Buying HUGE storage mediums is stupid, if you have that much data, wouldn't it be smarter to use multiple mediums in RAID? Putting too much faith into one device is just stupid. What do you think?

yes, but say you have a lot of data and only 6 sata ports. you would need to run raid AND have 8Tb drives.

Good point, but if one needs this much data, why do they not have a nas or something?

often times it is much much cheaper to use a used pc and turn it into a nas. Prebuilt nas units are very expensive.

I think buying bunch of 2 or 3 TB HDDs is usually smarter than buying one storage medium with capacity over 2-3TB . The reasons are cost, speed and safety. (if one of the drives fail, you still have other HDDs left) Also, preferably you would use at least one of the HDD just for backups and then use an external drive to create monthly backups.
