, networks proliferated rapidly, and continue to explode. You might have networks on FB, telegram groups, IG niches, corners of Twitter, or varied family/friend WhatsApp groups.

This network creation continues in web3 with the introduction of the value network. Examples include Ethereum, Solana, Polkadot, countless others - each currency representing its own individual network of users. In addition, you have the tokens built on top of these programmable currencies, tokens that any individual or business can issue. The result is a proliferation of value networks that are themselves nested into a larger, more powerful network that it can communicate with and transfer between. This is an extremely powerful new invention because a value network can be added to all of our existing networks in web2 - to our existing social networks, messaging networks, and content networks - or to brand new networks entirely. Essentially any network can be monetized, tokenized, or incentivized, creating supercharged versions of our already rich variety of networks.

Explosion of creative activity, niches, and formats.

Even if we just include web2 companies launched in the past few years alone - TikTok, Substack, Clubhouse, etc. - there’s so many creative and productive niches for individuals to occupy. Couple that with increasingly easier ways to distribute content among a proliferation of platforms (aka networks), it’s no wonder there has been an explosion of creative activity and individual power over the past 20 years. In the web1 world, we still mainly had movie stars and bestselling authors. In web2, we have stars and activists in every genre, category, and format you could ask for. What progresses in web3 is the further expansion of platforms, niches, and content types. Most notably, you will see more purely digital creation and digital reward (e.g. create an opera in a virtual world that’s monetized by a virtual currency that’s easily tradeable into other virtual currencies or goods). Furthermore, the platforms that creators and producers use will be less intrusive, less expensive, and more malleable than the monolithic platforms of today.

Ease of global collaboration

Cloud storage & editing, powerful front-end frameworks, and ever-increasing browser strength have made it possible to collaborate effectively with anyone, anywhere, and in practically any field. Figma and Airtable are just two examples of recent web2 companies that have accelerated the ease of collaboration with individuals halfway around the world. The pandemic has further accelerated this phenomena. With web3, we now have organizations that can be independently formed with no underlying platform dependence. These organizations, dubbed DAOs, can be both incentivized to work towards a common goal and govern themselves through tokenization. Anonymous, pseudonymous, or fully public individuals can have their work measured and verified through a publicly available blockchain.

Disintermediation and distribution.

Web3 will continue the trend of removing distance between producer and consumer. There is a continual disintermediation happening on the web. During web1, to release a successful music album you had to go artist → label → distributer → retailer → consumer. At each step there is profit loss and gatekeepers deciding whether you can continue onward to distribute. In web2 you got to go either 1-step closer (artist → label → platform → consumer) or 2-steps closer for those fully independent ( artist → platform → consumer). Web3 continues this disintermediation, as the platform merely becomes the underlying network or protocol the connection is made over (artist → consumer via protocol or network). There’s no longer gatekeepers or an expensive take-rate. There can still be curators to guide consumers (the difference being that a curator can make money independently of the artist’s margin). The end goal is that all service providers or product creators have the option to be connected directly with service seekers and product consumers.

Disintermediation is only possible because of the increasing ability to self-distribute. In the past, middle men at each step were essential to ensure wide distribution. Web2 gave us powerful tools of self-distribution through platforms like Amazon, Shopify, Google Ads, Social Media, SoundCloud, etc. In web3, we can maintain all the tools of web2, but now we introduce tokenized systems. By creating tokens that somehow represent your business or art in your chosen way, early fans and early users become incentivized to spread your art by holding those tokens. Those fans will now distribute that art for you through their own individual networks and tools.

Web3 Paradigm Shifts

Users become owners.

Employee stock options made many tech employees rich with the advent of web-first tech companies. However, for companies that rely on network effects - which is all social media, all sharing economy e.g. Uber, all marketplaces e.g. Amazon, all cloud tools, all games - the early users are equally as important. Without the early users, later users don’t join in, and a company never gains traction. Today, however, early users are not compensated for this essential contribution. In web3, through both fungible and non-fungible tokens, users & early evangelizers will win when a company wins too.

In common press about web3, what’s often talked about is that we’ll now be compensated for our data. This is true - unlike our data being owned by the platforms (Twitter, FB, etc.) it will travel with us and be owned by us. However, the more valuable and scarce asset that users give over to apps is their attention, and this will be the far greater reward to users. Power users and heavy users of games, cloud tools, and content platforms, will eventually either be incentivized by the app or move on to companies that do incentivize their valuable attention.

Any agreement becomes possible.

At each era of the web, we can code increasingly powerful experiences (i.e. code becomes more abstracted from the binary 0s and 1s that the computer actually runs). When web2 rolled around, internet connections were fast enough and devices strong enough to have rich streaming & content experiences. In web3, the game-changing abstraction is smart contracts. Smart contracts essentially allow any agreement between individuals, groups, protocols, or mix of the bunch. Relying on the legal system to enforce billions of agreements small and large on the web is neither desirable nor realistic. A smart contract’s ability to allow for agreements between two untrusted individuals without burdening the legal system creates a major shift in a human’s ability to coordinate behavior and form agreements between groups. In web3, code enforces the agreements and the blockchain infrastructure protects against manipulation of this code. Smart contracts are natively digital, meaning they can be combined and stacked with other contracts to create powerful systems and infrastructures. The implications of this are not yet fully realized, but one hint to the power of smart contracts is the emergence of decentralized finance, which has disrupted a giant sector in a very short period of time. Smart contracts can now be embedded in all the software and hardware we use - any object can be embedded with operating rules, sharing terms, & financial agreements between parties. Combine this with the ability to interface with any other contract on the network, and the creative, collaborative, and productive uses of these contracts become limitless.

Everything can be a financial instrument.

People often ask why not just use fiat currency through PayPal or Stripe - what’s the functional point of an open-source digitally native currency like Ethereum? The answer is that you can program it, build on top of it, and integrate it with anything digital - whether a smart hardware device or a software application. Even everyday items like your chat groups, gifs, or your writing journal can be made into a financial instrument. That universe becomes bigger when imagine digitally native assets and services that have not even been invented yet. Any individual can perform this integration, not just institutions. Usually when people think of financial instruments, we think of ownership, of buying and selling. But these aren’t the only functions of financialization - we can integrate all financial functions including borrowing, lending, insurance, and merging. Postscript: Why did I write this?

There’s something odd about writing articles that predict the future. If the writer is correct, the future is going to happen anyway, so what’s the point of writing an article about it now? What’s the point of another article hyping up a future that is certain?

Because web3 is so widely misunderstood, the future is uncertain. The economic and productive value that web3 can bring is deeply threatened by governments and regulators around the world. This is somewhat expected from authoritarian governments that will naturally crack down on web3 because of what it entails - shared equity and decision making, mass participation and organization - as retaining centralized power is essential to their literal survival. This has already become apparent in China. What’s essential is that major democracies, especially the world’s wealthiest USA and the world’s biggest India, foster the web3 experiment. It’s essential that we let things develop before overzealously legislating in the name of protection. Unfriendly governments could have firewalled the web1 internet and set progress back a decade because it was now easier for criminals to communicate and spread criminal information. Undoing legislation and regulatory burdens is much harder than waiting to pass them in the first place. Web3 built on crypto has the possibility to be the major boon for wealth inequality (see paradigm shifts listed above), an issue all sides of the political spectrum claim to want to solve. Democratic governments: let’s let web3 grow, develop, and make mistakes. We’re still so early.

North Korea Boasts Of Testing Missiles That Can Strike US Mainland

Days after North Korea's Kim Jong Un was featured in the country's latest propaganda video on a white horse prancing around in a forest and on a beach, he's issued a new threat, saying advanced missile technology possessed by Pyongyang will "shake the world."

The statement was issued Tuesday through the DPRK's Foreign Ministry. It said according to Reuters: "In today's world where many countries waste time dealing with the United States with submission and blind obedience, there’s only our country on this planet that can shake the world by firing a missile with the U.S. mainland in its range."

Effectively, Pyongyang says it has the capability of launching a long-range missile to strike the US mainland. "There are more than 200 countries in the world, but only a few have hydrogen bombs, intercontinental ballistic missiles, and hypersonic missiles," the statement continued.

The specific missile in question is believed to be the Hwasong-15, unveiled as under development starting in 2017, though it's thought to not have been tested yet. The Hwasong-15 is widely acknowledged as the north's longest-range intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

However, there's also widespread speculation that North Korea could be greatly advancing its hypersonic glide vehicle capabilities, after the Pentagon was reportedly caught off guard by alleged successful tests in the late summer of last year, though this is uncertain.

Amid stalled engagement with either the US or South Korea on nuclear talks, and a near compete lack of communication between Washington and Pyongyang since the rare, in-person summits with Kim during the Trump administration, North Korea started the year by flexing its missile capabilities.

In January alone it launched no less than seven missiles during a series of tests. The tests purportedly included another hypersonic glide projectile, as well as the intermediate-range ballistic missile Hwasong-12.

Researchers set a new record for the amount of energy released in a nuclear fusion reaction

Oxford-based scientists announced on Wednesday that they have hit a “major milestone” in the quest to make nuclear fusion a viable and low-carbon energy source.

The researchers at the Joint European Torus (JET) managed to set a new record for the amount of energy produced in a sustained fusion reaction, generating the equivalent of around 14kg of TNT, double the previous record set in 1997.

The “huge step” comes after two decades of tests and research at the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy, marking progress in the mission of harnessing the power of the stars.

“These landmark results have taken us a huge step closer to conquering one of the biggest scientific and engineering challenges of them all,” Professor Ian Chapman, the chief executive of the UK Atomic Energy Authority, said.

Addressing the potential this new source of energy could have, Chapman added that “it’s clear we must make significant changes to address the effects of climate change, and fusion offers so much potential.”

US makes EU gas pledge

The doughnut-shaped JET contains highly ionised gases which are heated to a temperature ten times hotter than the center of the sun, allowing atomic nuclei to fuse together and release energy.

While the researchers only created a five-second burst of fusion, Tony Donne, EUROfusion programme manager, stated that “If we can maintain fusion for five seconds, we can do it for five minutes and then five hours as we scale up our operations in future machines” – which is what would be needed for a power plant.

The information will help shape a large fusion project that is being constructed in the south of France, with the Iter facility set to start burning deuterium-tritium fuel in 2035. If that site works effectively, the next step would be to build a demonstration power plant in Europe which could be linked to the electricity grid.

Mystery lingers over shaking, loud booms reported in N.J.

Officials have been unable to confirm the source of the mysterious booms and vibrations that were reported by many people across southern and central New Jersey Tuesday afternoon.

No earthquakes were detected in or near the Garden State, no thunderstorms were in the area, and nearby military bases say they had no planes flying at supersonic speeds when the booms were heard.

Joint Base McGuire Dix Lakehurst was scheduled to conduct weapons tests at its base in Burlington County Tuesday, according to the agency’s Facebook page. However, the base’s public affairs office has not yet responded to questions about whether the testing may have caused the widespread booms and shaking that was reported from Mercer and Middlesex counties down to Salem and Cape May.

A “noise calendar” on the base’s Facebook page indicates the Rotary Wing Aerial Gunnery unit was scheduled to conduct tests that may include .50-caliber weapons, rocket fire or rotary cannons Tuesday, and those could create “moderate noise.”

But the calendar doesn’t indicate the times of the testing.

Update (2:10 p.m. Wednesday): A spokeswoman for Joint Base McGuire said she checked with a base coordinator “and he did not see anything on the training schedule that would generate (a) loud booming noise” Tuesday afternoon. She noted that the training dates listed on the Facebook calendar are general projections and aren’t set in stone.

Bob Saget‘s family has revealed the cause of the Full House star’s sudden death at the age of 65 on January 9. They said in a statement one month after his passing that the comedian unknowingly suffered a head trauma that led to him dying in his sleep.

“In the weeks since Bob’s passing, we have been overwhelmed with the incredible outpouring of love from Bob’s fans, which has been a great comfort to us and for which we are eternally grateful,” the family said on Wednesday, Feb. 9. “Now that we have the final conclusions from the authorities’ investigation, we felt it only proper that the fans hear those conclusions directly from us.”

Bob’s body was found in his hotel bed by a member of the Ritz-Carlton’s security team after his family became concerned when he failed to check out at his scheduled time and they had been unable to reach the comedian. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The funnyman was in the middle of a standup comedy tour at the time of his death, having the time of his life working on new material for an upcoming special. In his final Instagram post shared in the early morning hours of the day he died, it showed a selfie of Bob on stage after the show with a satisfied smile on his face and a stool with a guitar atop behind him.

In the caption Bob wrote, “Okay, I loved tonight’s show in Jacksonville. Really nice audience. Lots of positivity. Happened last night in Orlando last night at the Hard Rock Live too. The completely unnecessary Covid-lockdown restrictions have become normalized to the point that the Department of Homeland Security considers the removal of such restrictions as a national security threat. Joe Rogan won't be taking his immensely popular (if controversial) podcast to Rumble, the conservative-leaning video-streaming service, whose CEO just offered him $100 million to make the switch from Spotify.

Rogan made the remarks in the form of a joke during a surprise stand-up set in Austin, Texas, his adopted home, on Tuesday. Rogan performed his set then stuck around for a Q&A session with the audience afterward.

When asked about moving to Rumble, Rogan said "no", before elaborating.

"Spotify has hung in with me, inexplicably," Rogan added. "Let’s see what happens."

Rogan's comments come one day after Rumble CEO Chris Pavlovski offered Rogan "100 million reasons" to switch over to his platform. z

Spotify paid Rogan north of $100 million in 2020 to take his podcast - the most popular podcast in the US - exclusively to Spotify. But it's important to remember that Rogan has been hosting his show for longer than Spotify has existed as a company. It's also worth noting that Spotify sees Rogan's show as a critical revenue-driving asset, unlike the music of Neil Young, which only drains the company's coffers.

Since last Friday, Spotify has pulled more than 70 episodes of Rogan's program from its app, bringing the total number of episodes removed to 113. CEO Daniel Ek claimed in an internal memo that the episodes were removed with Rogan's consent.

Rogan has been facing an evolving controversy over the past few weeks that first focused on his role in spreading "COVID misinformation", before metastasizing to focus on Rogan's "language on race," as Grammy-winning soul musician India Arie put it. A viral video of Rogan saying "the n-word" elicited another frank apology from Rogan, who said he has changed his views on saying the word, and that he hasn't uttered it at all in "years".

During his set, Rogan joked about the hypocrisy of iPhone users being angry with him for using 'the n-word', given the conditions under which the iPhone is made.

He also mocked the notion that people take health advice from him and his show.

The commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service in London announced on Thursday that she would step down, under pressure from the mayor over reports of bullying, misogyny and racism on the force.

In a statement, the commissioner, Cressida Dick, made clear that she had lost the support of London’s mayor, Sadiq Khan, less than two weeks after a report from England’s official police watchdog described London police officers routinely making jokes about rape and exchanging racist messages.

Ms. Dick’s leadership had also come under intense scrutiny after the kidnapping, rape and murder of Sarah Everard, a 33-year-old London woman, by a Metropolitan Police Service officer in March 2021. The killing fueled broader concerns about misogyny within policing, and violence against women and girls.

“It is with huge sadness that following contact with the mayor of London today, it is clear that the mayor no longer has sufficient confidence in my leadership to continue,” Ms. Dick said in her statement on Thursday. “He has left me no choice but to step aside as commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service.”

At Mr. Khan’s request, Ms. Dick, 61, said she had agreed to stay on for a “short period” while the service transitioned to a new commissioner.

Mr. Khan said on Thursday that he had made clear to Ms. Dick last week “the scale of the change I believe is urgently required to rebuild the trust and confidence of Londoners in the Met and to root out the racism, sexism, homophobia, bullying, discrimination and misogyny that still exists.”

“I am not satisfied with the commissioner’s response,” he said in a statement.

“On being informed of this, Dame Cressida Dick has said she will be standing aside,” Mr. Khan continued. “It’s clear that the only way to start to deliver the scale of the change required is to have new leadership right at the top of the Metropolitan Police.”

A onetime beat cop in the city’s West End, Ms. Dick became the first woman to lead Scotland Yard in its 188-year history when she was appointed in 2017.

A graduate of Oxford and Cambridge, she led the police force through a tumultuous period that included a terrorist attack on London Bridge and near Borough Market that killed eight people in 2017, a devastating fire that year in Grenfell Tower, a high-rise residential building, that killed 72 people and, more recently, large-scale protests over law enforcement practices.

“I’m incredibly proud of my team and all they have achieved,” Ms. Dick said. “Since Day 1, tackling violence in all its forms has been my No. 1 priority.”

But she added: “The murder of Sarah Everard and many other awful cases recently have, I know, damaged confidence in this fantastic police service. There is much to do — and I know that the Met has turned its full attention to rebuilding public trust and confidence.”

After the police watchdog report was issued, the police service said that the actions detailed within it did “not represent the values” of the force. But Mr. Khan told the BBC this week that he wanted Ms. Dick “to win back the trust and confidence that’s been both knocked and shattered as a consequence of these cases.”

On Thursday, Mr. Khan thanked Ms. Dick for her “40 years of dedicated public service,” and her work in reducing violent crime. He said he would work with Priti Patel, the British home secretary, on the appointment of a new commissioner.

In a statement, Ms. Patel thanked Ms. Dick for her devotion to public service and said that, as the first female police commissioner, Ms. Dick “exemplified the increasingly diverse nature of our police.”

“She would be the first to say she has held the role during challenging times; yet for nearly five years she has undertaken her duties with a steadfast dedication to protecting our capital city and its people — including during the unprecedented period of the pandemic,” Ms. Patel said.

POLICE rushed to the scene after reports circulated of a military plane crash.

Reports arose around 11am local time that a vessel had crashed in Buckeye, Arizona.

A military plane from Luke Air Force Base has reportedly crashed

The Buckeye Police Department confirmed to local outlets that they were responding to an incident involving an aircraft from Luke Air Force Base.

The base told KOLD13 that it was working on an incident, but it wasn't specified what sort of aircraft was involved.

It is currently unclear how many people were on board the aircraft.

An official told Fox10 that the pilot had ejected before the vessel crashed and is OK.

A five-mile temporary flight path is currently in effect around the site for the next 24 hours.
