hikikomori life can be very stale due to the development of a deep-seated daily routine and years can pass until you realize doing something differently could have helped you avoid a lot of discomfort and troubles.

i would like us to share some of these realizations we have made so far that significantly improved our quality of life.

as a hikikomori who lives alone is a small apartment my biggest quality of life change was when i picked up cooking. i encourage every hikki who lives alone to pick up cooking because it makes life so much easier and its the perfect hobby for people who have enough time to deal with the constraints that come with it.

baking was easily the biggest game changer for me, so i recommend to get an oven or toaster oven first. then buy flour, instant yeast, sugar and salt in bulk. These ingredients take up little to no space, have nearly unlimited shelf life and are cheap as hell.

making bread is actually really easy if you just do the most basic one. you can also make pizza, noodles, tortillas, muffins, cookies and pancakes with those ingredients (you dont really need egg or milk and you can use any oil instead of butter)

next up is soup. fresh bread and hot soup go great together. tomato soup is one of my favorites and really easy to make too. all you need is bouillon stock cubes, tomato paste, garlic powder, olive oil and dried basil. you can add beans for even more calories.

its a huge step up from microwave meals and instant ramen, will save you money and is undoubtly more healthy. in my opinion its the most fun and useful survival skill a hikki can learn and being able to eat fresh pizza at any time for little money is honestly the absolutely greatest thing ever.

sleeping on the carpeted floor is way more comfortable than sleeping on an old mattress.

variety. i switch between different entertainment types to keep the boredom away.

Buy an e-reader, and start a reading habit. It'll keep help keep you from losing your ability to concentrate and to think. Also, there are de-drm tools on github so you can put Overdrive and Amazon ebooks on your ereader.

i agree that a worn out matress does more harm than good, but if you sleep on your side you might get aches sleeping on the carpet floor, if you do i recommend putting some sort of cushion under your hip area (pic related is what i use)

speaking of pillows, my pillows tend to wear out too quickly so i gave up on them and use bundled bedlinen instead now. i never liked soft pillows and you can shape the linen bundle to perfectly fit your needs, so that change was quite a step up for me in sleeping comfort.

I dont want to be "that guy" but excersize.

Excersize helps me channelthe extra "nerves" and energy that I get from time to time. It clears my mind and helps me sleep better. If I were to reccomend one excersize it would be squats. Squats really get the blood flowing and is a great way to get a lot of physical activity without making a lot of noise. When starting out, I would get up from my bed or desk and do a set of ten squats. That would do the trick. After some time, you may want to increase the number to 20 or 30, or add weight. Right now I am doing sets of 30, using my chair as weight. I dont really have anything denser than my chair on hand, so I cant really progress to anything heavier without buying special equipment. I reccomend doing 2 to 3 sets of whatever you are comfortable with. The extra sets are much harder to do than the first.

Like with anything you do with your body, proper form is key. Like with fapping, bad form (death grip) could lead to unwanted side effects. Good form for squatting involves arching your spine backwards (stick chest out) and bending your knees no more than 90 degrees. Give it a try, just a quick set of 10 squats is a great start to building leg strength. Having the extra power makes a lot of daily tasks much easier to do. Right now I do push ups and leg lifts in addition to squats. A lot of things like stairs and lifting heavy items is much easier for me now and I rarely encounter much difficulty with stuff of that nature now.

Who knows, excersize may become your stimulus of choice and youll soon find yourself going full /fit/tard

ebooks are great. I was fortunate enough to come across an android tablet so I can download books from library genesis or torrent sites and read them on the same device.

First choice is always de-drm'ed Amazon/Overdrive epubs, second choice is Mobilism. Next is the #bookz channel in undernet IRC. Fourth choice is libgen, but they have a lot of badly-formatted books with blurry downscaled images and missing table of contents, so you have to fix them yourself in Calibre to make them readable.

i bought both a fire tablet and a kindle and i must say fire is absolute garbage, unless you can root it and put custom android on it (afaik it still hasnt been cracked) its absolutely disgusting. the kindle on the other hand is pretty good at what is was designed for.

i remember some sort of meta-site with a minecraft reference that linked to a lot of different book download sites (including libgen), any chance you know that site? also where do i get those de-drm'ed amazon/overdrive epubs from, torrent sites?

I dont want to be "that guy" but its spelled exercise.

i am by no means a grammar nazi and frequently mispell words too, but this one is really grave and you repeat it several times over, it hurts to read. so please dont forget to exercise your grammar too once in a while.

anyway, on topic, im really jealous of people like you that enjoy physical activity, im not sure if i was just born lazy or its the fault of my parents for never encouraging me to do any kind of sport in my childhood. due to my hikki lifestyle both my stamina and strenght have reached absolute zero so it feels like absolutely impossible to do any kind of meaningful exercising. im at this point where im too weak to twist open jars and completely out of breath by simply bringing out the trash (and im only on the third floor)

if anyone has some useful tips on how to reverse my condition, im listening

No no, you de-drm them yourself with the apprenticeharper dedrm_tools from github. You'll need to read the project docs to set it up. Mobilism has some pure pre-dedrm'ed books too; those are the ones that say "version: retail" in the post. If you don't want to bother with doing it yourself Mobilism is the next best thing. Even the ones not marked retail are usually good.

I don't know anything about the Minecraft site though.

i see, thanks for explaining it

unrelated, how are other hikkis dealing with growing hair? i got pic related recently which are supposed to be the best commercial haircutter and shaving savety razor (i had cheap ones before which kinda sucked) and the difference is very noticeable, especially the savety razor shaves so much better than those plastic disposable razors (especially if your beard has grown longer) and it saves you a lot of money and space since a lifetime supply of blades for it easily fits into a big mac burger box, definitely a big improvment

Recently I've just been letting mine grow. I got a similar safety razor too, it's really great for saving money. Once I discovered safety razors it was just shocking how companies can get away with selling cartridge-types for such stupid high prices.

i know it should be obvious but i only recently realized that the lack of certain nutrients might be responsible for a lot of my hikki related health problems that keep getting worse so i ordered b12 and d3 supplements from amazon today. even dr.greger from nutritionfacts.org supplements both of these and according to recent studies like 40% of all american people should too unless you eat a lot of fortified foods (someone please produce vitamin enriched ramen for hikikomori already)

Nutrient deficiencies are definitely a major factor. Industrial farming has destroyed soil fertility and resulted in the nutrient density of foods being reduced anywhere from 15-65%. Vitamin C, magnesium and vitamin D are probably the most important ones you should be supplementing if you're deficient. Though for vitamin D you can just stand outside in the sun for 15 minutes or so.

The best thing to do is probably learn how to cook and make healthy meals with whole food ingredients. It's cheaper than subsisting on packaged foods and far more healthy.

If noise from outside is an issue, then I'd highly recommend investing in a white noise machine. Personally, I've found such a device to be absolutely invaluable to my sanity. Noise still gets through to some extent which can, at times, still greatly annoy me, even with the benefit of white noise, but it's better than nothing and, more often than not, helps to drown out the occasional racket my parents make from outside my door/room. I use a dedicated machine I bought online, which comes with multiple tones & variations to choose from, but you could also use a fan (not very practical in winter, though), or some app via a phone, if you happen to have one. Which I don't have, since I don't go anywhere and have no one to call, and anything else I just use my computer for. I guess you could also use your computer to play white noise, but a separate dedicated machine you can move around is, in my opinion, more convenient.

As an aside, I really wish I could soundproof my room further, but I'm just not sure how to go about it. I have a heavy curtain that hangs in front my door that I can pull across, but the sound dampening is minimal at best. I also have an attached door sweep, but, again, it doesn't do much. I'd need a way thicker door and a tighter seal around the frame to make any real difference. I'd need my parent's involvement to replace it though, and I just don't have the energy to make the necessary fuss.

If light from outside peeking through your curtains is an issue, try finding some objects to help lean up against the curtains to tamp down the edges. I have a shoji screen and a picture frame keeping both sides of my curtains down on the main window and it, mostly, keeps the light to a minimum. On my side window I just used a combination of tape, staples & bull clips to keep the light out and the curtains flat against the wall. If light from the top is an issue, try stuffing a blanket or towel up there in such a way to keep the light from bleeding through. It's not pretty, but, in my case, it works. I actually swapped out the blanket for a long piece of cardboard that I was able to throw up there and it, more or less, accomplishes the same thing. At least with the cardboard, you can still open up the curtains at night, assuming you want to crack a window for a bit. If the cardboard falls off or is bending up, try taping it down to the curtain bar.

In my case, I could probably do with taking some Vitamin D supplements (I have a bottle of them on the coffee table next to my pull out bed, actually), but I can never remember to take them. I really should though, since I know it's important and could very well improve my mood/overall health. Taking pro-biotics everyday did wonders for improving my digestion.

Exercise wise, getting a workout mat & a basic set of kettlebells can be a good starting point. Every few days, I do 6 sets of 10 kettlebell swings with a 36 pound bell, 10 Turkish get-ups, one for each side, with a 15 pound bell, 3 sets of 10 sit ups, 3 sets of 10 rear leg raises, one for each leg, 3 sets of 10 bicep curls, one for each side, with a 15 pound bell, and finally 3 sets of 10 goblet squats with that same 15 pound bell. It's not much, obviously, but it's something. Even if it's a futile gesture in the end, it helps to break up the days. I'd like to exercise more intensely, but I'm trying not to push it for now.

I use a Wahl Peanut for shaving, which I find to be very effective & quick, and a sonicare toothbrush which, quite literally, makes me feel like I just came back from the dentist whenever I use it. Chewing Xylitol gum after every meal can also help a good deal in maintaining oral health, assuming you have issues there. Personally, I just like chewing gum and, in a small way, it's saved from me from having to suffer any problems with my gums/teeth. I also happen to have long hair, which I'd strongly advise against, since it's a total fucking hassle with very little benefit, especially given the fact that I never go anywhere. If it weren't for me looking like an idiot with short hair, along with my mother helping me brush/dry it, then I would've shaved it all off long ago.

Anyway, I'll post more if I can think of anything else (not likely, though). It's pretty depressing that I've lived like this for 12 years now, but have so little to offer as far as interesting tips or added conveniences are concerned. You'd think I'd have something to show for it experience-wise, but nope. Totally useless.

>>7264

>The best thing to do is probably learn how to cook and make healthy meals with whole food ingredients.

My Mother does this for me and, as a result, I eat quite well. For over a year now, I've only eaten her cooking. No fast food, junk food, or otherwise processed food at all. Just lots of vegetables, rice, lean meats and other similar things, all whipped up at home. I don't know how to cook for shit and have no desire to learn, so I'd certainly be screwed without her. Which, itself, could be said about many other things as well. Irregardless, I'm grateful for the effort she makes each day to feed me, even though I usually eat very little anyway (1-2 meals a day). Whole reason she started cooking for me in the first place was because she thought I was going to starve to death if she didn't, given how little I eat. To this day, she still thinks the same.

If you feel better from it, then it's worth it. And don't take the weak stuff, you'd have to take like 40 capsules per day to feel an effect. This is the brand I use
