So FurCon 2019 is coming to my area again and this time I have the time and shekels.

I've always been somewhat intimidated in partaking in such degeneracy but willing to go with an open mind this time around.

What should I realistically expect? Are the any fun?

This will probably be my first furry con.

I've never been to a real big con, but the one I went to in my state was pretty neat. Lots of cool suits, artists trying to sell their shit. It's probably a lot of fun with friends - i don't have any so I had just gone alone, and even then I had some fun. Go to some of the panels if they interest you, generally get out of your comfort zone, try to meet some people and make pals, idk.

I had a good time, and I didn't even get any sleep before it.

You'll probably have a bang-up time! Furcons can be a lot of fun. You won't see much "degeneracy," there's no random sex in the hallways or anything. I've been attending fan cons, including furry cons, for about 18 years, I've been to at least two per year (at least one of them furry) and I've seen nudity five times and sex twice, all in closed-door room parties. I've encountered terribly smelly people about five times (in a few of those, I know con staff told them to go clean up), seen a diaper in public once (staff immediately popped in to demand they go cover up, and they did), and sights of the "spandex is a privilege, not a right" variety many, many, many times (but ALL at the San Diego Comic Con). You'll find furries are far more sociable than the internet leads you to believe.

I used to go to FC every year, and I enjoyed it.

LOL. Serious answer: yeah, and as long as you're not an extreme introvert and you're not uncomfortable in crowds, you'll have fun. There are usually people chatting in the lobby areas, around the pool (if it's indoors or the weather is warm), wherever people smoke, and in the hallways around the dealers' area and near the event rooms, which is where most cons have a dance (think rave) late at night. A lot of con-goers are social, and friendly.

Some cons have started using an indicator system. If they do this, it's usually arranged at con registration. It uses colored plastic clothespins or clips, which people attach to their badge lanyard or somewhere on their clothing. A green or blue clip signifies "yes, come start a conversation with me." Yellow means "if I want to talk, I'll start the conversation." Orange or red is "I'm not interested in conversation," whether they're introverted or just not feeling like it. Some people will take a 2nd clip of yellow or red, to put on when they're headed somewhere and don't want random people trying to pull them into conversations.

Yes, don't go to a con for the sole purpose of getting laid. Not because it can't happen; you absolutely can get sex at a furcon. I say don't, because you may look desperate and, if it doesn't happen, you'll feel like the con sucked, when in reality it only sucked because your single, focused goal didn't get met.

Go to a con with open expectations about what you'll find. You'll see that most furries are absolutely not as shallow, introverted, self-absorbed and/or single-minded as you may have believed-- and they're definitely not mostly unwashed and/or sex-crazed, either. They don't hump in the hallways. You'll find lots of people who want to talk, in groups, about all sorts of things. People who like to party and people who don't. People who like to game and people who don't. Etc. etc. etc. But your best bet is to go in open-minded, relax, get out of your comfort zone, and open up to whatever happens. The same goes for conventions of just about any kind: the negatives people expect are, if at all, only in tiny amounts, and there are a lot of positives.

>to everyone outside, furry looks very childish or creepy

I've found that stereotype to be less true that one would think. Most of what negativity is out there is from people who've caught fleeting glimpses on the internet of others saying that furries are disgusting perverts. They know nothing about the fandom, but have read in very brief passing that they're weirdos.

Usually, one need not even bring it up. But to your parents-- assuming they're relatively easy-going people-- all you really have to say is that you're going to a fan convention. You could call it a comic con, or sci-fi/fantasy.

That you, DarkShadowFox, still on your "the fandom is all pedos and pedo-supporters" crap?

>>96937

Yep, though most cons aren't really geared toward families. Even so, it's a rule at just about any furcon that adult material must be covered and proper clothing must be worn in public spaces (which includes badge-only areas). Even at the infamously babyfur-friendly RainFurrest, anyone wearing little enough clothing to show diapers or underwear-- and a few who went out in BDSM gear-- were IMMEDIATELY told by con staff to go cover up or GTFO. I've seen parents with kids at cons, but only rarely, never at RF, but occasionally at Further Confusion. Actually, the best costume I ever saw at a furcon (at FC) was worn by a kid-- who had a parent nearby at all times.

>>97004

Sure, there are horny people at cons. But like I said earlier, don't go to a con with one and only one goal, because if for some reason that goal isn't met, you'll end up feeling like the whole con was bad, when it really wasn't. Oh, and always wrap your weenie. Not because there are people trying to spread STDs-- Sibe is the only actual bug-sharer running around, and I don't know of any cons which let him attend, though he sometimes ghosts-- but just because it's generally a good plan.

Well, it's true. They're not designed for families, but parents and kids come occasionally, so it's proper to be prepared. But I don't think the staff really have to keep X-rated stuff out of public areas; a few people are stupid and will try, but most furries really don't do that as a rule anyway.

I know this might have already passed but I'll just drop a few nuggets

1)

Realistically it depends on you. Mostly unless you are an introverted, shy and timid individual that cannot stand crowds. Do not go to one ever. Even small cons such as Further Confusion can be daunting in that sense.

Other than that, really they primarily have something for everyone. Whether you wanna just waste time playing Videogame in the presence of others or dance the night away with others. Really most people are just there to unwind and relax in the presence of people who "get them". They are no different than you in most cases and most of them just use it as a means to socialize and meet people from online or to make new acquaintances. You'll be surprised how easy it is to make friends and hang out with people when doing an activity whether its dancing, video-gaming, or even being at a panel.

Also friends aren't required but they can make the whole adventure interesting when you have someone to talk to constantly and or hang out and do activities though I should stress on the end it should be someone you correlate well with. As far as going solo, just note that there will be times you'll find yourself walking around a lot from place to place but again if there is stuff there that interest you like panels, psuedo internet famous furries (artists/youtubers/writers/fursuiters/etc) or events (gaming/dances/etc) then it won't be too bad on ya. Just again make sure as a solo individual, that it something that you can feel entertained going to and not feeling like you are wasting $70 or more USD to just to get past the con only areas.

Cause the alternative and this gonna sound really scummy is to basically ghost the con. since most of the time at all these furry cons. The only so called "Gated" areas are usually the "Dance", the Trading Room (Dealers Den) and Artist Alley and Panels. Other than that most of the con takes place within the lobby of either the hotel or convention center and you can get around a sizable amount of these cons without a badge and still meet and hang out with people.

I love that, especially if I'm going out of state for a convention (which I will be for BLFC). A couple local furries told me that BLFC is a good con but I wanted a second opinion. Apparently it's one of the biggest furry conventions in the world but that's not always a good thing.

It's huge, there's lots of stuff to do (Go-Karts, Minigolf, bowling, driving range, gambling); the hotel and convention space is more or less nice. Dealer's den is nice and proper-sized with an adult section; there's a fair bit of hang-space as well. Last year they had a big light-brite board and whiteboard people could make art on, if that's your thing.

Downsides are the escalators/elevators which are almost always a fucking trainwreck, double-so if one breaks. Food can get a little bit expensive (either that or Round Table + McDonalds). They used to let us on the driving range for the entire weekend (or at least sat/sun during late hours) but now it's just down to Saturday.
