Easy.

Self Flagellation is a strictly voluntary act of penance emulating Christ's scouring at the pillar, something Martin Luther also did on the regular as a monk. It was a sign of zeal and devotion to Christ. As you can see in this video it's Spanish tradition that during Lent people undergo public acts of penance and works of charity while donning white hoods, to earn no public praise or recognition for one's acts of public righteousness.

Martin Luther beat himself in fits of madness from the lack of security he felt in the Roman soteriological system. He engaged in self flagellation in desperation to earn himself salvation, and even though he was so extremely pious and zealous it did not work.

You have no idea how any of this works do you as you continue to assume that salvation is earned? A voluntary act of penance comes from a love of God and devotion out of fidelity to him. As per the council of Trent the election of the justified remains unconditional while faith and works plays into cooperating with the grace God gives you in order to enter heaven.

James 2:14

14 What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day, 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well,” but you do not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it? 17 So also faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

18 Indeed someone may say, “You have faith and I have works.” Demonstrate your faith to me without works, and I will demonstrate my faith to you from my works. 19 You believe that God is one. You do well. Even the demons believe that and tremble. 20 Do you want proof, you ignoramus, that faith without works is useless? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered his son Isaac upon the altar? 22 You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by the works. 23 Thus the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called “the friend of God.” 24 See how a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. 25 And in the same way, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she welcomed the messengers and sent them out by a different route? 26 For just as a body without a spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.

Saint James literally ridicules the notion directly that works play no part in one's salvation, as moral character and integrity are proof of faith.

That's what I understand about Luther's testimony. I'm not making the theological argument for sola fide, but I think Paul and James make it clearly in holy scripture.

>As per the council of Trent ..

>works plays into cooperating with the grace God gives you in order to enter heaven

Yep, that's heresy.

This is what happens when you depart from sola scriptura

So everyone in the early church were heretics because there was no scripture, they had oral tradition, which means we can't even rely on the biblical canon. That's immediately a self defeating argument.

The bible itself does not claim itself to be the sole source of authority as according to scripture itself.

John 21:25

There are also many other things that Jesus did, but if these were to be described individually, I do not think the whole world would contain the books that would be written.

2 Thessalonians 2:15

Therefore, brothers, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours.[a]

Acts 8:30-31

Philip ran up and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and said, “Do you understand what you are reading?” He replied, “How can I, unless someone instructs me?” So he invited Philip to get in and sit with him.

2 Peter 3:15-16

And consider the patience of our Lord as salvation, as our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, also wrote to you, speaking of these things as he does in all his letters. In them there are some things hard to understand that the ignorant and unstable distort to their own destruction, just as they do the other scriptures.
