It's not their conscripts, they just took a bunch of things and scrambled together. I believe the law on self defense says that you can get away with moderation. You'll go to the court, but not as a criminal. I think. Not familiar with American dynamics

If you're unarmed they have substantially less dirt on you for neutralizing poor old Tyrone, than if you defended yourself with a gun, knife, or whatever else.
In terms of filing paperwork, unarmed self defense will probably save you the most time in court.
Beside that, IIRC Krav Maga is just kicking people in the nuts and poking their eyes out, essentially the only things a scrawny Jew could do to defend itself. Ju Jitsu and Boxing should suffice in kicking the shit out of any potential assailants.

In regrads to martial arts, personally I suggest learning boxing first, as it is, BY FAR, the most important skill, then follow up with (Dutch-style) kickboxing, which is basically the same boxing with added kicks (largely borrowed from Karate), then move to either Muay Thai or Savate (du Rue) for the knees and elbows.
Any grappling will do, but in athletic competition freestyle wresting and any no-gi jujitsu variants seems particularly successful.
Of course, if you can find a place that teaches legitimate Sambo, I would go there immediately after pickup up boxing for couple months.

Any form of Krav Maga is generally a waste of time especially considered what the alternatives are such as kickboxing or really any other from of martial arts apart from karate and taekwondo

If you're thinking of carrying, just get a pocket pistol. They're easy to carry, no one will know you're carrying one, and they're cheap. I recommend the Ruger LCP II.

Heh. Guns are for pussies. My Master sensei Carl has taught me ninjitsu for a whole 2 months and I can confidently take on anybody with a gun. The problem with pocket guns is that mostly they are 380 which can be stopped by a leather jacket. That and they aren't meant to last, most of these pocket guns, if you run 1000 rounds through them, you might as well throw it out. I don't think you can be comfortable with a gun if you haven't sent at least 500 rounds through it.

This is my non-snarky answer.
There's not that much difference between 9mm and .380, especially given that most self-defense situations happen at close range (~6-7m) and end within 2-4 shots. 9mm has a little more penetration, that's about it. Penetration is also not something I want when firing in an environment where it is likely that people may be all around.

How likely are you to be firing into a crowd? I think most situations where firearm use would be needed is likely one on one, or many on one. Nogs aren't going to drag you out of a crowd unless you live in africa or the middle east.
I carry a glock subcompact 9mm. The 380 wasn't available at the time, but I still wouldn't have bought it. I'll take discomfort and power over a 380 pocket gun. I'll admit, I have always wanted a 22lr conversion for some plinking though. Damn near the cost of a used glock though.
