I just don't understand how anyone can defend the art in this show. It was like every artist on tumblr and twitter came out in support of it. Do they genuinely like this awful art, or is it just political?

It's politics. They'd rather die than agree with their enemies that it looks like shit.

That's a horrible world view. Because of that sort of apathy and indifference, projects with actual talent involved get cancelled in favor of low effort shit like the Emoji movie.

And where would that quality come from if there is no standard? If the industry is going to be moved by money, people with no talent are going to smear shit on the TV screen if it means they are going to get a buck at the end of the day.

What I find really amusing is how Genndy will use same-face for storytelling reasons, while the Cal Arts crowd doesn't even realize they are using sameface, because they are incapable of drawing anything else.

The absolute state of American animation.
Infinity Train is literally "we want the Gravity-Falls and Adventure Time audiences" The Show with an empowered "dorky" female protagonist and a "quirky" side cast. They even nailed the early AT style of background art to a T. So yeah, derivative and I also sense some "young adult" literature influences.
CalArts Roar or "Reddit Epic" soft-edged self-aware post-ironic gender-neutral humor based on an old IP we don't give a fuck about that had to be castrated.
But my opinions are the same as everyone probably so I won't bother with the other shows.

Tara Strong has always been a "kitchen sink" voice actress because she's never had a role big enough to coast on. And from the studio's perspective, it's better to hire someone who has been around for a while and is therefore more "dependable". Also there's the sex.

The industry has always and will continue to be moved by money. The reason there was once great cartoons was because when the networks were starting out, it made sense from a business standpoint to produce good cartoons to attract ratings. There was solidarity between talented creators and executives, but now that ratings have dropped, there's not enough money to spend on making innovative cartoons. Since there was no longer any big payoff or capital to fund promising projects, talented creators both within the animation industry and up-and-coming ones jumped ship to work in comics, gaming, film, and smaller projects like music videos to get paid their profession's worth. Animation had become a stagnant industry, and the only people who were willing to take the now lower-paying creative jobs were the fresh-out-of college sexual deviants and cultural marxists we see today.
What the animation industry needs is to move away from the models of networks and subscription services, let studios compete with each other directly, and let them keep their profits to create better cartoons. Then you'd have innovation and a high demand for excellence, not this prostrating attitude a lot of cartoon fans seem to have where they make excuses for the creators' incompetence and activism and ignore the ugliness of a work's animation and art style, praising it solely for its "good writing".

>Ben and Raven
Both of those characters are relatively obscure in the grand scheme of things. A character has to be household-name tier to be capable of letting their VA live off of them; and even in those cases, the VAs will typically do other shit as well. Timmy Turner used to be Tara's golden goose just because it was on for so long, but now that's gone.

There is no doubt that politics and nepotism played a role in the immediacy and ferocity of the defense. (You'd think creators would have learned not to rely on such fickle things given how quickly the tide turned against the PPG reboot.) But in fairness to Roar, I think a lot of people confused "something we don't want" with "something irredeemably bad." Personally, I feel TCR is more in the something we don't want category.
I don't mind this level of design for what is a gag cartoon. I don't mind same faces here the same way I don't mind it in Peanuts or anime - some design consistency is actually good. There is a larger debate about why studios are only giving us cheap, safe, exploitative, disrespectful, legacy fan-hating, comedic kiddy fare, but it's just bad luck that Roar has become the whipping boy for this. It shouldn't be, and that's the amount of defense I think it deserves.

It gets the hate because the creator came out and shat on the original show and shat on the fans in response to criticism. The other shows just implied that attitude, he voiced it.

If you mean the manbun guy, nah it wasn't him. That garbage was mainly from social media cocksuckers and "industry" friends who are probably no longer his friends. He wisely clammed up and made his social media accounts private within days of that trailer.
The storyboarders also deleted defensive posts within the week. The blowback to their blowback definitely got someone's attention at WB.
