Condoms are great. Herpes and HPV are spread by skin contact, others are spread by blood contact or contact with bodily fluids.
In case of anal, it's easier to acquire STDs. That's because of micro-fissures that can happen during intercourse. Normally not a big problem, they heal quite fast, but it allows for exchange of bodily fluids -> infection. So unless you're monogamous and both have been tested for STD, raw is a no go.
There's also stuff like PrEP (http://www.whatisprep.org/) which can be used, but is no 100% guarantee.
Generally not having sex, or using condoms when you do, is the way to go.
