What's the history of this board? I was wondering about making a wikifur page for /fur/.

It was made at the same time as /furry/ as an SFW focused board. However, everyone moved here after the /furry/ BO Puppysky stopped moderating his board during the spam wave. /fur/ changed it's focus from being an SFW board to being an NSFW one.

Bui basically nuked /furry/ so everyone migrated here.

you forgot the fact that /fur/ had set up a massive, cool and sophisticated firewall with white-listing to keep the spam bots out of /fur/, and that's how it survived and thrived at the time.
also after people migrated to /fur/, deciding a mascot for the board was a big thing, but I'm too lazy to write about it I gotta go sleep
oh and also the birth of /trash/ on 4chan made many people on /fur/ migrate there

in retrospective it was a pretty stupid idea. the people who are into this shit went mostly to discord and the few that remain on imageboards didn't really need to be divided into 2 separate boards.
however the chemo bot was an incredible line of defense against the cancerous spam back in the day, eventually /furry/ stopped being moderated and everyone just gathered in /fur/. bell realized the divide was silly and removed the SFW restriction of the board.

I think /furry/ was dead before it got stopped being moderated from the spam. And its probably better when people go to Discords, considering how noone of value ends up there. All I see is cubfurs and weebs, which wouldn't bother me, if they weren't 12 themselves.

The /furry/ Discord server was terrible. Being there while everything was going to shit on the board made me almost feel bad for Puppysky though. He just kind of gave up

It's easy to blame the spam-posting that killed the board, but at that point /furry/ was barely limping along (as was most of 8chan save /v/ and /pol/ - but some would probably argue they were still too slow.) 8chan was hit by two or three extended DDoS periods at that point, and as a frequent user it felt like every other week /furry/ or 8chan was unusable. The people who fled did so more out of practicality than greener pastures - if you've ever so much as looked at /trash/ you would know even our dead boards have higher quality discussions, as /trash/ is just a de-facto porn dump.

I keep getting invited to furry-Discords, but I don't dare going there. What I expect is casual RL pedophilia, while the community is mostly underage. Plus there won't be any art, only people sharing dick pics and fursuits. I don't want that crap.
I've even been in "normal" groups which is just a pile of pathetic weebs talking about little girls like if it wasn't awkward, while in moderated Discords noone dares to speak.
Discord is pretty much just gathering idiots who are even too socially awkward for a public board.

Even the threads that aren't about porn get loaded up with it anyway.
I go there because threads for some webcomics I read wound up moving there, and now they're just fanart/porn dumps occasionally broken up by a few hours of talk over each update.
Even non /trash/ threads that get sent there for whatever reason immediately turn into porn dumps of whatever the thread was about.

I remember it being a SFW furry board at some point, but I wasn't running it then. It was claimed and wiped by someone who turned it into a board about trapping and skinning animals (place your bets on that being a troll). I claimed the board after them.
I never designed the board to focus specifically on SFW, but in a sense for it to not be focused on porn. "Discussion, then porn" as it's said in one of our banners. Today I think it's better articulated as favoring expression over consumption. And escaping the "furry == fetish" mentality of course.

I appreciate that people think fondly of it! Does anyone remember the oekaki images they made to help get into the whitelist?
To recap a little of how it worked, the script would scan the Recent Posts page (If you didn't know that exists, unfortunately only mods can see it) and delete any post with an IP (hashes of your IP, don't worry) that wasn't on the whitelist, but it wouldn't touch any posts made in a thread we designated. That thread would be the "umbrella" where anyone would post and ask to be put on the whitelist, that way we could see their IP. Of course that thread could be spammed, so at one point we had people make drawings to help indicate they were real people. It was a hectic time, but at moments kind of fun.

I had the distinct impression this board was a version of lulz.net with younger posters in their 20s, and a more 4chan-ish culture (though much of 8ch was that way and at first lulz reeked of 4chan). On lulz you had more in the 30-50 range. Ironically despite that these days the /fur/ board seems slightly less immature (if you think this is bad...). Some of those people had the brains of dinosaurs and the breed of old fur/zoophile that hangs around and on forums warped my view of growing old. Keep your brains healthy.
