Is there actually any comics that centers around gay characters that aren't just pandering or propaganda?
No.1039251

So basically a gay main character? I only know gay erotica/porn comics that have that, besides some boring non-porn webcomics that I wouldn't recommend to anyone… Otherwise I really can't help you.

Porn I'd say falls into pandering, but then again you could fit almost anything into pandering loosely. I think the bigger problem is that sexuality comes second to most characters and most gays are brought up thinking "loud and proud" is an ideal so any comic about it is going to be all about their ideals since separating politics and art is a dead thought. You could honestly just say "Any comic where a character doesn't express any sexuality" and be just as right.
No.1039265
>>1039259
Basically this. Being gay could only generate so much content for storytelling before it becomes full on in-your-face virtue signaling… I honestly can't see sexuality in general having any real impact on a "normal" comic unless the comic includes romance and relationshit.
>>1039263
>You could honestly just say "Any comic where a character doesn't express any sexuality" and be just as right.
That might as well be the "safest" way to put gay characters in your comic without compromising your audience both straight and gay, I don't like seeing faggy shit in my capes either.
Just let fans speculate; straight readers will assume all characters are straight by default, and tumblrinas will "ship" dude characters together and get high off the thought. It's a win/win.
Case in point: Samurai Jack always assumed to be gay by lefties due to his celibate attitude (not actively bothering to find a SO, not showing interest/attraction towards girls he met…etc), same thing for Ashi before she boned him.

Scratch that, I just remembered I had this compilation of gay comics from the 1980's till the 2010's that had some nice gems fit for this thread. Mind you that the compilation only had one-shots and zine strips, no continuous comic series, so you're gonna have to make do with those for now…

Considering both comics debuted in the 1990s there's a high chance it was unobtrusive, and you accepting it because of that. As far as I can remember it wasn't until the late 2000s that comics started aggressively pushing faggots in readers' faces.

Not sure if it counts, but there's Desire of the Endless, from Neil Gaiman's Sandman. Desire is a man/woman (in the fantasy sense not the tranny sense) and loves both men and women, there's not much focus on who s/he desires as much as there's focus on who s/he manipulates using desire. A very intriguing character that's as fascinating as much as s/he is disturbing… Otherwise the comic contains minor gay characters who are well written, the Sandman overall is one of the best examples (if not the best) of diversifying your characters without being a dramatic faggot about it.

Maybe an issue of Stormwatch where Midnighter made his debut, or the one-shot Everyman which you can tell was made on a shoestring budget but that's more of a gender bending comic than a gay one.
Personally I'd recommend Life with Kevin, that's volume 3 of Archie's Kevin Keller comic series. The first volume had light virtue signaling and war propaganda, which was cranked up to eleven in the second volume. Luckily the third volume has none of that shit aside from maybe a couple of exceptions and is much more well written, besides that it's self-contained and can be read on its own.

I once read a comic about a chubby antisocial wageslave in a post apocalyptic cyberpunk society that developed in a crater that was an extremist capitalist market where the corporations literally ran the entire government with interesting concepts like personal social time even off work was taxed and body mods being a fashion trend and also incredibly common due to how many covered up accidents happen in the world who falls in love with a guy who was in a lower cast than him but moved up after one of said accidents and the corporation deemed it fit to compensate him enough to bump him up a social level.
It was softcore porn and romance. I was really upset. The art wasn't too bad, but the concept was utterly wasted on the plot.

>I was really upset. The art wasn't too bad, but the concept was utterly wasted on the plot.
I know. This shit pisses me off to no end. Not because of "le gay agenda" or whatever the fuck, but because I don't like "romance" stories to begin with (in quotes, because calling the typical one of these webcomics "romance" is stretching the definition of "porn").
And I hate how they advertise themselves as being anything other than shitty porn, because usually there's a good, I don't know, 20-30 pages of worldbuilding that make you excited for the story, until every single page after that is just gay porn, or leading to gay porn.
This is probably the problem OP has. It seems like more often than not, if a character is a fag, then the entire story centers entirely around faggotry. Since I don't give a shit about romance stories, it's comparable to writing a capeshit character who's super power is "THE GUY WHO HAS SEX WITH WOMEN!" Like, it's boring as shit. I don't care who or what you fuck, that's not enough to get me engaged in an actual story.

The thing with webcomics, which are typically indie, is that there's no quality control from higher up. You are your own boss, for better or worse… Wanna insert random nude shots / sex scenes into a non-romance comic? Sure why not. Wanna overshadow your story with fan service and man-waifus? Go right ahead.
Homosexuality as a personal aspect to begin with is centered around love and/or sex, to include such an aspect in your work immediately means you have to include love/sex elements… The alternative of course being that you use homosexuality as an "identity" (i.e. men being effeminate and flamboyant, women being manly and butch) which is almost guaranteed to make your character shit. All in all it's pretty much a lose/lose situation unless you're an experienced writer who can allude to characters' sexuality in a non-derailing way.

As for the lack of an anchor icon on bump-locked threads, I have no control over that. That's Beyonder's realm.

That's understandable, thank you for the clarification. Although, since the thread itself didn't break any rules, leaving it alone would have been the right thing to do.

It will more or less happen, inevitably. Just please deal with the spam itself instead of the thread, you already do that with all other threads so this one should be no different.

Streetwize Comics had government funding to make educational comics for schools back in the 80's.
They had a few LGBT discrimination stories, and gay safe sex stories. The company was pretty much run by lesbians, I remember them tearing a strip off Bodine Amerikah when he tried to get work there, for drawing attractive women. >Don't these count as propaganda though?
Imo asking for a fictional piece free of propaganda is pointless, LGBT themed or not.
Given that most stories relate interactions between people, they have, consciously or not, a political meaning.
Just showing your characters under a certain light, depicting them in a certain way to make the reader either sympathize with them or on the contrary reject them and mock them tells something about the way you see the character's actions and features.
Having stories about faggots discriminated is no more propaganda than the classic tales ending up with and they married and had a lot of children, namely both are.
That's for the theory though. In practice, LGBT stories being deemed propaganda or not will depend on your own sensibilities about them.

>depicting them in a certain way to make the reader either sympathize with them or on the contrary reject them and mock them
That's true, it's just way more "subtle" than the usual propaganda pieces that are straightforward with their motives. But then again an experienced writer could make characters who are multi-dimensional enough, that different readers would have different opinions of them. Ever saw a movie where you ended up liking the antagonist despite being depicted as evil, more than the protagonist who's depicted as good? A well-written character isn't defined –or restricted– by his role in a given story.
>LGBT stories being deemed propaganda or not will depend on your own sensibilities about them
Not necessarily. Usually I hate seeing gay characters in fiction but sometimes they get it right and I don't end up hating the character, even in situations where he's not meant to be sympathized with in the context of the story.
>>1042133
I recognize the art style, definitely recall seeing a couple of his stories in that comics compilation mentioned at the start of the thread. >Imo asking for a fictional piece free of propaganda is pointless, LGBT themed or not.
It depends on how one sided it is. In order to constitute propaganda it needs to be a:) Overtly political and b:) unable or unwilling to present both positive and negatives about the argument.
If it's literally just "All people are gay and the ones that aren't are actually gay but wont admit it and they're homophobic racist mysoginerrrrrds" that's propaganda. For example the sex ed comics featuring multi ethnic people and people with disabilities? Or the comic about the trans 8 year old boy who thinks he's a girl. That's propaganda. Captain Planet also constitutes propaganda. But then you have comics like Watchmen that are incredibly political and ideological which aren't propaganda because it represents multiple contrary ideologies and they're all shown to be shit and don't work.
Propaganda doesn't try to be respectful to alternative viewpoints. It is clearly intentioned to paint an "us vs. them" narrative by making a strawmen out of the "them" while upholding the "US" as moral good, epitome of great, the only thing holding us back is "them" etc etc. When you loosen up the definition, sure you could toss all narrative art under that, but that's not entirely accurate.

When Cyclone Comics were being marketed to you Sepos, DeVries and Lumsden decided a gay hero was a deal-killer (this was the 80's), and rewrote the 'Cross as a sort of early metrosexual, and his obvious lesbian business partner became his girlfriend. Which kind of turned out alright, because it was one of the better written relationships in comics and they never fridged her, but they're still pussies for rewriting it, even if they're both rednecks and the whole gay angle was meant as an insult.

John Byrne always intended Northstar to be gay, and hinted at it broadly in Alpha Flight, but got ixnayed by the editors. He pulled this a couple times in the books, first with Maggie Sawyer in Superman, then with Headhunter in Namor. Again he was stopped when the editors realised what he was doing, so other, later writers got the SJW brownie points for outing them, like Scott Lobdell with Northstar, which had to be the worst written pile of shit I have seen, even for the 90's.
It's funny, though, even though the only reason Northstar got his own series was because him outing himself made mainstream media, in the series that landed him, they could never bring themselves to actually say he was gay, or show him dating, or acting gay, or addressing the point at all. I remember the villains in the first issue, who were targeting him expressly for being an openly homosexual super-hero, said, "because he's, well, you know."

I'm not OP, there were no storytimes for a while because I've been busy but I might do one soon. I think it would be best to storytime something new instead of keeping the thread around a certain one or two comics only, so I'll go for the vola. Should be done uploading sometime today.
By the way, what's the current bump limit for /co/?

>There are people here who never read The Invisibles?
Was just thinking of checking this out, this might be the next storytime.

Thanks anon.
White Like She and The Badger (issues 1-4) have been uploaded to the vola, plus a link to download the remaining 66 Badger issues (which, compared to the first 4, are of debatable writing quality), that's 70 issues total.
I'm reading The Invisibles now, and it's a fucking blast. Didn't stumble upon anything gay yet but it's a great comic, I'm not sure if storytiming only one issue will do it justice, but I'll start with that. Here's…
The Invisibles (issue 1)
Written by Grant Morrison who did Sebastian-O, storytimed earlier in the thread. The art style is quite similar too.

The origin story for Lord Fanny contains most of the thematic gaiety, going into his background as the Brazilian Kwisatz Haderach, then a crossdressing child prostitute being forced to molest a captive Grey alien.
Although there is one notable moment when King Mob's cell is raiding Area 51 for the cure to AIDS, when Lord Fanny is using his Brazilian shamanic voodoo to help the team, so he's in the jeep masturbating to charge a sigil, and he says this line about trying to visualise the National Inquirer catching Bigfoot going down on him in a motel room.

There was a script for an Invisibles TV series, but they changed Dane to Scottish instead of Liverpudlian, which would be a pity, because then you couldn't have the Beatles ghosts on the pier or Jolly Roger calling him "Ringo".

Did I mention the Grey went on to direct pornographic films starring Lady Diana Spencer, Princess of Wales and a tentacle beast?
Grant Morrison was on fire.

With big name capes it's almost always virtue signaling, doesn't count.
Looks like the thread finally stopped bumping, the limit was 300 after all.

Eh, the initial batwoman run was alright. Not the greatest thing, a bit heavy heanded, the art was pretty though.

All comics center around gay characters except British comics like Desperate Dan and the Beano.
