dont care too much if this thread exists already. So /ck/ What are some of your favorite cooking/food shows and why? >heres one of mine.
I used to watch this show as a kid and alton pretty much got me into both science and cooking. Also his recipes are spot on and ive learned more technique then i have pretty much any other cooking.

Good eats is the best food show ever.
The only food related shows I watch nowadays are the ones with Andrew Zimmern and Anthony Bourdain on the travel channel.
Food Network is ass nowadays, it's nothing but Guy Fierri and competition shows.

Grew up watching Frugal Gourmet and Yan Can Cook. Martin Yan is just crazy.
Nowadays, Iron Chef (Japanese version) is relaxing entertainment, Jacques Pepin "Fast Food My Way" is good for ideas, some of the Ramsay stuff is OK (F word and his instructional programs - not all that worthwhile to watch him bitch out people on Hell's Kitchen Nightmares).
The Bourdain stuff is generally good, but I wouldn't call it "cooking shows" - they're travel shows where he happens to eat a variety of things. Except for TMOAC, of course, but that's not really a cooking show, either.
Justin Wilson stuff was always OK. Hard to follow because of the patois, but the food looked tasty. I always got the impression that his shows were about watching him cook being entertainment, rather than instructional… kinda like Emeril.
And, of course, the old Julia Child "The French Chef" is good foundational stuff. Yes, it's dated, and some of the stuff is weird, but it works. Also amusing to watch what I believe is the only "serious" cooking show ever to use an electric range instead of gas. Thanks for reminding me that heat management is possible, even with a lag.
As long as we're into it, I rather enjoy some of the nontraditional cooking shows, too - like Dutch Oven Cookin' with Cee Dub, Primal Grill, etc.

Cooking with Dog is pretty fun, but I don't think I've actually tried more than one or two recipes. I just watch it because it's cute.
The Galloping Gourmet is great.

i want to love foodwishes, the camera work is great, the recipes are solid, and Chef John goes into a great amount of detail concerning the nuts and bolts of why he's doing everything, but HOLY SHIT HIS VOICE AND VOCAL CADENCE ARE SO ANNOYING LIKE JESUS CHRIST IT'S LIKE HE'S TALKING TO A PLANT

I actually felt the exact same way about Chef John the first time I watched Food Wishes. Amazing cook, goes into great detail, but I found his jokes and general speech patterns really cheesy and annoying.
Eventually though I started to actually enjoy his sense of humour and vocal cadence. It grew on me, I guess.

Yeah, forgot about Cooking With Dog. Actually pretty useful instruction if you like to cook (or want to like to cook) but have very little in the way of kit. I mean, let's be honest - she roasts pork in the toaster. (In fairness, just like the sushi chefs at a few local restaurants here do.)
You really don't need to go to Bed Bath & Beyond and spend $2000 to make a bowl of noodles in the microwave, and it seems that she pretty well drills that point home. I think she does most of her demos on either a hotplate, or the butane version of a hotplate (about $25 at your local walmart; check the camping section). The biggest danger with watching CWD is that you'll want kitschy utensils, but it should be obvious that those are "nice to haves" not "must have or the food won't work".
You're welcome on the beans.
>>7115
You're right. There is no way you can suck my dick hard enough.
There's a hell of a lot of good stuff once you get outside the target demographic for Rachel Ray and Emeril.
I found the Cee Dub show on RFD (satellite network) about 10 years ago; came for the polka show, stayed through the freight train show, and then … this was interesting. Biggest problem with Cee Dub is he talks kinda slow.
If you like Primal Grill, you might ask around your local sporting goods (hunt/fish/camp) retailer to see if they have any upcoming cooking demos/classes. Even if it's hawking their proprietary seasoning blend of salt/pepper/sugar, it's probably still cool to see if you've got a spare 15 minutes.

Pretty OK idea, except for Bobby Flay, Anne Burrell, the contestants, and I'd like it better if I knew that the people they kick off win a tuition-paid enrollment in cooking class as a participation prize (since they don't get to complete boot camp and they clearly need it).

GOOD EATS BRING IT BACK LETS GET A PETITION GOING BUT NOT WITH FOOD NETWORK THEY ARE ASSHOLES WHO ALSO GOT RID OF UNWRAPPED
food network is ruined. now junk, full of shows like: "hurry up and cook this really fast! YOU ONLY GET MOLDY TOMATOES, A STRAW, AND SOME TOOTHPICKS! AW **** WHAT DID YOU COOK IN THE 5 seconds we gave you to build a masterpiece out of these HIGH QUALITY INGREDIENTS!?!?, WHAT IS THIS! ITS RAW YOU PATHETIC FOOLS! HOW UNACCEPTABLE! NOW STAND THERE AND ACCEPT OUR PRETENTIOUS SMUG DECONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM IN HOPE THAT WE WILL BE NICE ENOUGH TO GIVE YOU THE 5000 DOLLAR PRIZE EVEN THOUGH ALL THE DISHES WILL COMPLETELY SUCK BECAUSE OF THE HORRID CONDITIONS WE EXPECT YOU TO COMPETE IN!"
PISH POSH HUE ITS TOO SWEET
PISH POSH HUE ITS TOO SALTY
WAIT, WHAT IS THIS… IMPOSSIBLE…YOU ADDED ONIONS EVEN THOUGH YOU HAD NO IDEA THAT I DIDN'T LIKE THEM SO I WONT EVEN TRY TO BE UNBIASED AND GIVE YOUR DISH A FAIR RATING!
YOUR SLICED!!!
ALLEN QUIZ
SCREW YOU FOOD NETWORK!! AND SCREW ALL THE COOKING NETWORKS THAT BECOME CORRUPT MAINSTREAM REALITY T.V. STRESS SPONGES WITH NO FOCUS ON FOOD AND LOTS OF YELLING AND CONFLICT!
WHY DID YOU GET RID OF UNWRAPPED AND GOOD EATS
GOOD EATS + unwrapped = BEST FOOD NETWORK SHOWS EVER
WHY. WHY DID YOU TURN ALTON BROWN INTO A SUPER VILLAIN?!
I mean every single show has become "yelling with food" or "cooking in stereotypical countrygals kitchen with her family" there are over 3 different shows of each of these easily and the only good thing left to watch on t.v. is a guy who runs around eating tons of spicy heart attack food for competitions, gets sweaty and gives up half the time, a guy who goes around and eats the testicles of every single animal on earth everywhere so that I have no desire left to eat at home, and a guy who talks and talks and pretends he knows everything about nothing until someone looks at him strange for wearing boots in france while drinking absinthe.
what has food become on t.v.? I just turn off the t.v. now and cook at home. I enjoy the process of making my delicious food without some angry chef turns his face red yelling at me or some judge disapproving of me. sometimes I dream of going on chopped and telling the judges to tell them where they can shove it.
I hope you understand /ck/

Pretty much nailed it. Stopped watching Chopped because it was less "make the best dish possible dish using ingredients given to you" (Which being a poor fuck who makes stuff on the fly I find it a good exercise to not waste things) It was "Let's see who has the most tear jerker of a motive for participating"
"You know this lemon chicken teriyaki with cabbage is really tasty but why should I really give you $10,000? Did your dad die and you need it for a funeral?"
