To my (heretical, I freely admit to be honest and forthcoming) understanding, the holy Trinity is representative of the tripartite nature of the universe. Christ, being god made flesh, embodies salt, the grounding material aspect. The father is mercury, the will of divinity, which in lower expressions is the soul, or ego. The holy spirit is sulphur, spirit, the root essence of divinity which has no lower expression, the self-same symbol as the breath of life.

The persons aren't just titles put on vague concepts, they're distinct persons. We believe this because it's how the Bible talks about them.
The father is not the uncaused cause, that's the whole Trinity. Jesus is Logos, meaning he's the revelation of God in human form. Both of these are taken from John 1.
The spirit is a person who is part of the Trinity but fills different roles compared to the other two.
