Hey there /ebola/, we're back.
Quick confession: the VN project was just too ambitious for a first project. So we've reformed the studio, and we're scaling back into a smaller project for now: Virus Pop! It'll be an eroge 'dating sim' game in the vein of Hunie Pop, complete with lewds. We're hoping to have an inexpensive release, but intend to provide you with a free demo as soon as it's ready. Once this sees sales, we'll consider picking up the VN project again, for anyone interested in something a bit meatier.

YouTube embed. Click thumbnail to play. Hmmm… not really a fan of HuniePop. It becomes repetitive and after the intros to characters, there's no substance, character development or even consideration toward the (static and non-developing) characters to it what so ever.
If something smaller than RPG-VN-strategy_game-crossover is wanted (yeah, you attempted something too big there), maybe something more like a kinetic novel. Obviously it would be difficult to get people to pay for the full version, unless it was written as something emotionally engaging and/or intellectually challenging. As a homage to Ebola-chan and her viral friends, a single path narrative story could even be preferential. It would require very little programming, but good literary and story telling skills. (Also, all the lines for side paths can be written to the main story, hence make it appear longer and more cohesive.)
A good example of a topic could be to portray the last Ebola epidemic from the beginning to it's end as a kinetic novel, in an alternative world setting, leading to Ebola-chan going to hiatus at the end. Should it be nakige or utsuge, I'm not sure (as long as it's not pure nukige).

The problem is that you have three conflicting goals in choosing game objectives: (1) Make lots of girls available. (2) Make them deep and show lots of detail. (3) Keep the mechanics simple and the pace up.
You can have any two, but not all three. In this case we're favoring (1) and (3) at the expense of (2). The depth still exists, but only as our background canon, which will mostly go unspoken in this game. There's just no time to deal with it. You would favor (2) and (3) at the expense of (1) and that's a valid design decision, but it doesn't meet the needs of what we see as our target niche.
We intend to make a game that is less repetitive and less grindy than HP, which is why many of its mechanics are being tossed overboard. The basic philosophy – promoting breadth over depth – still remains.

Some data to drop:
1. One mini-game has been written and is in the process of being converted to Unity (because I wrote it in qb64, I don't know C# to do Unity).
2. Cure-chan is your opponent.
3. One of the game mechanics is to call her "cowtits" and get her on tilt.
4. There are also Hypnotoads involved.
5. This started as a clone of the dice game Yacht, but it has mutated into something much more interesting, because both you and Cure-chan can cheat.
Have a guide graphic I am providing to our actual programmer. How much this resembles the end result is yet to be determined.

The problem of stereo sound being downmixed to mono has been remedied in both demos. This was due to an error in the qb64 libraries for handling stereo sound, but has been corrected by the developers – and the Cure-chan Yacht project is where the bug was first documented, leading to it being patched.
The files remain at the same locations as before, but if you grabbed them before, you may want to grab them again. Also the Cure-chan Yacht has moved to a config file setup, rather than asking you to input parameters on game start.

• Much larger scorecard
• Larger dice, which more clearly indicate when they are held
• "Cowtits" mechanic now superimposes a speech bubble with Cure-chan's opinion of the player.
• The girl "talks" to you.
• The turn summaries have been reduced to one line each to make room for the girl to talk to you.
• Hypnotoads are all displayed now, instead of "x2" or "x3" next to a single toad.
Black Box has also been improved. A much cleaner version of the Marburg sprite has been swapped in, and she speaks Russian at you (not all the time, don't worry). The help system is much, much improved and explains the game much more clearly than before.

I'll post some critique, and try not to be an asshole. Try to take it in stride. Also, this is just my one response so keep that in mind. Pandering is generally a bad idea, wait and see what other people have to say, then discuss it internally. People tend to not know what they want until they get it.
Bad shit
1. I don't appreciate the western character names. It takes away from who they are supposed to be too much. It'd be one thing if you met them as their nicknames, then later got properly introduced with their full virus name, but that's not what's happening here. If you do change this, there is a fine line between generic OELVN and 100% weeaboo. Try not to go full weeaboo.
2. The memes are fun, and when I started they were subtle enough that they made me smile. But the more farther in I got the more they made me cringe. I hope that some of those are only for the demo. Just cut back on some of the memes.
3. The script itself so far is fairly disappointing. The tour and meeting all the girls one by one in short bursts in particular. I'll try to help: remove the tour by making it a shorter quick tour with a focus on getting to know Ebola-chan and the world we are being introduced to. Some more interesting details than this is where we live and also we're having a team-based competition, maybe some lore, history, rumors, etc. Then space out new areas and characters as the story progresses, between scenes that are more plot-heavy or perhaps reliant on being in the right place at the right time (i.e. going to a certain location on a certain day or an automatic scene triggered at a specific time as part of a specific route). Give the player an IV drip of plot and lore so they don't get bored and eager to press the skip button or just close the game.
4. The UI, transitions, and text are fuck-ugly. They are placeholders, I hope.
5. The load times(?) are awful for such a simple game, every time there is a sprite change, bgm change, or transition.
4 & 5. I appreciate the work that went in, and I'm glad you are making progress, but I'm tempted to drop out of school just to team up with the programmer to make this thing better. If it's written in BASIC, I encourage the programmer to have a look at POnscripter in their spare time, as it's open source, cross platform, easy to write scripts for, and has decent enough documentation. Downloading free Onscripter-en games and reading their script files can also be good if the documented command isn't clear enough. It also has the benefit of being extremely easy to write translation (or fan game) patches for, or simply opening the original script file and making bug fixes long after the game developer has abandoned it. The simplicity makes it easier than renpy in my opinion. But this recommendation also depends on what other minigames you plan on adding, as the more complex the game, the greater the skill required to program it, no matter what language is used.
6. One of the music tracks in the demo just wasn't that good. Does Mal have any better tracks for this? It was pretty bland and unmemorable compared to other VN soundtracks. I'll have another go soon and see if there is a specific scene that has this track so you can identify it. Sorry for being so vague.

Good shit
The game is actually getting somewhere. I didn't have high hopes after the last iteration of Virus Shoujo failed. Virus Pop has a greater potential for a fun game anyway, since it has elements of dating sims and mini games, rather than being a plain visual novel.
The sprites are good, even though I liked the ones the ask-ebola-chan guy was working on. The script isn't all bad - not at all. The tour is just too long and drawn out and there are a little bit too many memes. The mini games are fun enough, which ones I've played so far.
And some final unrelated bad shit
Sorry to say, I don't think anyone is going to donate again after already being burned once, especially since this got showed up by Dread with that awesome Filosisters RPG. This may change as more progress is made though, showing that the project may actually get finished.
Alienating /pol/ users on your tumblr page is unlikely to garner any sympathy, considering they are essentially Ebola-chan's father. Just saying. /leftypol/ really isn't a large demographic on h8chan, and despite our spreading Ebola-chan's love to other websites, it didn't, ahem, fly so good. SJWs hate Ebola-chan regardless. Normalfriends don't care about that virtue signaling shit, and can plainly see that the existence of Ebola-chan and Ebolism in itself doesn't rely on racism despite her origins and a decent percentage of her memes and followers. Just look at how many normies on deviantart, tumblr, and youtube thought Ebola-chan was cute (rightly so) and made tributes to her without any apparent connections to imageboards.
With all that said, do keep it up. I'd love to see this project finished once all the kinks are worked out.

I'll agree that people got burned before on funding a project. I will also add that as far as I know, they all got their money back. Still, this is why we went this far before trying to pass the hat. If it is true that the negative sentiment is overwhelming, then this just won't get made. We're not doing any more purely "for love", we're all professionals with other work to tend to.
As for "alienating /pol/", I'm not at all sure what you mean. All I ever said was that we were using Hatreon because of their lack of content restrictions, not to indicate support for any other Hatreon project. This is irrelevant anyhow, as we are abandoning Hatreon for the simple reason that it doesn't work. People have been reporting that they cannot complete their contributions, and the site is even inaccessible to us at times, so that is being cancelled and replaced. This should be completed tonight.
The western character names are here to stay, though the characters themselves may drop a -kun or -chan or -sama into their speech. Their actual names do get revealed as part of the plot, but they'll be scientific nomenclature. The setting is not Japan, so they're not going to use Japanese honorifics as a general rule.
The cramming of memes, scenes, and songs is because I had to squeeze them all in there somehow without writing the entire fucking game first. There is one particular character (Chikun) who memes constantly, but she's supposed to be moderately annoying.
The UI, transitions, and text are as good as it's going to get so long as I am the programmer, and we're not likely to find another, better qualified programmer without funding first. The load times (aside from the startup) are mostly related to the song changes, as those are by far the largest assets being loaded.
