OK KO had their Halloween special drop on the CN app today and it features some special guest stars:

Monster Party

>Enid is faced with a choice when her old friends from Ghoul School show up.

Do they just dump random forgotten cartoon characters in this show? I remember they did some crossover with Captain Planet for reasons.

 No.1026178

>>1026176

I think its just Ian has a fondness for some of the older properties in the Cartoon Network library. As for the Captain Planet crossover he mentioned that he used to watch the series a lot. The show even has a crossover special later this month featuring characters from Teen Titans Go, the Ben 10 reboot and Steven Universe which he says was heavily inspired by the old CN City bumpers.

>I don't watch OK KO since the character designs are fucking hideous to me.

Kinda the same for me, except all I ever saw was the pilot which just used the same animators as SU. Then I saw some pics from the Captain Planet shit and paid it no mind, but after watching this, this actually looks decent. I mean the animation is choppy as fuck but at least its not SU or AT-tier. And its humor seems cozy. But I have to wonder, is any of CN's tumblrisms in this show? Any annoying moral, political or social shit?

One of the episodes is about gun control, but that's the only one I know of because I don't watch the show much.

 No.1026220

>>1026218

I can live with that. That shit was way more prevalent in the 80s and 90s. Nowadays they'll just replace guns with lasers rather than outright call it out. So seeing something like that might actually be annoyingly nostalgic in a non-faggy way.

I think I would have preferred the entire episode been done in the style of Ed, Edd 'n Eddy, but the fact they showed an ability to at least make a few frames in the style of pic 2 and 3 makes me upset they didn't just do the whole episode like that.

Shit like this is why I'm glad I don't watch tv any more.

I saw it. It was just a parody episode man. A throwback to the 80s and 90s where anti-gun toons where as common as anti-drug, anti-smoking or anti-drinking episodes. This show's pilot looked like Steven Universe but it's far from being anything like that show.

Why is nu-Spongebob so obsessed with deformities and gross-out humor? I mean season 3 had a small bit of that but it was practically non-existent. Now its happening almost every episode.

>>1026617

This. The new season is only getting praise now because of all the throwbacks, nostalgiabait and "continuity" they're bringing up. Once they run out of season 1-3 material and memes to reference they're screwed. I can already picture an episode about Seaweed Monster Man being right around the corner.

 No.1026621

>>1026617

It's not just Spongebob that's in a nostalgia bait phase, Nickelodeon itself is trying especially hard to pander to their old fans, between the Rocko, Zim, and Rugrats movies, plus a show reboot for the latter, that kart racing game that looks to be mediocre at most, and that shitty mobile game called Super Brawl Universe that has old Nicktoon characters like Danny Phantom and Jenny, they've made it very obvious that even Spongebob can't keep them afloat forever.

>>1026619

Seasonal decay tends to do that to cartoons, Family Guy wasn't heavy on the gross out and shock humor when it started out either.

>Seasonal decay tends to do that to cartoons

The longer a show goes on, the more it starts to decay. Its artistic/writing entropy. You either play it safe with the same formula until it starts to decay, try new things and watch the whole damn thing unravel and become unrecognizable, or you actually do a good job but the whole thing naturally begins to crumble and fall to pieces as all things that physically age do. Simpsons, Spongebob, Family Guy, Sitcoms, Capeshit, etc. Best thing to do is to release in moderation so you can stave off the decay, like video games do or Hanna Barbera did in the 80s and 90s with triennial or so "special/movie" releases of old IPs to keep them relevant. But even then, there's just something about the current age of films, television, comics and animation where people prefer to be shitty from the start due to seeing it as a sort of subversion of expectations, as though such a thing is inherently good without realizing that such a tactic requires detailed care and consideration instead of just going in head first and trying to see how many reactions you'll get regardless if they're good or bad.

Okay, well let's define "Cal Arts Style" as best we can.

>Big, bulging eyes that usually slightly overlap each other

>Simple geometric shapes make up all the bodies

>Bean shaped heads, goofy teeth

>Lots of round edges

>Overall simplistic

>Made in the last 5 or so years

Adventure Time doesn't really count because it was more of a prototype to the style than anything, and it turned sour after a few seasons.

Gravity Falls definitely counts, and it's genuinely good. The last season, things became iffy but even the worse episodes are entertaining in some way. The only episode everyone unanimously dislikes is the road trip one, to the point that Hirsch doesn't like it.

Gumball certainly counts for it's "normal" character designs, but the show goes so fucking insane with it's style and art that it hardly counts.

Harvey Beaks was like a mix between Chowder's style and Cal-Arts, and it turned out to be a pretty fun show, for as long as it lasted.
