I was wondering how long a used Thinkpad would last as a daily driver. I'm a more worried about battery life than anything else. Moreover where do I find a cheap x220.

I had a T440 for almost a year now and it’s been great so far. Only problem is that the memory is low-powered and max is 8GB which really shows when you’re running too many applications, but other than that, it’s been fine.

Don't get me wrong thinkpads are good. they have limited backdoors and they are sturdy but heavy. they use the old style of implementing a metal framework encasing the motherboard which means the motherboard wont flex and break transistors

x220/x230 can with a mod, t420/w520 and t430/w530 needs less work than the X-series. xx40 series and up can directly through Lenovo.

Just got a new T420 in the mail a few days ago. I get like 2.5 hrs of battery life on the 6 cell that it came with, running Artix (arch sans systemd). I was thinking about buying a new 9 cell battery but I read other people (who are on windows) reporting like 3.5 hrs. Can someone confirm? If it's not like 6 hours I don't need it.

>if you're trying to browse the web it'll work fine for years, if you're trying to edit videos and shit not long
This is ironically the opposite of the truth.
Editing 1080p video will take the same, or perhaps slightly less computing power now as it did a few years ago.
Browsing the web used to be just fine on a Pentium 2 with 128MB RAM. Now many webpages will crash if you have less than a gig of RAM.

Why not get a T480/E485 and enjoy a 8th Gen™ Intel CPU/2nd Gen™ Ryzen and a clunk trackpad that feels like the T420 buttons all over the entire TrackPad.
It's quality is far better than any T430/T440 flop Lenovo pulled in the "Windows 8 era".

I have an E485 and a T60 for daily driver duty. My E485 running Manjaro is one of the best computers I have ever owned and I adore it. My T60 is what I use for writing. It’s like a typewriter for me. I make hot tea, fire up the T60, and just write in vim. It’s amazing.

Why is there so much thinkpad shilling on the boards? Seriously? Why not an Acer, or even a Lenovo G-series with a Linux distro? Or even a Toshiba or an HP with a Linux distro? Why so much emphasis on Thinkpads? Because of the little mouse button in the middle of the keyboard? Is this just a fashy meme?
