I was pretty bored with current theme and made amber theme for /cyber/:
https://paste.debian.net/314651/
To install it, go to options, paste this script from above in custom theme field. Then change base theme to Yotsuba B and press Save
Would appreciate feedback and/or help.
Also, I've found background texture for default theme - http://8ch.net/cyber/src/1420270805988.png
Can board owner finally fix it?

I like this a lot, I wasn't really a fan of the default CSS here anyway. Thanks, User.
I'm not too keen on the solid amber spoilers though, they feel a bit intrusive and draw the eyes too much. You should probably have also mentioned that anyone who wants to use this needs to disable the boards default CSS and select Yotsuba B as the result looks horrific.

This needs to be fixed. What color do you want? They become fully invisible with background color. Black fall out of style. Looking at quick reply box - there are few pale colors in empty fields like Name, Drop files here or that dashed line. Maybe use them for spoiler? Or alternatively, use one of the colors as borders that outline spoiler of background color.
What font should be used? Those used in default cyber CSS look more tech-y and more fitting. I can also ad this dashed italic border from below subject/username, if I find how to stop it from piercing through OP posts.
>You should probably have also mentioned that anyone who wants to use this needs to disable the boards default CSS and select Yotsuba B as the result looks horrific.
Oh, right. Also, there is firefox add-on called Stylish. Useful for those who don't want to store chan options.

I seem to have been too focused on what the spoiler looked like to read what it actually said haha, my bad. I'm no graphics/UX guy so I have no idea what colour would look good. That said, I do agree with what you said about the fonts, how do I make it the /cyber/ default font (at least for comparisons sake)?

Man, I wish computer operating systems still looked like this. So clean, simple and elegant.
Is there any way I can make my actual computer look more like this? My everyday machine is a MacBook Pro (please stop calling me a shazbot, I'm being serious here), other than making it dual-bootable with a Linux distro that can be easily riced, are there any Mac options for customising your UI?

You need to find every line "font-family" and paste:
"Lucida Console", Monaco, monospace;
Anyway, here font is already added: https://paste.debian.net/314742/
Take a look at the spoilers too, I've fixed them. At least now they are non-intrusive.

I think the difference between a highlighted and a non-highlighted post is too small. I'm not saying you should make it green or anything, but either make the border a little bit bigger or make the color different-er than the non-highlighted.

As for GTK theme, we should do it. I'll try messing with GTK/Cinnamon when I (re)install Mint. How exactly making GTK themes work? Do we need to make icons, install scripts or it just goes into single config? Never did ricing/themes before and did CSS only once before amber, by the way

I'll make a repo on github for it soon, maybe even tomorrow. It might also host GTK theme if we do it in the future.

Fixed it as I could: https://paste.debian.net/316670/
Visited ban page for the first time and it is surprisingly shitty. Again, I face the same problem as with post menu - default rules leak through user theme. I'm seriously recommend to use something like Stylish from now on, because using user options is not "robust" enough.

It's a royal bitch to set up for GTK 3, unless it's gotten better since I've used it last. It's supposed to be mostly CSS, but I remember having serious issues with it last time. I'll dick around with some stuff.
Does /cyber/ have an IRC? It'd be good if we could meet up there and discuss making these themes. And yeah, I guess I could make a new Github account. Did you already make one? I just want to know before I set it up. Technically you did all the grunt work, I just fixed some minimal padding and margin stuff. And I'll try and figure out where the ban list issue is coming from. Sometimes it's in a place you didn't think it was.
To find it, use Firefox, inspect element and then go to the 3D view. Look at each thing that element is in (I had to do this for a theme on Appchan that was giving me problems).
Usually does the trick.

I think for a prototype, alpha GTK2/3 theme, we should find a simple theme that's already been made and jack with the colors. It'd probably be a lot easier.
As for QT, I have no idea how to theme it. Plus, if we're doing the KDE theme, we may as well do a theme for Kwin and the panel. So we've got a vimperator theme, board theme and xchat theme. I'll put together something for the terminal so people can just swap palettes. Shouldn't be too hard.

This is how amber.css was made - I took literally first simple-looking grey/black board css and started changing colors and rules. The main difference is that testing GTK won't be as quick as applying things in web browser.

What about basing on this:
<http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/FlatStudio?content=154296>
Pros: minimal as hobo shazbot, square buttons & GPL
Cons: last update @ 2012, not file-explorer agnostic (native for Nautilus) & it's not Numix.
Or that one:
<http://satya164.deviantart.com/art/Numix-GTK3-theme-360223962>
Pros: it's Numix, a classic & schway as fuck.
Cons: not as minimal as the above, not free as beer & made by indians.

I think this would be a good modern Amber theme. I'll fuck with it.
I also want a retro one in the style of CDE/Motif/Solaris, so I'll work on that one, too.
That makes two themes, one modern and one retro.

Updates:
I'm going to make it my project over the next week or so to create a GTK theme with the Amber style colors. This will be the prototype. It will use the Windows Classic GTK3/GTK2 theme (which is essentially Redmond). From there, I'll do one for CDE/Motif and then jack with the Numix one.

Tried messing with FlatStudio and HighContrast and I was dissatisfied with results. After chopping configs up for several hours, still it didn't look like amber.css. I hope you will be more successful with windows classic theme then me with those themes.
To help you a little bit, I'll describe what colour codes correspond to:
#FFAA00 – Main text, button (background), window borders, header (background)
#FF7700 – Context highlight, menu elements, links, button text (when hovered), hovered text
#100000 – Window background, button text (un-hovered), header (text)
#311700 – Unfocused borders, shaded text, shaded/un-pressable buttons
#AF0A0F – Focus highlight (for borders), close buttons (hovered)

The problem is that people use these words as means to their ends, they are abused until they mean something else, ignoring history and perverting the original intentions of the philosophers.

And are just easier on the eyes than monotone amber or teal in my opinion.
Main goal though was to separate images and text into separate columns.
I think it's greatly improves readability.
There's a lot of room for improvement of course, but CSS is really mentally taxing to work with.

The max-width and max-height properties of the video container are both at 300px. (Image 1) I'm not sure why he would have chosen to do this, but I'm a relative novice, so what do I know. The options are to add padding, or increase the max-width. I thinking max-width is the way to go, since it doesn't add a new property, and puts it at a 4:3 ratio. (Image 2)
div.video-container {
width: auto !important;
height: auto !important;
max-height: 300px !important;
max-width: 400px !important;
}
Also, I noticed that the pop-out feature's box is a little small. (Image 3) I don't know if anyone even uses the feature, but setting the max-height to 312px will fix it. Another bug relating to that which I encountered is that, if the embedded video is an OP, when returned to a non-popped state, it still retains the color of the grey reply box. (Image 4) Test example: >>26628 As far as I know, that's a JavaScript thing that I can't fix that with CSS. It's probably an easy fix, though.

>I'm not sure why he would have chosen to do this, but I'm a relative novice, so what do I know.
I think I'm seeing why he would have done this now. Simple solutions won't work for all post types. Fixes to embeds in an OP will fuck with embeds in replies. Same with popped and non-popped videos. In this case, the "fix" that I gave pushes the text next to the thumbnail of a yet-to-be-embedded video way over, and it looks kinda shit. It will require greater specificity to fix all of the problems presented. This should be a bit better:
.reply > .video-container {
max-height: 300px !important;
max-width: 400px !important;
width: auto !important;
height: auto !important;
margin-bottom: 10px !important;
display: block !important;
float: none !important;
}
.thread > .video-container {
width: auto !important;
height: auto !important;
max-height: 300px !important;
max-width: 400px !important;
margin-bottom: 10px !important;
display: block !important;
float: none !important;
}
.reply > .popped {
max-height: 312px !important;
max-width: 400px !important;
}
.thread > .popped {
max-height: 312px !important;
max-width: 400px !important;
}
.post-image{
margin-bottom: 10px!important;
}
.video-pop{
float: right!important;
margin-right: 24.5%;
}
.yt-help{
font-size: 9px;
white-space: nowrap;
}
This might not be the most elegant or prettiest solution, but it should solve the problems with embed formatting as well as the pop-out.
That pop-out button is tricky, because the HTML for it is actually before HTML for the sentence about clicking to embed, limiting what can be done with its placement relative to the things around it. The simplest solution was to reduce the size of the sentence, which I didn't want to do, but I was having trouble getting it to behave.
Hopefully, someone can improve upon/replace this.

I figured out a way to make any picture ambrish in GIMP
>Make a background layer colored C0, M100, Y100, K94 (off black)
>Put the picture you want to A M B E R I Z E a layer above
>edge detect
>max out contrast (skippable)
>Threshold
>colorize, hue should be roughly 30
>Select all black bits and erase, revealing the background
Feels a little flat though, and any image with too much lighting fucks it up big time, but I think they came out alright.

I don't like the feel of American cities. They lack a certain feel I get with other more Eastern cities for a /cyber/ vibe. Though your modifications do look really nice I personally like them, maybe add some schway lines to them or something as well.

I just tested this in gimp and it spit out complete garbage, possibly because my source image was the interior of a building with smudges on the walls, and it was detecting all the smudges…. but I thought of a pretty interesting alternative method.
Requires a second program though. anything for vector graphics. I use Inkscape.
First use gimp to posterize the image. use as few colors as possible. Enough that all the buildings and details on them are clear and distinct, but all the surfaces are monochrome. paint over details if necessary. Export that.
Then vectorize, remove the fill color but keep the lines, and maybe make them more bold.
Here's my starting image, my posterized image, and my end result.

Continuation of this post.
This method does not play nice with extremely detailed high-res images. I tested it with one of the skylines in >>45174 and… well…. doing the basic trace method that was pretty fast, it worked, and some fiddling (which took longer to load than to tell it what to do), It worked, but it uh…. it went all wiggly…. but using edge detect…. 10 minutes in and it crashed before it finished…. so…. if you want to do this really well, you have to know what you're doing and can't auto-pilot unless it's a small image to begin with.
However here's my having been vectorized version of that. (image is not a vector, obviously…. does 8ch support svg?)

Since the current /cyber/ theme has been officially added to the list of "official" themes and can be swapped to in a blink using the Options menu, what would you think about renewing the CSS? I'm really digging >>41771 despite the unreadable blue, but it wouldn't be complicated to change the color or put a different background over the blue text, or even change the palette to look more like modern terminal color schemes, which are specifically designed to be easy on the eyes.

This thread is ~4 years old.
Feels like yesterday when 8chan was in its golden age. Every board was booming, even the smaller ones like 8lounge had a comfortable pace. Now all of them are basically frozen in time. With threads like these that have become made of rock, and with it the culture from those years ago.

I don't understand this constant behavior. What is wrong with slow boards? Why do you crave to hear the chattering and the clattering of the foreign hordes, slavering disgustingly over our memes, harvesting them and spreading them amongst their horrific kin, distorting them and making them as foul as they? That is what you'd get with high post rates. Have you seen the high post boards? They are infected, and the rioting is intensifying to the point where we may not be able to contain it.
I suppose you just long for a stronger community, I do understand that. We all feel that on some level or another. More posters, more speed as you've alluded to, wouldn't build that, though, so I don't truly understand your feel - as it were.

>with it the culture from those years ago
That's good. Old threads preserve what has been before, the culture and the knowledge. They will hold the board apart when it is messed up and will not just become a subversion of a larger one.

Reread my post. I never said that I have an issue with slow boards, just an issue with them being dead (frozen in time). I sometimes browse boards that I remember and there have been no posts at all.
I quite like slow boards, probably my favorite thing if they aren't 1 post a month kind of slow. I agree that the faster ones are more cancerous.
