Old thread is still afloat, but it won't open and is near bump-limit, so new one is in order I guess.
Anyway, Zachtronics did a new thing, this time cyberpunk/hacking themed.
Doesn't look that different from his other ones gameplay-wise from trailer though, especially Shenzhen I/O.
and with same issue: looks fun, but why shouldn't I just learn real assembly instead?

I enjoyed CoreWar back in the day, so I'm not going to completely dump on 'fake' assembly language games, but these look like a lot of flashing and music to avoid admitting they're just beginner programming exercises that help your character progress.
I guess, if I didn't understand the first thing about Assembly, it might make a nice primer if it's reasonably accurate, but why not just implement an actual PIC-microchip emulator, or something, to give people a taste of simple assembly. Maybe move on from there to ARM?
Ultimately, it's never going to be as much fun as following the code from 40Hex with MASM when I was a kid.

My all time fav game is Shadowrun for the SNES. Anyone know if any of the other SR games are worth it?

They did one for Android a few years ago. Also, the Sega Shadowrun game isn't the same game, at all, as the SNES game. So, give that a shot for sure. Most people seem to agree that Sega's game was better than SNES.

Zachtronics games are about puzzles/optimization first.
His typical game even looks like factory assembly line. I actually thought at first that factorio was made by him.
It's only recently that he started to flavor things up with programming, and he probably isn't afraid to make sacrifices in realism here to make puzzles run smoothly.
>implement an actual PIC-microchip emulator
I wonder if there're some possible legal issues with doing this.

You heard wrong, its a bad game. Non-interactive environment, very basic mechanics, everything other than the art feels like the bare minimum. But the art is nice.

They fucking sandboxed it. So, while the original was a perfect game, broken into areas that let you conquer one section of the country at a time, the new one is one giant city for you wander aimlessly through, hoping you'll stumble on something.
If you have no fucking life at all, and think CyberGoth is the height of fashion, go for it. From my perspective, they took a game I could boot up for half an hour, and play an enjoyable chunk, and made it into a place for retards to pretend they live there.

Dragonfall is excellent overall. Solid plot, good characters, good missions.
Hong Kong is the best if you pretend that the rat shaman and dorf hacker don't exist. Better balance, being set in Asia makes it feel even more cyberpunk, massively improved decking.
Universally, though, there are issues. It's all very flat. Combat in all of them is like nu-XCOM, and is actually probably one of the better parts of the game.

Amazing that we've come full circle and now nonlinear/open world is considered bad. The satellite reign open world was moderately bad, but that doesn't make open world a bad genre

Open World isn't 'bad', it's just a technique that appeals to fat escapists who can't get laid, because you have they need their 'immersion' to help them forget that they're in they still live with their parents, can't get laid and have no friends.
The original Syndicate was a game you could fire up and play over your lunch break, then get back to doing whatever you do with your day.
Sandbox games explicitly require long periods of exploration and immersion to get anywhere. You have to be able to drop at least 2 hours at a time, several times a week, to get any enjoyment out of them at all. Most of the time, you'd need even longer play periods to really enjoy it.
If you have that kind of time, and you're sinking it into video games, there's something wrong with your life, and video games are just taking advantage of that.

I don't think it's bad, I just feel like it's taking over the game industry, in a way. I'd like more linear games to balance it out. I'm not personally a big fan of open world games though.

I've been playing for several hours, mostly snes version.
sega version is a lot easier to die in but more forgiving, you can't run away, you must fight, but you're given a gun from the start, feels arcady. Looks great, more cartoonish than the snes version. I'm currently enjoying the snes version a lot more, looks more serious, a few times I was reminded of bladerunner(intro), the matrix(lady walking to the club, follow the white rabbit) and GitS(when you get the shades he looks like batou). Snes version also seems to have some weird story with a talking dog which is currently my main drive to play it more… I swear I'm not a furry, but I do like weird stories, haven't seen anything too weird in the sega version yet but I haven't played it as long as I've played the snes game. sega controls are better, snes controls are a little clunky but you get used to it.
It's definitely worth playing both, both very different.

I know the term brouzouf is thrown around here a lot, but is EYE actually cyberpunk? There are cyberpunk aspects to its world sure, New Eden is cyberpunk incarnate. But at its core, especially when involving the player character and his story, it is much closer to grimdark.
What are your guys' thoughts?

You'll find out the moment you know what is cyberpunk, good luck with that. I'll say it's just a cynical-leaning science fiction.
