What's so bad about systemd?

 No.42596

I don't know as much about linux as I would like to and am becoming more comfortable with it now. I don't want to be part of the botnet with a backdoor on my computer, so would me running Ubuntu be okay until I become a 'superuser'?

 No.42597

>>42596

I would recommend just using FOSS on Debian as a start and working your way up. The only major issue I have with systemd is that a lot of shit depends on it to function, and most of the time the dependency isn't necessary for the thing to function properly.

 No.42599

>>42595

https://without-systemd.org/wiki/index.php/Arguments_against_systemd

TL;DR:

Creeping bloat, impenetrable code, controversial design choices, makes other projects depend on it.

Some claim it is being pushed on purely political grounds by Red Hat against wishes of larger Linux community.

Also, Lennart Poettering (author) is an asshole.

 No.42600

>>42596

A while ago Ubuntu was selling your data to Amazon. i'm not sure if they backed off on that one or if they still doing it.

 No.42605

>>42600

I'm planning on using Ubuntu until I get comfortable with linux. Can I just block stuff with IP Tables?

 No.42623

>>42605

It can be opted out of, iirc. Try your favourite search engine.

 No.42654

systemd is bad because it goes against the original Unix idea of many small, single purpose programs that interact with each other in the user space. The scope of systemd keeps expanding and changing long held norms that aren't necessarily broken. It's a move that's steering Linux towards a more Windows like experience than the one provided by a traditional Unix environment.

 No.42668

Isn't windows buying Ubuntu or something? It might have been an april fools deal but I'm pretty sure thats close to reality.

 No.42669

Would Devuan be a feasible option? It's just debian without systemd right?

 No.42678

>>42669

not finished yet. best to use debian and stay as FOSS as you can until devuan is finished, then switch and never look back.

 No.42679

>>42668

PROOF?

 No.42686

 No.42689

>>42678

The only thing Devuan has going on over Debian is the lack of systemd. Its developers are still fucking retarded and I don't think you could trust them to ever make a worthwhile distro but hey, Arch Linux has been alive for a while as well.

You can also remove systemd from Debian right now if you want, but it is kind of pointless. Many of the harmful things about systemd are disabled by default on Debian.

 No.42694

>>42686

fuck fuck what the fuck what when how

what will happen because of this? does this mean that microsoft has evil code in ubuntu?

 No.42695

>>42689

>just remove it

>oops! systemd just ripped out everything in the whole computer along with it like a bandaid pulling out hairs!

 No.42696

>>42686

what's another good distro to jump to? i'm bailing out!

 No.42740

>>42654

GNU's not UNIX. :^)

 No.43106

>>42740

Linux isn't GNU. Systemd is for Linux, it's not made for GNU and seeks to get rid of much of the GNU project.

GNU and Linux are both not UNIX but they are Unix, if you get my drift.

>>42696

Gentoo is actually really nice, if you get past the meming and ignore the ricers (they all use Arch these days anyway). There's also OpenSuSe but I don't use it.

 No.43113

File: 1471209685335.jpg (445.83 KB, 1000x664, 125:83, poettering-mistake.jpg)

Be sure to avoid any software associated with Redhat, Freedesktop.org and Canonical. They are the cancer of Linux.

 No.43123

>>42696

install gentoo

 No.43129

>>42696

Arch is minimal as fuarrk, so iirc you should be able to set up a systemd-free environment.

But you'll have to work a little to get out of a command line.

 No.43147

>>43129

you might be able to avoid systemd with Arch but it'll be a royal fucking pain in the ass

I'm pretty sure it can be done but be prepared to spend a lot of time fucking around with your system

 No.43154

>>43147

This

Void is as minimal as Arch, doesn't require endless compilation like Gentoo, and it doesn't use systemd

only problem is: documentation is scarce.

 No.43155

Why did every major distro under the sun switch to it then? Just because it's a new thing?

 No.43346

>>43155

>Why did every major distro under the sun switch to it then?

non-gentoo user detected.

if you paid any attention to anything anywhere ever you would see that shills turn virtually everything to shit because people are retarded.

why do you think nearly every website is paying cloudflare and giving them their private keys so they can read everything anyone does on those websites in cleartext?

if you want it in more detail:

reddit and other shitplaces condition people to ignore the content of an argument and only judge by how much they like the person who makes the argument.

shills just socially engineer the fuck out of nearly everyone.

sage for troll thread.

 No.43350

>>43155

Because it's made by Lennart Poettering, author of PulseAudio.

PulseAudio was a good idea, then the implementation sucked and more shit got piled on.

 No.43360

>>43346

Ah yes, Lennart paid a bunch of people on the internet to praise systemd.

 No.43361

>>43155

There is advantages to systemd.

Mostly speed and ease of use.

 No.43362

>>43361

spoken like someone who has never looked at a linux log file.

 No.43368

 No.43370

>>43362

>>43368

Explain to me how unit files are _not_ 100x easier than a bunch of init scripts.

Explain to me how systemd is _not_ faster than InitV

Enlighten me, wise ones.

 No.43371

assplain 2 me liek im 5 how this is not utterly irrelevant on any desktop machine not to mention all the other problems that make systemd useless in datacenters.

 No.43372

You know what is even faster? init scripts in binary.

You know how to speed it up even further? Hardcode your startup services into the kernel.

Additional services can be included for a fee to RedHat NSA services Inc.

It's a few nanoseconds faster so it must be better.

 No.43373

i think it has been said often enough that everyone loves the idea of convenient init config files instead of bash scripts but that this single advantage does not rectify all the problems systemd brings so i suggest we bumplock the thread and ban everyone who recreates it.

temp bans obviously, as those threads are probably mostly created from innocent people's computers that involuntarily became part of the NSA botnet and are now under control of their persona management software.

 No.43395

>>43360

Someone is paying them. There are shills in this thread right now and there's one in particular on /tech/ who relentlessly spams (to the point that he's ~50%+ of all posts) any thread where systemd is mentioned.

 No.43406

>>43395

i wish it was just systemd spam there, i left because /tech/ completely sold out 4chan style.

and because of the loli spam.

 No.43425

>>43406

Yeah, it's pretty bad. Honestly, most of the chans are jammed as far as signal to noise ratio goes nowadays. Too many spammers, too many shills.

 No.43428

>>43425

i'll have another look at darknet chans, hopefully the barrier to entry means the community is small enough to not warrant shill intervention.

if that fails too i might… actually start becoming productive and make something of my life. bring down the system and shit like that.

 No.43463

>>43346

That… still doesn't explain why so many distros switched to it. Are you feeling okay, anon?

 No.43470

>>43463

sorry but if "shills convinced distro owners to switch to it" is not an explanation i suggest you sue your lobotomizer for apparently he did a shit job, unless you paid him to make yourself retarded.

 No.43495

>>43470

>unless you paid him to make yourself retarded.

not much to do there, it's probably illegal too unless you have special permit from whoever is that dude's legal guardian.

so are all shills allowed now? free for all? and what about bomb building manuals and CP and all that, can we post that?

whatever, i'll just start and see when feds start arresting the board owner.

 No.43518

>>43470

red hat employees had and have a lot of influence on the debian council. can you spell conflict of interest?

 No.43529

>>43518 was meant as a reply to >>43463

 No.46107

>>43370

Look kids, this is a big sign of a paid shill. No one said a thing about InitV, in fact, most don't even use it anymore, but the shills always use that comparison as an argument. Where are the mods of this fucking board?

 No.46116

>>42654

>systemd is bad because it goes against the original Unix idea of many small, single purpose programs that interact with each other in the user space. The scope of systemd keeps expanding and changing long held norms that aren't necessarily broken.

Good answer.

Also note that OpenBSD runs on Ras Pi and doesn't require systemd.

 No.46117

>>46107

> paid shill

Maybe, but Linux attracts kooky cranks, so maybe this is just his personal favorite thing.

Linux people. Sigh. Some of us don't suck all the time.

 No.46134

>>43147

>I'm pretty sure it can be done

how much time did you spend before you gave up?

 No.46142

>Gentoo

>Slackware

>Void

>CRUX

>OpenBSD

There, pick one of those.
