I think a big problem is that Spoony has burned himself out on trying too hard where it doesn't really matter. A good artist (any type of art) knows that illusion is a key to success. For example, if you want to make a movie you don't waste time studying rock composition for some random-ass backdrop, you just make it look believable enough. The audience knows that the backdrop is not a real location, you just have to make the backdrop believable enough that the audience can suspend their imagination.

If you watch some of the Spoony commentaries you will see that he wasted his time on random shit no one cared about. In his last FF VIII episode whenever he presses the remote a sound plays. You would think that was just some free stock sound effect from some database, but no, he actually went through random YouTube videos trying to find that particular sound effect he had heard years ago in some old Hanna-Barbera cartoon. For the finale of his FF X video he originally wanted to hire guest actors dressed as Ghostbusters, and spent a lot of time in vain trying to get them on the show. Even in the final version, where evil Spoony opens the box and the hand grenade pins come out, those are actual hand grenade pins he bought off eBay. Any sane person would have just faked it with some cheap keyrings and a bit of wire.

It also doesn't help that he's doing RPGs a lot. Making fun of a movie is easy, you watch it for about and hour and a half and you have seen the entire thing. Then you can write the review. But RPGs take tens of hours to play though, full of padding to make it last even longer, and then you have to go through all of that footage over and over again.

The problem these people have is that there isn't much of a threshold for who can do this stuff. This means that sooner or later, someone new will show up with fresh jokes, more energy and just generally more appealing that will take views away from them. The longevity of a internet career is very short because you can't just do the same thing forever and expect people to keep coming back. The jokes become stale, the gimmick looses it's charm and becomes annoying, they become lazy and entitled and then they go the rout of DSP.

The internet reviewer thing really head-fucks a lot of people into expecting that the train will keep moving forever. That's why you often see these idiots buy houses they can't afford (DSP, Sponny, Doug Walker and many others). They think that the patterns of normal careers is similar to that of internet reviewers when they couldn't be more wrong.

I hope everyone pays attention to these people because they are the first wave of idiots that are attempting to make reviews, let's plays and all that a career and we're seeing how the market reacts to it. It's going to be interesting to see how many manage to branch off into other things (don't think a lot will. People like RLM probably can because they seem to have their shit together) and how many will crash and burn. Also keep in mind the kind of person this career appeals to. If we look at those in these positions, they tend to be autistic, emotionally damaged, unstable, poorly educated or with few marketable skills and irresponsible. James Rolfe, on the other hand, was in fact intelligent enough to acquire marketable skills and diversify his options. Before he started using Cinemassacre cocks as his full-time job, he worked notable roles using what he'd practiced making movies as a kid and AVGN videos after college. He's directed commercials, coached voice actors, edited other people's videos and music, and set up special effects on a couple of freelance gigs. Also, unlike Walker, he's networked in the Jersey/New York production industry. Additionally, he's married and I think his wife works for a steady wage or salary. They have a daughter, too, so I'd at least hope they're putting some in the bank.

Here is what amazes me about these "reviewers": they originally started out basically just ranting about shit that's too mundane to get worked up about. And in a way that's what made it fun, in real life sperging out over a bad movie or video game is not worth it and you don't bother with it, but these people actually sit through it and show you all the awful parts. That's what made the AVGN so funny, I would never have bothered beyond five minutes with a game like Back to the Future on NES, but he did and he made all the awful parts actually funny. And short skits can be part of that as long as they are short and relevant. Remember Spoony's Highlander video game review where he was talking about the awful camera and then showed what it would be like in real life if it worked like that? It only took a few seconds, it didn't outstay its welcome.

So what do these "reviewers" do? They start wasting their money and effort on shit that has nothing to do with that: costumes, fight scenes with evil doppelgangers and shit. Just look at vid related, even if it's absolute shit it's still shit that had to be filmed, edited and rendered. Doug actually went out of his way to hire people for money for his shitty skits, this isn't just getting his brother on camera for a few seconds. If you want to know what the problem is with people like Linkara and Doug's videos is the fact they don't want to make reviews. I know everyone here is singing the praises of RLM and James but I feel like they really give a shit about film and the "art", if you can call it that, of reviewing, especially RLM. Doug and Linkara, especially the latter as seen in that video, think they're comedians and just want to make god awful skits. That's why Doug wanted to make that skit show instead of Nostalgia Critic and why Linkara videos are… well, what they are. He just wants to make his own Tokusatsu series but knows no one would watch without the pretext of what he was famous for to begin with. To be fair, the AVGN doesn't play games that go on for 40+ hours. The longest game he has played recently was Zelda: Link's Awakening because he had never played the game before. Watch the last two minutes of part 2, it would take them a year to play through such a long game.

It's not so much playing I'm concerned with as much as recording. Since recording all of your own footage is time consuming to do and you have to sort through a lot of it. If you watch James Rolf's video on how he makes his own reviews, he has to sort through dozens of harddrives of footage and record time codes on a notepad.

Wheras if someone records their own footage and gives it to the reviewer it's a much faster process that makes the process of making the review faster.

Fair use isn't something that's really that well defined. It's a legal defense used when you try to defend your work in court.

The basic gist of it is, if something is "transformative" meaning you took something and made it distinctive from the original so that it couldn't be confused for the original. Then it's considered transformative. The reason they get into this debate is because Doug can just claim "parody" and that's almost impossible to go after unless you go for the straight "he stole 8 minutes of my cocks" attack.

Giving away the plot of a movie/book/game is really hard to claim it is stealing cocks. You can find this anywhere, even wikipedia. You can do this in a written review, and indeed people have, and have never been prosecuted for it. Taking actual footage is a much easier thing to go after but again, really hard to actually prosecute. It's why these companies just file copywrite claims because those are much easier and rarely DMCA because of the risk of counter suing. If Douge was ever taken to court over copywrite infringement I'm pretty certain they would settle in Douge's favor. Depending on how much money he has that is.

It's not something that is very well written down and is mostly born out of America's outdated copywrite laws that are clearly just an adaptation of much older patent laws, just for intangible creative properties. It's something that needs to be greatly overhauled.

nature of the work (you've more freedom to copy factual work than works of fiction)

Same here, but in my case it wasn't Let's Play, I wanted to do videos on math. When it came to editing the footage it was so full of awkward pauses, stutters and the voice was just awful to listen to, I deleted the entire thing. I find it hard to speak out loudly when I don't have a person to talk to, I feel really awkward the entire time and it shows in the end result.
