I've always had a cat as my fursona. Since I was maybe 15?
Thing is for the longest time I never got around to formalizing any design or making a ref. It was just a cat in my head for RP purposes.
I'd start designing something and then get side tracked drawing one for a friend every time.
On some occasions I put something together in a rush, but I was never happy with those.
It wasn't until recently that I finally finished something.
And by finished I mean a portrait sketch/lineart.
I really need to draw more.
And learn to render.

I was about 19 when I came up with my fursona, mostly because a furry ex-boyfriend from high school encouraged it, and I figured why the fuck not? Before that I'd fapped to furry porn for several years but never really got that into the whole "community" deal. Never needed or wanted a fursona before then.
I had an idea for a raccoon/fox hybrid pretty quickly. This was mostly because I looked up some traits and found my personality was more befitting a raccoon (or at least the stereotype) while my body type was more like a fox (and I prefer canine dicks anyway). Also a cub because shotacon.
It was just a concept in my head for a long time, without any sort of solid design or form. I had no real idea how to hybridize the colors or differing bodies, but I knew I didn't want to cheap out by slapping a raccoon tail on a fox and calling it done like everyone else who's ever had a fox/raccoon fursona. I wanted something that not only made some level of sense with the fur patterns, but was also unique and would stick out in a crowd, without resorting to neon colors or dragon wings or tribal tattoos or such nonsense. Eventually I put together a feral concept and just used that as a sort-of avatar for a while.
Years later, when /furry/ was made, someone posted a stupid crappy template thread, and I redesigned the feral concept into an anthro one. A while after that, I picked up a much better template, and after an unbelievable amount of edits to the form to make it the right colors and child-sized, I came up with a final version.
I intended to use it as a reference for commissions, but I'm just too stingy with my money to feel a pressing need to do so.

It's been quite an evolution. I started with a rat. A rat, based off artwork of a very vicious looking cunt, im not sure why I even wanted it, but I know I needed something to join the biggest guild on gaia. From a rat to a fox, fox to fox dragon, faggon to wagon, wagon to dragon, then dragon to bone dragon.
I went from slut to hoarding pack animal..to realizing that im not really made for more than a small group of friends and i'm one that only seems to hoard loss. That, and the undead are highly unrepresented, especially benevolent ones. No art to show for it though.
I'm considering a goat, my chinese zodiac was a Ram after all.

Regardless, bone-X presents plenty of opportunity to amuse myself by attaching myself to somebody and have them wear me like decor. I actually have two fursonas.
My main (and original) 'sona is a coydog. I've always liked coyotes, and my personality is kinda similar to a coyote's, so that's why I chose that. I chose a coydog, though, because I saw this one coydog IRL and thought he looked cool.
My secondary fursona is my anonymous, shitposting fursona. He's a ferret. When I'm shitposting, I tend to be a little bastard. Ferrets are little bastards. 'Nuff said.

I was 18. I had been following the fandom for a while but mostly used a dragon persona even though I never really spoke to anyone. Then someone I knew through an IRC chatroom and forum was offering to do Sonic sprite recolors. Since at the time being a furry was kind of a fad on the forum (things get slow when you're young and bored) I asked for a Tails recolor with some really freaking abysmal colors. I don't know if I have the original file anymore. Over the years the designs changed and became more special snowflake, but as I went off to college and got busier the design became less and less intricate until finally I settled on a generic grey fox. I haven't even commissioned any art of my final form. Really his only distinguishing feature is his frankly boring fashion sense. In a way my fursona became less colorful and autistic at the same rate that I did. Go figure.

I actually wrote a backstory for this mother fucker and it was so fucking stupid looking back on it. I think what was going on inside my head was I was desperate to roleplay with the character because I was discontent with my life and wanted to escape and so I made him into basically a kitsune from Japanese legend and shit. He even had an evil twin for a while but I shook that aspect of his character off really fast when I realized I was pushing all of my negative personality traits onto a separate character. God, no wonder my writefag stuff never took off.
>>3889
Grey fox is best fox but the reason I took it was that I wanted a fox who didn't look like half of the fursonas in the entire fandom without basically making him a tie-dye nightmare. I also learned on Wikipedia that grey foxes are native to my region and the place where I wanted to live at the time, and that they're socially monogamous and not total sluts like red foxes.

I own only one sona, I never really saw the point of having multiple characters for just one person.
I started off with the furry fandom on second life, my first pick was a black sergal with purple, yellow, and green hair. I tried to mix and match my favorite colors and put it on one sona. I don't know how but for a year and a half I was pretty content with it. I was too poor for art back then (I think I was around 13) thankfully so I don't really have any pictures of him. Oddly my first real "fursona" is the one I still have today. It's morphed a bit over time and I don't draw it much anymore, but it's still the same one. For instance it started out as gray but changed to a more orange/yellow color. If I recall right it was inspired by some photos of Sechuran Foxes, although it isn't of any species specifically. I also liked the raccoon "mask" a lot back then so that was part of it originally.
I was going to change to a different fursona at some point, but it never felt quite right. I tried to forcibly inject different animals that I thought looked cool into the new design, but I didn't really know what I was doing with personas at the time.
Come to think of it, technically the first persona I had was a gray cat that I used in some online drawing game thing. I never thought of it as "me" though, so I don't consider it a persona. I made it because everyone had their own character that they got recognized by and communicated through.

As for the "writing" bit, I believe it easily. The second I made years later, and was more of an experiment, taking parts from him I liked and parts from another character I had made and mixing them into one, to create a fox/horse hybrid. The hybrid was supposed to be male, but when I drew him as a her, it just looked better. I didn't want to give up the huge knotted horsecock so now the he is a she and the she is a herm. According to that list, I've been a deer, ferret, red panda, chow chow, bear, cat, saber tooth tiger, lion, cougar, mouse, and possum. Most of those lasted a few weeks or months. My longest one was the bear which lasted for two years. I think its pretty neat to look back and see how my taste evolved over time. I had a fursona in the beginning cause all the furries had one and i thought it would be awesome to live vicariously as a furry on the internet. But as i established one fursona i kept thinking about how cool it would be to have one of a different species so i changed it. And then i decided not to bother anymore because anything i pick is gonna get replaced eventually. The fact that most people switch them at least 3-4 times is proof of it. When you're given the power to be anything you want, you can't really settle on one thing...
▶ No.23173

I can empathize with that. I've been sticking with my fursona's overall design, but I keep changing his backstory around over the last five or so years to make his character different. This actually works without retcons because the first version of him went skipping through multiverses like a bored couch-potato skips through TV channels. So far, I've got a Prime version (dominant pompous kid that sorta enjoys killing and really enjoys sex), a Beta version (kind and sexually-innocent introvert kid that wants to be left alone), and a Spirit version (ancient animal spirit from the Earth that bonded with a human child from which it gained a physical avatar; and was mostly the result of attempting to self-insert into the Tolkien-verse).
There's several more I haven't fully fleshed out yet, that are just basic ideas. I use them differently like other people use different characters, with the common theme that all are essentially flavors of the same fursona.

When I used to hang out with furry artists that offered commissions for fursona references, I used to wonder about how people design outfits. In my case I went with a general rule of comfortable casual wear, but I've always been interested in furry fashion and I've always wanted to dress up my 'sona in fun outfits.
So my question to you is do you go the extra mile and design alternate outfits for your 'sona or do you just let that reside in the abstract?

I haven't gotten to that point yet, but I do plan to. I'll make sure the designs are appropriate as well, pants that compensate for the tail and all that.

Huh, so yea, I never had a sona for years, decided to make one relatively recently just for the shit of it and so I had a character to practice drawing and such.
I chose a goat because like, 80% of goats seem to be either edge lords or bara or something, not much in terms of "normal characters".
So just a regular ol' floppy eared goat.
Also goats are just alternative dogs.

Go to /fa/ on your chan of choice and see what's ""fashionable""
If it's for a specific era, watch media that has that sort of style or look you're looking for (sci-fi: GitS, blade runner, etc; ole style: any fantasy style game, LotR, etc)
I based mine off of outfits I normally wear because made for a realistic setting and style.
also i've got a very mild case of being severely lazy

Three months late to answer your question, but I try to commission artists that go the extra mile to make cool outfits for my sona. I find dressing up my cat more appealing than commissioning porn in all honesty.

That kind of stuff is honestly why I prefer more bestial looking bodies to humans-with-animal-heads.
It gives you way more opportunities to get creative with their outfits the less human-shaped their bodies are.

Oh fuck, I never realised why Petunia wore that.

Never made one because I'm an indecisive faggot. Whenever I begin brainstorming one I usually never get passed species and personality. If I do ever make it that far I begin questioning why I'm making one to begin with. I don't ERP, generally dislike most other furries, and am extremely frugal. Not gonna judge people who have sonas except for those who go hungry because of commissions but I never really saw a point to make one outside of wanting an avatar.

That's the easiest part, though. Species is whatever you like most, and personality is basically just YOURS. If it's not, it's not even a fursona, just an OC.

I could never decide what I wanted for my sona, until two separate artists drew a really generic cat idea I had as a siamese cat. So I've just been rolling with >>49809 for years, now. the whole thing was pretty neato. so even though I basically had two people pick a species for me, it felt right in the end due to that weird coincidence.

Don't have to do the whole thing in one go.
Just settle on a visual design that you like, and you can change anything that strikes you on a whim.
I was changing things about mine for years while I gradually started settling on stuff.
Now I might mess with his clothes a bit or maybe slightly alter his fur pattern once in a blue moon, but he's basically "done" and looks drastically different than he did originally.

You know, your fursona doesn't have to totally represent you.

My fursona is pretty much a 1:1 to myself, so I always dressed them in the outfits I wear the most or compliments the design well. Though after getting a ref sheet the artist took minor artistic lib and added a "tail buckle" on the jeans which actually makes sense and looks good too. Definitely makes much more sense than the usual tail slapped onto trousers with PS1 clipping I had going in for several years
I do have some trouble designing clothes for my other characters though, considering I don't have much experience with fashion ect

Strange choice. I almost want to critique you, but at the same time, it's interesting.
I give it a passing grade.
You ought to use the eyespots more, though, like in the bottom left bit.
