It's that wonderful autumnal time, where the weather cools, leaves fall, and everything becomes mildly spooky. What are some good animations to help capture the spirit of autumn?

 No.1020243

The Halloween Tree.

Well I'll probably be watching Over the Garden Wall again, as well as some Ruby Gloom and a few movies Sleepy Hollow and Nightmare Before Christmas. Thats my typical Halloween lineup while I hand out candy.

Coraline and Paranorman are pretty good spooky Halloween movies. Maybe Corpse Bride as well. Nightmare Before Christmas is a bit divisive on when it should be watched on Halloween or on Christmas.

Corpse Bride is one of my favorite movies.

Finally got around to watching Over the Garden Wall…

Although I'm a bit upset with (actual spoilers) it turning out to be actually set in modern times or at least 70s onward. I enjoyed the whole "turn of the century" aesthetic the rest of the show had going for it up until it shit the bed. For the most part, everything Wirt and Greg saw seemed normal to them as if it was set in their own time period. They didn't question anything as old or old fashioned. I'm just so disappointed. It was doing so well, it didn't need to have a backstory or exposition. It was all easily explained with them going "over the garden wall." And in a way having it revealed and not having their previous antics of how they got into that situation detracts from the experience. Every other character follows the theming and tone of the series, even the main characters until they brought in the modern setting. I'm just so let down. Everything else about it was great, but now I just can't care for it as a whole.

Did you get the twist fully though? It's not just some mysterious forest they enter. They're in purgatory. There's biblical references as well as references to Dante's Inferno in almost every episode. Then there's the fact the creator outright said it's about their journey through a near death experience.

>>1027351

Yes, I understood that, I liked a lot of the motifs it played around with or hinting at purgatory. How "The Beast" may have been a demon or Lucifer himself, I enjoyed a lot of the existential elements and themes. But I feel dropping it into a real world setting drastically undermines those tones. It was a huge distraction. I've often heard that souls in purgatory don't know that they're dead or how they died, that's the stressing part. And explicitly stating where they came from or how they got there ruined part of it for me. Same goes for them returning into the real world. The show would've been fine intact with all the moments in the Unknown. You could even cut them out. Starting with the boys wandering about the woods, not knowing how they got there. And ending with them running off back into the woods after their confrontation with the Beast. It honestly didn't need the clarification, the mystery and "unknowing" is what made it entertaining. I didn't need a satisfying conclusion of them returning home, it could've even been implied they returned or were going "home" i.e. leaving purgatory into heaven. I also dislike how the "Garden Wall" was made out to be a real place, when it could've been implied that the Garden was life and going over meant dying, or that the Garden is heaven and not yet being there, hence being "Over the Garden Wall." I also like how Autumn fit the tone of purgatory, being a halfway between Summer and Winter, Life and Death, Heaven and Hell. But including the real world made it nothing more than an aesthetic choice of backdrop. It didn't feel intended (hence why it wasn't revealed until towards the end) and feels like the product of corporate meddling in case it would've been "unsatisfying" or "too dark." There's just so much I find wrong with the twist. It made something I would've otherwise highly recommend into an average piece to leave behind but take a couple good moments from.

 No.1027360

>>1027358

That's fair. And yeah the original story was going to be much darker. Supposedly with Wirt and Greg actually dying. But can't exactly have that in a kids show. Despite that, they manage to slip in enough references and hints that tell you right away The Unknown is very much purgatory for the various dead trapped within. That's already a huge step up to the typical tones and themes of most cartoons in the west. I think that's part of why I liked it so much. It dared to be dark but not too dark to avoid a happy ending for the boys.

There's also comics that expand a little more on the lore of the story as well as have various little stories they didn't have time to include in the show. And supposedly a comic set right after the show with Beatrice somehow leaving The Unknown but that's not out yet.

 No.1027363

>>1027360

Another note, this is much more of a nitpick, but I find it interesting the implications of the Woodsman, the lantern, and his daughter. Since the Unknown is implied to be purgatory and the Beast an allegory for a demon or Satan, I wonder if his daughter is someone that was trapped in hell and the Woodsman made a bet to keep her out of Hell or bring her into purgatory by feeding souls too weak to pass through purgatory to Satan. The ending also weakened this a bit by showing she was never gone.

 No.1027364

>>1027363

The comics answer what happened to his daughter.

 No.1027367

>>1027364

I skimmed through the comics a bit before, yeah, that's something I also take trouble with. I didn't feel it was necessary to explain absolutely everything if it didn't add to the overall story or experience.

 No.1027370

>>1027367

Yeah but it's for the people that really do want answers. I don't think the comics really ruin the enjoyment of the original show that much though. They're purely optional bonus materials.

 No.1027371

>>1027370

By giving out solid answers though you weaken the thematics and implications it could have. Yes, it's supposed to be purgatory, but they're not going to outright say it and it would be dumb if they did. Same sense as they shouldn't outright state in the show his daughter is someone who either went to hell or can't pass through purgatory. And making her a physical person in this world ruins that. But if that was the case, maybe it was seen as too dark or sad that is daughter was trapped in hell, which may further support it if they felt the need to add it.

 No.1027372

>>1027371

Well with comics they're a lot more free to explore those ideas but they probably don't wanna be too heavyhanded with those ideas. Even if the fanbase for it isn't children, it's a series marketed to kids. So they probably don't wanna risk scaring children too much. Try to keep things as vague as they can while also giving answers to questions they couldn't give in the show. You have to remember something. All mysteries have an answer. It's just a matter of time before those answers are found or revealed in this case.
