“Cyberspace. A consensual hallucination experienced daily by billions of legitimate operators, in every nation.”

Heya guys,

Was thinking of building myself an AR wearable. The only real question is– what do I do with it? Like, what do I put on the HUD?

Sure, I could put shit like the weather and fuck, but I can check that once a day by opening my phone's lockscreen. It's redundant.

So, what shit do I do with my AR wearable?

The biggest issue with wearables right now is that they generally aren't very practical in my opinion. Sure it's useful to have information like the weather, but you can just do that on your phone which is pretty much like a wearable jut not really bulky and not attached to your body.

I don't want to say don't do it because hobby projects are always fun and educational. The real issue is that I don't think wearables in the traditional sense are going to be a thing. Maybe when VR technology becomes more combat and affordable, but what we have right now makes augmented reality not feasible with anything besides games.

I really wish there were more useful things you could do with it. Perhaps for now you should start with the basics and the hardware and structure if you haven't been. Hopefully you can think of something more unique than the stuff your phone can. Just keep in mind that you don't necessarily have to create something completely new and original. Sometimes just the action of creation is enough. People make cyberdecks but they're not very practical when it comes to portable computers.

You could use it to interact with an mp3 player, a small computer or mobile phone without looking down.

You could also have it render or just lit up differently colored leds for sensor input like IR, UV or some EM wavelength that the eye cannot usually see.

What you can accomplish really just depends on your skills and resources.

- gps navigator

- camera view (infrared view, rear view, remote drone view)

- incoming messages

- powerlevel meter

Personaly, I just want virtual private monitor for my notebook, but it requires high resolution and high field of view, but even most advanced commercial AR-glasses can't offer it, and there's no news on pinlight displays (vidrelated) whatsoever.

> infrared view

wouldn't this cost tens of thousands?

Yes if you want thermal vision.

For near-infrared on a budget you just remove IR-filter from a camera and add a bunch of IR-leds.

Check these out. I really want a pair so you can take some ideas from them. It looks very polished and useful.

I'd settle for low-light vision.

What I'd want on a wearable:

First of all it'd have to be low-profile

Rear view

Hidden camera detector, like you have on some phone apps

barcode reader

An option for Terminator-vision

Facial recognition app linked to Facebook

zoom with stabilised picture

IR underpants vision

Rangefinder

They Live vision, that replaces words with OBEY, and faces with alien skulls with googly eyes.

Noir vision, black and white with film scratches.

> Facial recognition app linked to Facebook

actually spent 20+ hours looking into this

it's actually incredibly possible, the only thing being that Facebook has god knows how much legal shit preventing people from doing it. and it'd be easy for them to catch, too

Another thing that might be handy is an SMS text app on an HUD, maybe controlled by one of those laser eye-position things that quadriplegics use. It'd make texting while driving or walking safer and less obtrusive.

I could see it being useful if you like work in finance and you can get a real time feed of your stocks

Or during driving or walking having a GPS map, way more comfy than looking down at a phone
